Anybody still playing this? My girlfriend and I are playing but need more people to do the PvE missions. We're on Xbox One btw.

I poked at this a thousand years ago when it went F2P. I've been sitting out this WoW expansion, I should give this a shot.

I've thought about playing it recently. I gave it a try but couldn't get into it. I really hated the way they did the away missions. Maybe it was just in the low levels or something. The ship part was really cool though.

Played a lot on PC a year or 2 ago.
Played all the way through with a Starfleet, Klingon, and Romulan character.
Klingon was the most fun because one of the free ships is a carrier.

Got kinda bored and quit after running out of single player content though. Would probably play it again on PS4 if I didn't have a backlog of games I actually payed for.

Naw, unfortunately that's just part of the paradigm of the game. Every mission all the way to lvl 60 features almost exactly equal amounts of away team and ship based sections. The justification being that because there's unified experience points but two experience tracks (one for ground and one for space) it would be kinda weird if you were in space all the time but could use that to make yourself better on the ground/vice versa.

The end result though is that playing the game is entirely about suffering through the awful ground sections to get to the blissful space sections. The consolation prize is that the end game is really only about the space combat, and it is incredibly deep and involved and if you try to play PvP, you will lose.

Oh also you can make your own missions cause it's a cryptic game (probably on PC only, don't know what the game is like on those other 'things' people play games on) and most of the user ones are built out of the awareness that everyone loves the space and hates the ground.

Because you are either up against premium ships or fleet ships. Have fun grinding that on your own unless you are lucky enough to get into a populated fleet.

I don't care that it's pay-to-win since PWI bought it (I just wanna RP anyway.) It's a fucking star trek MMO that has lasted longer than pretty much any other WoW pretender out there, that has done some pretty awesome stuff with the lore and even featured a lot of actors from the shows for voices. It honestly has no business being as good at is, all the faults included. Whatever they have to do to keep the lights on over there I'm all for.

I liked doing the user missions after I completed the story. I dropped it after finally trying to get into the crafting meta and decided that was my end game ignoring fleet and premium. It had every thing right but the game play was only half good, space combat was awesome and I loved user mission that tried to make you play through a boarding action on either yours or another ship. But even that was never really good when presented as a random assortment of hallways and over sized rooms.

Also the premium ships is what really nailed the coffin for me.

I wouldn't mind dropping 5 or maybe even 10 bucks to get one my favorite ships in the franchise, but many are locked behind lootcrates which require keys you have to buy, it's really annoying.

Even worse are the ones which require premium currency which you can only find in said lootcrates.

This silly game would make so much bank if the premium ships were more affordable. I mean seriously, it costs like 20 bucks for a single one. Most people grind for it with multiple characters a.k.a. exploiting the f2p aspect of the game, I just don't get it.

Actually, the game does quite well financially from what we can see from the outside. The thing is the general gaming public doesn't understand how f2p really works. I don't know STO's specific statistics but as a general rule of thumb, 80% of your profits will come from 20% of the paying players (which is itself at most 20% of the player population.) The 'whales' who have to have every ship just don't care about the money. They probably calculated based on their player base (which is still number 20 on mmo-population, more than DFO or archeage which is kinda crazy to me...) that, based on the number of players who actually ever buy anything at all (10-20%) they needed to charge that much to their whales operate. Essentially if you lower the price to $10 it's not going to increase your sales by 200% which it would have to to break even, but the people you are selling to will buy it for 20,40,60, whatever (like what you have to pay if you get the three-ship packs for all divisions) so clearly one way is sustainable and one is not. It sucks, but that's F2P economics for ya. If the player base was 3x as large, you might see prices drop maybe 1/3, but that's not gonna happen either.

I'm getting pretty far now. Level 51 Klingon about to head into the Delta Quadrant campaign. I really like the fan service in some of the episodes you get to play. Sadly, doesn't look like I'll be getting anymore free ship tokens now, so If I want a Tier 6 ship, looks like they expect me to pay REAL money or horde a shit load of dylithium.

You can do all the missions with a t5 though. You might want to replay some missions to get more weapons/consoles in order to specialize.

I'm honestly sad I've sorta dropped STO, but the blatant pay to convenience finally crossed into pay to win. That, and I VERY mad with how the Iconian arc, being built up since the beginning, ended so...flat. And Discovery is cancer, and so don't really look forward to it being shoved in. Fuck it, fuck it all.

Well, at least the Iconian rep uniforms are fucking hot. May as well be latex slut suits, which is perfectly fine. The last time I was on was Christmas, for the yearly event. Should I bother trying to jump in again?

Yeah, the Klingon campaign seems the most fun and I am also enjoying the Romulan one. The TOS campaign should have been longer.bI can't be fucked to do the discovery or Dominion ones.

The thing that puts me off, aside from the buggy missions, is the limited inventory/bank slots. I'm too broke to drop money on this. Luckily my fav ship (intrepid class) was free.

This game is disappointing. It's very stale and basic but with a Star Trek skin. I can't get into it.

I gave it serious consideration then saw that it had silly fanfaction levels of writing.

>Uh... The Iconians.. are back!
>And they need a magic "World Heart? Thing"
>THEN THEY DISAPPEAR! OR SOMETHING!

It's confusing. And I say this as a person who has bitched about not having any post Nemesis content.

The writing as a whole was kind of dumb, but with essentially the whole game building up the Iconian arc, I was invested into the story. How they fucked everything up at the last legs just ruined it all for me.

And then they started dabbling in Mirror universe content, and time travel, something the STO writers NEVER were able to do right! Nothing was even consistent, let alone made any sense with the post-DS9 situation of the MU. I mean O'Brien's son twirling his villainous mustache as he killed dad? The Terran Empire magically back and bigger than ever, and even more cartoonishly evil? Fucking Leeta as the Pah Wraith's harbinger? Who the fuck wrote this shit?! Then ruining the mysteries of ENT and the Temporal Cold War? And now trying to shovel the absolute shit that is Discovery in? No thank you.

At least Mirror Leeta in Imperial hotpants and crop top was pretty hot.
