I agree with you regarding WWE wrestlers. With a few exceptions they all just seem like your average video game obsessed man child who has spent more time in the gym than their neckbeard brethren.

Exactly.
It's a shame.

They are normal sized every day ex videogamers that used to watch Attitude era in the 90s, and are now the new breed of wrestling - namely WWE.

These guys are to wrestling what pop is to music.

It sucks.

No one has the 'tough guy' aura in WWE except for Samoa Joe (and obviously Brock Lesnar if we include part timers).

Yeah they all have nice abs and are athletic and all that, but none of them make you think 'oh shit I wouldn't want to mess with that guy'. None of them look like they've ever been in a real fight there entire lives, let alone won one.

Look at people Ishii though, and you can tell he's a tough bastard. I've seen him up close irl and even though he's pretty short you get that aura I'm talking about from him.

Yeah those type of guys are few and far between these days.

I don't know if it was the fans that started rejecting the big, tough guys or that the big, tough guys rejected wrestling. Either way, we're stuck with the Omega types now.

how do you mean "legit" backgrounds? do you mean like "Fuck You Im Billy Robinson Bitch" or like just former athletes, I couldn't give you actual names cuz I don't have the time but as much as you could say there were more "manly" guys in wrtestling it could be said that the nature of the business made men out of a lot of people. I mean no one is being traine by being stretched in some old dudes basement for 6 hours a day or running laps around Vernes farm in the middle of December followed by 1000 hindu squats you know what I mean but you do have guys who are just as legitimate athletes today, guys who wrestled in college, stuff like that. Also you hear a lot more of "I didn't grow up as a fan" from the guys in the 80s you know they all wanted to be football players or something

Regardless of whether or not OP is baiting, let me clear some things up.

I like indie wrestling. I like pure wrestling. I love PWG. I love CHIKARA. I don't necessarily NEED a storyline, although it really helps get me invested. I don't even watch WWE and their crap anymore.

But here's the thing. I don't think people understand that when people say “wrestling is dead”, that person likely started watching wrestling in a different generation. These people grew up on WWF and WCW. I always see this happen and then people are like “well just find another promotion”. The thing is that wrestling doesn't offer what WWF and WCW used to offer. I know this first hand. I started watching wrestling in 1996. I grew up on the Attitude Era. Thankfully, I managed to adapt and started to appreciate things like workrate and match quality even if there was no story behind it. It was an acquired taste though.

The thing people need to realize is that there isn't a single company out there anymore that does wild storylines like WWF used to. You ever notice how when you talk to casual fans they tell you about their favorite moments and not matches? Most other companies offer pure wrestling and the companies that do feature storylines are pretty basic. This isn't going to appeal to those fans. Lucha Underground is the closest thing to what WWF used to have in terms of crazy storylines. When's the last time you saw anything reminiscent of Undertaker sacrificing people on his cross or Austin and the beertruck or even post-Attitude Era stuff like Shane running the limo into the production truck? It just doesn't happen. In most companies it's as simple as “I will beat you to prove that I'm the best”. That's not going to hook those people. I think diehard wrestling fans get stuck in this bubble and think that what they want is what the majority wants. People want intriguing stories and characters. It seems that fans that started watching wrestling in the past decade seem to mostly/only care about match quality, which makes sense considering that's about the only thing that WWE can possibly offer these days. Fans that started watching wrestling in the 80s or 90s seem to prefer characters and storylines to match quality most of the time.

>but if you don't like wrestling, then why not watch something else?

Because they do like wrestling, it's just that match quality isn't the end all be all. They want to get hooked into the character and care about the character first and have a reason to care about whether he wins or loses. It doesn't make them any less of a fan. They just want something different from wrestling than you do. It makes all the sense in the world that they would say “wrestling is dead” because what wrestling was to them is dead. It's just like Cornette who grew up on territories and expects wrestling to be like those days. To him, wrestling is dead. I don't blame him for feeling the way he does. One day, you too might find yourself thinking wrestling is dead when it changes drastically in a way that you don't like.

A lot of fans from that time period talk highly of Hogan/Andre, Mega Powers Exploding, Heenan Family, etc.

Point being, it still had larger than life characters and storylines and wasn't just match match match with nothing to look forward to other than match quality.

if this were circlejerk I'd give you all my upvotes. I basically started watching in like 85/86, but I grew up in the southern US so I grew up with matches instead of moments and I was never fully invested in WWF's story over matches thing. even to this day, WWE was just never for me. UNFORTUNATELY the WWE "style" was really an anomaly in the business and so many things need to happen for a company to be able to recreate that era.

>All the greats have left

All the greats are either dead or close to it. They made the older days great for what it was at the time but ended up choking in life earlier than expected due to how much shit they put in their bodies to "Look Tough". I don't know, I rather have the wrestlers of today who will probably live life longer and put on something different than having short term guys coming in to get jacked enough to be something for 5 years and then die in 2.
