Rewatched Paradise recently, this hypocritical bitch is the worst. She's willing to let people die, falsely imprison them, etc all to keep her low tech dystopia going, which would never have started without technology she helped develop. The Star Trek equivalent of a militant vegan who eats GMO soy

I don't quite get why to "hate" characters written to portrait a hypocritical villain.

The most hated characters in the franchise are Wesley Crusher and (on this board at least) worthless whiny bitch Dax. Both are not because how the character is portrayed but because of the stories focusing on these characters are poorly written. Futhermore both characters are shoehorned into places where they do not really fit.

OT: Also what's wrong with GMO?

But, you're supposed to 'hate' a villain, so the fact that you hate a villain is proof that they are well written. OP is really asking 'what the most well written antagonist' but that doesn't sound as snappy.

>> Also what's wrong with GMO?
What's wrong is the hypocrisy, not the veganism nor the GMO eating.

This. There's a difference between an effective villain and an annoying one, and Alixus is definitely in the latter category. Maybe it's just that I live in a rich leftist area where hypocritical shrill cunts like her are commonplace, but she really makes that episode hard to sit through

Kai Winn definitely was the one character I loved to hate the most. (In case this is actually the topic ITT)
Her greed for power and arguing really did portrait how this attitude can thwart even "best intentioned" plots. It's kind of sad that she didn't get the chance to evolve into the big bad in later seasons.

Another one of that caliber was DaiMon Bok.
The antics and plots definitely makes him fun to root against.
TNG's "The Battle" is definitely in my personal Top 10. Kind of sad that the decision make the Ferengi into a comic relief race -- Bok could have been so much more if this wouldn't have been the case.

There's no vegan opposition to GMOs. You can be vegan and believe that genetically modified plants are safe to eat and perhaps on the weight of scientific evidence argue that they're potentially better for the environment if they can lower the need for fertilizers and pesticides.

Anyway I hate Riker. He's just such a smug prick. Fuck him.

I think the best villains are ones you mostly hate but can understand. Wynn is great at that because she is a consistent character. All she has ever believed in is herself and the religious organisation but not really the prophets. Her ambition was not to further the prophet's aims but to be their highest servant and she felt she deserved it because she'd done the work and put in the prayer time. Grinding it, going through the motions. What I do like is that she isn't 100% though, she occasionally has a twinge of conscience and when the Pah Wraiths reject her she finally realises that it was always about her being shit.

Except when they go too far I like Dukat. Not just for his boss-ness but that he again had a consistent set of flaws. His mirror was Kira, she was a protagonist a lot of people didn't like but over the series she grows. Her actions as a terrorist were grim and she knows they weren't good acts, she wouldn't change them but hopes no one has to do that again and wants to take a different path whenever she has that option. Dukat however never admits such things, everything he does is glorious and perfect and that's why he never learns. He never even says "I did the least awful thing" and that's what makes him a villain. He refuses to admit anything he did was bad in any way.

DS9 had the best villains largerly but Voyager had Seska though. She reminded me of being in an abusive relationship, the way she manipulates everyone. She was a thoroughly well written piece of shit. She's the only character I hate because it reminds me of some bad times but at the same time that shows how well written she was how real. It underscored how awful Chipotle was though, those people work on the most wretched and vulnerable (and they only last very long if your "support network" is either nonexistent or made up of either people like you who don't know beter or people like her who won't tip their hand, or a mix of all three), that he was a mark is consistent with that idiot in general and he was totally unfit to be first officer. Janeway changed every episode but he was just consistently useless and when he needed to stand up to her he didn't. 2Vac would have made a much better foil for Janeway but I guess that wouldn't bridge the diplomatic gap and so this loser ended up being second in command.

Anyway I hate Seska because she reminds of an ex. Whoever wrote her I feel for because I know the shit he's been through.

Yes, I loved how Dukat's was written, and his consistent rationalizations for what he did. It makes it really easy to see where he was coming from and even sympathize with him a little.

One of the best episodes with him and Kira was Return to Grace, where she takes it upon herself to mentor Dukat's daughter.

Most people think this, and it's because their idea of batshit insane is actually relatively normal, so much that billion dollar companies can craft million dollar information chutes for each one.

If you are one of us in the more legitimately bat shit insane category, google won't push you ads to coddle your worldview. It will push pills on you if it comes to think you're actually insane, or if what you're just asking is so unique and far out there that there isn't enough data, its sad little algorithmic mind will collapse right into the uncanny valley, giving you nonsense and pushing you back towards one of the info lanes it has a better handle on.

On that note of information mind control, this has to be one of my favorite characters to love to hate.

The accuracy isn't the scary part, it's what they use it for. Google knows a lot of people better than any human does, but it uses that to push shitty t-shirts made by algorithms in order to make the sad human feel seen -- but in actuality only by machines. It could use that knowledge to fundamentally remake the world, for better or worse, too, but all this power exists for a walled garden whose only legal responsibility is to return a profit to shareholders. "Don't be evil" forgetting the subconscious can't process negatives...

That's even worse than the borg, man, at least they want to raise quality of life for everyone equally, and they tell you they're assimilating you up front.

I've been thinking this for a few days...is /1701/ the de facto futurism board now? The world just isn't ready for this yet. And I absolutely despise ads so fuck all that big data tracking because it goes WAY beyond just targeted ads. It's also good we live in a country that doesn't have an over zealous cyber crime division. People in some countries are getting jailed or fined thousands of dollars for shit posting on the internet or worse just saying wrong think. All made possible by the sorting of that data by google and its splinters. This isn't the holodeck where we can save our spaghetti waifus and trust no one will open the file.

He's not a diplomat or an explorer. He's a guy you want when those aren't options which will achieve anything. You want him to actually persuade someone of something he'll fuck it up. You want him to do science, crew won't be focused. You want to defeat that Romulan warbird that's sneaking up on you, he won't let it blow your shields down and hail it until a small cruiser destroys an enormous dreadnought class ship, no. That bitch is going to decloak in little pieces with all hands already lost. Jellico will tell the shift that did it that they did almost good enough in pulling off the unprecedented but do better next time and then send the Romulan embassy a missive entitled "Don't u sneak up on me again" with a scan of the wreckage with his ballsack edited in subtly.

I know RIP Bioware but he's basically Renegade to Picard's Paragon. He just doesn't quite have the charisma to deliver a line like "how about goodbye".

Yeah but evolving into energy seems to be able to happen at any time. Remember that dude Crusher helped, his race was evolving straight from solid to energy with no liquid phase in between. Evolving into energy seems to be something that can happen to any kind of species given the right conditions, and fairly often too.

Also, if you follow the fanon where the founders are the species from 'The Chase,' then it would make sense that they seeded the galaxy with shapeshifting as well as solid life. It also makes sense that their children would become more advanced than them; the founders seem to be a textbook example of a civilization in arrested development. They are thousands of years older than all the alpha quadrant civs, but are barely more advanced than them technologically, and haven't evolved politically for thousands of years either. Their xenophobic paranoia keeps them from evolving both metaphorically and perhaps literally (since they are after all masters of genomes, including presumably their own, and if they see themselves as perfect they would prevent any mutation that might threaten that.)

that doesn't make any sense to me, the species from "The Chase" seeded the galaxy with life because they were alone, the Founders formed their empire because when they were a young race they were hunted down by solid humanoids, it's one of their main motivations to be who they be

They may have forgotten who they are but it's all a bit incongruous. I think that fanon mostly comes from people who just temporarily forget that odo's weird face is not a racial feature but a unique quirk of his inexperience with shapeshifting and lack of tutelage that the female changeling copied to make him feel less alone manipulate him er probably both.

Spacefaring life has been around tens of millions of years. For them to emerge relatively recently would mean that they devolved for a long period of time. They would be related to them the same way that we're basically Tarsiers (if they had their extended dark age just before the dawn of spacefaring life) or maybe ammonites (somewhere in the middle) or perhaps that early puddle of goo that Q took Picard to (if the chase aliens recording was the work of a civilisation already in decline due to galactic boredom and ennui).

No intentions or feelings can survive billions of years. And obviously the implication wouldn't be that the Chase race is exactly 1-to-1 the founders, just that they are one of their descendants. There could have been another race of happy go lucky changelings who got their puddles splashed in by the more aggressive founders in their primordial prehistory, or any number of other possibilities.
>>67212
I think that fanon mostly comes from people who just temporarily forget that odo's weird face is not a racial feature
Let's be real, 100% the only reason it's a thing at all is because the the chase alien and the female founder are the same actress.
>>They would be related to them the same way that we're basically Tarsiers
But of course they would have to be. If they're equally related to mammalian species, reptilian species, green blooded species and whatever the fuck klingons evolved from, then their relation must be on a fundamental level going back to the origin of life, not anything recent at all.

I hated Odo when he started "linking".

And I also hate how easily he is redeemed. If the Sisko didnt cast his space magic to make the Dominion fleet dissapear the alpha quadrant would be fucked because Odo turned into a bitch after losing his changeling virginity.

That whole character arc made me feel uneasy. Now that you mention it, he was redeemed too quickly. I don't dislike the fact that linking changed him so much, but I feel like the show missed an opportunity by not showing a greater degree of change in the rest of the changelings. Given their linking nature, and how they spend a great amount of their time linked,- I can't help but feel like their biggest weakness culturally/morally is a lack of differing perspectives. In that way, Odo was perfect, being a starfleet officer accepted among solid beings who had never linked before. Linking with such a person should have had a profound effect on them, even if he was only a single person connecting with millions. I haven't actually watched that part of DS9 in a while though. Maybe it did impact them more than I remember.

The changelings are annoying in general. They have a massive victim complex and treat other species like shit because a "solid" hurt their feelings. Classic example of the tortured becomes the torturer.

And it's not as if they have some redeemable moments, they're always antagonistic or outright evil. Pretty much every other "evil" species in Trek has shown that they have at least the potential to play nice.

Dukat is ruined the second that Ziyal dies, they assassinated his character with her and ignored the fact that he had 7 other children. There's still good scenes with Dukat in them but that's only because Marc Alaimo is a great actor. The writers basically just shit on him from there on.

I seriously doubt this, Dukat was actually a space hitler. sure, the writers could have done a better job with his descent into insanity, but the guy who ran a military occupation of an entire planet where millions were dying in labor camps was definitely always evil. Dukat running a resistance movement against the government he helped create and working with the people who deposed and imprisoned him would have been totally out of character

If you actually crunch the numbers given to you, it makes it pretty obvious that the Cardassian occupation wasn't as bad as bajorans claim. In 50 years, they only killed 15 million people on the entire planet... Bajor is supposed to have about 4 billion people on it. Statistically speaking most Bajorans wouldn't even know someone who was killed in the occupation, since that's about 300,000 people per year, which equates to .000065% of the population. On the entire planet, only about 800 bajorans were killed in a given day on average. To put this in perspective, about 150,000 people die per day on Earth at present. Adding 800 to that would not have a huge impact. And, I for one feel that is not enough, bajorans are terrible. The cardassians didnt need to waste their resources on building schools and infastructure for the Bajorans, but they did, and no one remembers that but everyone remembers 'muh 15 million'

It's just that there are legit arguments behind the scenes to ignore race traitor ducat. Wasn't there a writers strike at the time? The megalomania is spot on for late stage ducat granted yet it was handled poorly. Besides I find it hard to believe the cardasians stole some orbs and didn't accidentally get an experience or at least find some supporting evidence of worm hole aliens. And given that Crisco is the Jesus of bajor it makes sense for ducat to take the anti Christ position for a final battle. To some extent that makes sense for him to infiltrate the bajoran race and corrupt the Kai... More than she already was. But at least he wanted to exterminate the broke noses and said as much when he left Crisco on that planet with a broken arm and serious concussion. So if any thing s7 ducat did a little wrong while before hand doing nothing wrong. As I said his only mistake was not killing to death more bajorans.

The owner of this dog keeps him locked in a small room, indoors all day. He is never ever allowed outside. He shits on the carpet. They feed him cheese. He is known to be very stinky. If he ever gets walked, it's not by his owner but someone else. This dog isn't having a great life but he does have an owner. And so does the hypothetical crackheads three legged dog. Who is to say that you would truly be a better owner? Maybe that crackhead really cares about his three legged dog. Maybe that dog is all he really cares about. But you motherfucker, you think you can just take this dog from its owner and somehow you're doing it a favor? Not only that but youre a literal time traveling space alien nazi if you do otherwise? They didn't cure toxoplasmosis in the future? Knowing Janeway's tendency to avoid medicals even as her skin falls off she probably sustained a serious head injury early on then with her new personality refused to get it fixed before her brain permanently changed and actually isn't the same person who left DS9 in that crossover episode. Janeway is concussion and brain cell death now.

I dunno about Porthos. I think if the best of man is supposed to go represent us in space then we should definitely take a dog or two. Cats are half domesticated shits (which is half the charm they hold for "cat people"). During the first couple of seasons Archer is naive and barely even wants weapons and Porthos out acts a lot of the cast (and has more charisma than everyone bar Phlox). Later on it's established that he has more survival instinct than everyone else. This is probably because as we know starfleet has always been a way of getting the most reckless crazies must be at least a 6 on a scale of 0 to "Optimus Prime" who even does a needless suicide run in the animated transformers film with awesome wells off earth. Porthos isn't someone with a deathwish, just a dog though. So he survives things that would kill other crew members by virtue of lacking the suicide genes.
