Really? No one here was an Embassy mark? Jimmy Rave was the only heel in ROH who could get legit heat from ROH's ultrasmark audience.

Part of me thinks he should have been bigger, then the other part remembers how bad he was. He had the legacy, the look, a great physique, the million dollar title, and Maryse and couldn't do anything with it.

I would say there are no heels in wrestling today in general in the US that can generate the kind of heat that Rave had at that point.

Obviously Shelley has had great success in tag team, but feel like he was completely squandered as a singles competitor that could have been more both in TNA and ROH.

I keep trying to get it and keep falling short.
I've managed it with others, but never Jimbob. That's the closest thing to heat he gets from me; the intensifying frustration of trying to figure out why people remember him at all, let alone positively. I'd assume it's one big /wooo/wide rib were the posts not so sincere.

Put it this way: what makes him different from Matt Taven? Because from where I'm standing it's the same shtick, different decade.

Reckless Youth? IIRC, he the hottest indie talent in the late '90s to the point WWE signed him, didn't get it and had him sit on the bench until his contract expired only for him to work the indies for a few years then retire before the whole indy wrestling renaissance.

I still never understood the hype behind this guy. He just seemed very average.

I think it's weird how /wooo/ tends to shit all over Quackenbush who is incredibly creative and always put on good-great matches but then they like Reckless Youth who just seemed like a typical indie guy. Not shitting on the guy. He was good. I just never understood the hype, personally.

TNA might play into why I don't get it tbh.
Saw him first there. Manlet half of a cheesy jobber tag team. Real hard to take seriously after that, especially under the same name.
Then again the same went for Homicide & >>5739846 and they DID grow on me as appealing solo main eventers after I saw their older stuff. Would even call myself a Homicide mark now. Tried Homicide vs Rave last, still no dice.

OP/Rave mark. A big part of Jimmy Rave's cult status was his place on the roster - in a company full of flippy strong-style "pure athlete" gimmicks, an old-school "pompous high society" gimmick made for a nice contrast. Furthermore, Jimmy Rave was fond of cheating and eschewing impressive maneuvers, further drawing heat from the "muh pure wrestling" ROH crowd.

On top of that, Rave played the role well and had a perfect look IMO. The pouty sneer alone puts him above 80% of other wrestlers who did "rich guy" gimmicks.

>an old-school "pompous high society" gimmick
I don't associate this with Jimmy Rave at all. I wouldn't even attribute a gimmick to him. Maybe that's the disconnect. From all the matches I've seen he's just another guy in tights. Nana was the rich guy, he was just... I dunno, Nana's boytoy beneficiary.
>fond of cheating and eschewing impressive maneuvers
Anything particularly unique about the way he'd do it? Any especially smart or special examples? Because with all due respect he wasn't ROH's first heel. Daniels, Corino, even Xavier did all that too and did it better IMO.
>had a perfect look
I can agree with that. He looked like he didn't belong anywhere near a ring. Even Taven has definition... I think. Been a while since I watched his matches. Also do you have any pics or clips of the sneer? I can't remember it.

Sorry if any of this sounds confrontational or condescending, I'm genuinely after insight here.

So the Jimmy Rave-Sonjay Dutt match at NOVA Pro The Great Grapsy just ended. Jimmy looked much different than what he used to back in ROH and TNA. Anyways the match they had was okay though Rave moved slower and could have been better. However the weirdest thing of the match was the finish. It was hard to tell but I think Sonjay had disoriented Jimmy or something and the ref had to make a fast count to end the match. Sonjay looked really pissed off about that.

don't know whats going on with Jimmy these days but he's been pretty open about burning out of TNA & ROH due to drug problems.

It seemed like he turned his life around and actually became a drug counselor too. Then he came back for the SCUM angle in ROH but had a seizure backstage and let him go.

I think Rave is brilliant at psychology but he just may have done too much damage to his body

The pairing with Laycool was great though, they were such polar opposites the chemistry worked. Granted, the IC title match felt like a "Let's get this over with" booking decision, much like him winning NXT in the first place leading into possibly the worst beatdown in history. Where he really fucked himself over was moaning to bookers and leaving after just a few matches on the main roster, they told him they had nothing creatively and he fucked off. Had he waited a couple months the rise of Bryan and the like makes you think they'd have found him something real easily.

I miss the art of Kaval and Michelle McCool with Shoulder Layla. Also, holy shit, that pairing was comedy gold.

Damn shame he Low-Ki'd himself right out of the company, though.

It also didn't help that Low Ki has a reputation for being an asshole bridge burner and I don't think his spot in the company would have improved unless he had shed himself of that rep he built on the indies and TNA. I mean the pairing of him with Laycool was funny and creative actually did listen to the fans and changed their plans to have him win season 2. Who knows what it could have been for him had he stayed in WWE.

Chris Masters 2009-2012 comeback.

Don't know why they didn't do anything with this, he only ever wrestled on Superstars and house shows.

He was busted for roids years before but was still a big guy natural and was a better wrestler than he was, always got good reactions and had a simple, yet over finisher.

He was told by HHH that they'd do something new with him and then he was gone.

We'll never know for sure, but the consensus seems to be that the two suspensions fucked him over.

lol that RNG, Reks was part of that brief period of decent Superstars and Main Event matches, too.

Anyways, could Masters cut a good promo? I remember him just having random matches back then before he got released from WWE for good but I don't remember a single program with him where he cut a promo.

He was competent enough on the mic in 2005 doing the master lock challenges.

He's at least better than John Morrison, Del Rio or Jack Swagger were at the time.

Wasn't Low-Ki's big gripe with WWE when he quit was he wasn't immediately put into a main even storyline after winning NXT like Wade Barrett did? Low-Ki expecting to walk straight into the WWE Championship scene is an extremely Low-Ki thing to do.

Doubtful. Maybe in the south or smaller towns. A lot of Americans already live a Satanist lifestyle even if they don't call themselves that or identify as Satanists. He'd probably be a huge babyface in more secular/left cities like Chicago or LA.

Satanists don't wear goat masks or worship Lucifer or any of that crap. They don't believe in a literal Satan but use Satan as a symbol for opposing religious doctrine and living a humanist, self centered lifestyle.

Like >>5742697 says. Most people live that way anyway. Closest thing was that Sean O'Haire's 2003 gimmick.

I was kinda hoping that was what the KO "Face of America" gimmick would morph into. A parody of American excess. But that was hoping for too much.

RY is the definition of "Typical Indie Guy" in as much as he and a small handful of others Quack, and Daniels were the first to change the idea of indies being a collection of Post 80's WWF guys into this hybrid Japanese, lucha, technical....basically they were the first batch of wrestling nerds to start wrestling the US indies

No he shouldn't. No one should go to WWE...ever. Why do people still see someone with talent and actually WANT them in WWE? Haven't people learned their lesson yet?

He should be making WWE money, but he shouldn't be in WWE.
