>Well, I just saw "Rascals", the TNG episode where Picard, Guinan, Ro Laren, and Keiko O'brien are turned into 12 year olds.

>And as I watched that scene where Keiko asks Miles if he could still "be her husband" even though she's stuck in a child's body, I thought to myself, "I bet someone wrote a god damn pedo fanfic."

>So I checked online. And I was right. What the fuck is wrong with you people?

>The fanfic is called Horny Rascals.

Keio really is a bitch. The only thing that would make this story worse is if they combined it with the DS9 episode where Molly gets lost in time and becomes basically retarded.

I'm thinking about writing it. But if I did I'd have to include the part from the dirty rascals where "Obrien takes off his starfleet uniform in a single motion" because how the fuck do you even do that?

>Retarded Molly yearned for her father's embrace.
>"HURRRRRŔRRRRR NGGGGGGG RAAAAAAAAAAA DURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR"
>"That's right Molly, you've been very bad" tiny Keiko quips, as she collects the drool from her much taller daughters lips to use as lubricant
>Molly grunts with vigor as Obrien appears in the doorway and suddenly removes his entire Starlet uniform in a single motion

You get the idea

I have always kind of wished they kept that as a thing. McCoy was always going on about Spock's green blood. Would have helped make them a bit more alien than just having traditional read blood.

However, I do admit it does look kind of silly. The only other argument I can think of is the fact that the Klingons are already established as having varying physiology. Some Klingons COULD have pink blood. Maybe?

Well that's just the thing, every other time we see Klingon blood it's red. With the Vulcans, there is a very well thought out explanation for why it's green, down to using copper instead of iron in hemoglobin. What's the element that binds oxygen in Klingon blood, peptobismolium?

>Some marine invertebrates have hemerythrin as a respiratory pigment. This pigment is colorless when deoxygenated and pink-violet in color when oxygenated.

Pink blood exists on earth, it's just not very common. I for one always liked the pink blood. When I saw Undiscovered Country in theaters, I was just a kid.. I thought it was kind of cool that the Klingons look so human on the outside, but on the inside their blood and guts were very different in even color.. it made them seem more real and more alien.. and I always liked the irony of a glorious warrior race having pinkish fuchsia blood.

I personally wouldn't complain if they just rolled with the pink blood from now on.

Blood with iron hemoglobin would be bright red when saturated with oxygen, and a blueish purple when depeleted of oxygen.

Blood with copper as hemoglobin would be green when saturated with oxygen, and, well, a bright, pinkish red when oxygen is depleted.

It's just chemistry.

I guess copper hemoglobin might be a more frequent occurrence in world with less iron and more copper in the crust? If copper is relatively rare there's going to be fewer sources to get it into one's diet after all.

If iron became hard to come by all alternatives to it would become more likely. I think it has more to do with a long list of pros and cons. Like consuming copper in the amounts recommended for iron can lead to toxic effects. So either whatever biochemical processes are negatively effected by copper would have to be changed if we needed more to sustain copper based blood oxygenation. Processes don't become negatively affected by copper magically. There's something gained from using that particular process that makes it worth the toxic effect. It's a giant optimization math problem where we don't have a good model.

Shit's probably weirder than we can imagine. Everything on earth uses the same basic amino acids to build proteins. I suspect that DNA isn't the only self replicating information carrying molecule out there. That opens up all kinds of stuff we probably won't know about until we run in to out there in the universe.

>>56897
I hadn't thought about that. I assumed hemoglobin was iron based because our crust has a shit tonne of iron but there's all this other stuff.

Though if Vulcans and humans can have babies then they probably would use our basic aminos and DNA surely?

However your post is interesting outside the context of star trek and totally worth waiting 9 days for.

Nurse Alyssa Ogawa - Wed, 02 Nov 2016 17:55:41 EST +5hgZe3l No.56900 Reply

Vulcans would have different metabolic processes, so copper might not be toxic to them at all. In the case of hybrids, it may be that one type of blood or another must predominate because of this, which is why Spock's blood is still green instead of purple or whatever.
We also know that all the races which descended from the 'The Chase' people have double-stranded DNA with the same base pair (and thus amino acids) as us, or else the episode makes no sense. Indeed, it would seem to be the case that most life is based on DNA and with the same amino acids in the Trek universe.
In real life, probably DNA is a pretty novel development, there may be as many different kinds of genetic storage media out there as there are worlds with life.

Yeah the fact that they're calling it DNA means there's a lot in common. RNA is very similar and still rates a new name. Interbreeding implies a lot more similarity. More similarity than really old aliens spraying DNA all over the universe implies. We'd have a lot more dogfuckers with human-dog hybrid babies walking around if being able to interbreed was as easy as sharing DNA from a billion years ago. Dogs and humans even share a common ancestor.

DNA definitely implies use of basic aminos. You can turn a DNA sequence in to a string of amino acids on paper. There's a certain code for terminating the string even. A unique string of amino acids implies a unique protein. So on paper you can go from DNA code to protein. Figuring out how those proteins behave and interact is way more complicated and the subject of a fuck ton of current research.

In one of Dawkin's books he says that DNA couldn't have been the first self replicating molecule. I forget his exact explanation. Basically it couldn't bootstrap itself. It relies on other stuff for replicating. It's like you know modern processors aren't the first computers because it took another computer to design a chip with >100 million transistors. It takes a cell to replicate DNA and produce proteins from it. It takes DNA to make current cells. Somewhere back in time this dependency chain has to break. Which implies something besides DNA is possible. More than one implies more than two is way more likely than exactly 2.

If you find this interesting enough to read about it check out Dawkin's books, at least the ones not focusing on religion. Before he got on the religion soap box he was a researcher in statistical genetics and does a good job at explaining the research in a way that someone with a high school level understanding of biology can understand without dumbing it down. His audio books were available in a torrent on the pirate bay last time I checked.

Yeah I forgot about that. They actually covered that DNA was put there.

>>56906
I think life also started quite a few times without DNA and died out before it started without DNA and then developed DNA. I think the aliens putting DNA there implies they probably did more than just let processes run wild, they guided it to ensure quite a few in form and capabilities. Also interbreeding still required medical intervention.

Back in the real world you make a good point. However we know DNA isn't the first self replicating molecule, not just of this run of life, but several runs before which failed but did exist before life finally took long enough to get complicated.

Someone actually made me read the god delusion. The first half is the same point 5 times over. The second half he gets off track and actually it's pretty good. Stuff like universal inbuilt morality and shit. But yeah I mean most people can't even hold in their head that he defined the concept of "meme" and what it means so most don't realise he's also a very credible biologist.

Newsflash: Nana Visitor has rockin' tits.

Seriously, though, she is a strikingly beautiful woman. I met her at the last Trek convention in London, she looks different, but more... MILFy.

Yeah she was on Torchwood: Miracle Day too. While she looked nowhere near like she was on DS9, and was still pretty hot. Total MILF, hard to believe that her and Alexander Siddig got married just as DS9 was ending then divorced only 4 years after.

Hard to believe that for a brief moment we get to see Kira have little banter moment with Q while getting blown up by Newman.

it's definitely some kind of leftover idea from TOS, it's so goddamn retarded that they discover the secret to eternal youth and never really investigate it. Also there was some drama with the chick who played Ro and they almost had her stay a kid. That would have been weird amirite?

Just finished watching Rascals, the science behind this episode is really silly however it's a fun episode to watch - 7/10. They should have kept Guinan as a kid, it would have been good to see the crew take advice from an old wise kid in future episodes.

Idk I thought the kid for Cakehole was just a pretty bad actor all around. I mean, she was a kid, so I can't blame her per se.
The kid who they got for Guinan was truly amazing and it's a shame she didn't go on to appear in front of the screen. But apparently that wasn't the Trek casting guy either -- she played the young version of Whoopie in the movie 'Sister Act' released that same year. Since learning that I think probably the whole episode started when Goldberg was like 'omg I can't believe how much this kid I did this movie with looks like me! TNG writers, we have to do a kids episode.'

MAKE THE GREAT LINK GOOEY AGAIN

You know that shitty episode where a second Defiant gets sent back in time or some retarded shit? Literally awful episode in my opinion.. save for the part where they made a math tutoring program starring Quark all about economics. Anyway it was on my local TV station and goddamn Odos got like this fake spray on tan going on and some newly golden ass locks. He seriously looks like a babby changeling trying to morph into Grand Nagus Trump.
