What would be the political ideology in the federation?

Depends on the timeframe. TOS era would be a great balance between everyone's needs being met but the freedom to fuck off and do your own thing as needed. By the end of TNG a mixture of the realities of trying to run what is more or less the Alpha Quadrant's largest power and just the general way societies tend to restrict freedom over time in response to specific events/tragedies it'd be de facto fairly restricted if you didn't want Starfleet, scientific inquiry or a life of nothing much. **The Culture is a much better utopian future.**

Across the federation 8,000 light years. It would take more than a life time to travel at normal speed warp, political ideology would be different in specks.

Seems to be a guy who tried every possible way to politically dunk on trek.
To the premise: The feds are definitely commies, that doesn't mean they're marxist tho.

What I found most hilarious:
>Spartan lifestyles: Even on the mixed civilian/military spaceport DS9, no one seems to have anything but a handful of room decorations and sentimental momentoes. Quarters are quite clean and barren even when children live there (and anyone with small children knows how silly that is). This could arguably be described as a lifestyle "choice" rather than the result of government edict, but it is also quite consistent with the growing list of evidence that the Federation is communist.
Ahahaha, that's the modern equivalent of saying you're having a spartan access to information because your desktop isn't cluttered with icons.

why would I read an essay about star trek on a star wars website that's just dumb

yeah that quarters thing is reading a lot into not putting a lot of shit on your walls when you're moving around a lot in a society where you can literally push a button, get anything made on the spot, and then return it to the nothing from whence it came

Until they ruined the Ferengi in the last few seasons sure. They went from being a unique alien culture with their own traits to 'not being like Humans/the Federation bad' and having an enforced reform under Rom.

The idea that it's a positive arc for the Ferengi to lose their distinctive culture and beliefs and become humans with big ears is in direct opposition to the earlier Trek ideal of embracing and respecting the differences between species.

I'd say the fed is just a hyper smug version of the 'European dream', they constantly pat themselves on the back and feel all smug about how they have ended human suffering and everyone has ultimate autonomy to perfect themselves and find meaning and all that jazz, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

Like, we see in DS9 and TNG that the federation is pretty grim, colonists treated like shit, poverty and rape gangs, every admiral is evil, bureaucrats are all incompetent, and important legal precedent is set by Goddamn military tribunals.

Every time Picard or co starts rambling on about the economics of the future and all that, it's almost like they are trying to convince themselves everything is fine and they live in a utopia.

However, the utopianism in TOS is a lot less hamfisted, and so much more believable.

That's what I'm saying. Gene doesn't care about exotic cultures because they often will have social norms/taboos that would get in the way of outsiders sticking their weird shaped meat tubes into the holes of the locals. The Federation quietly destroys the old values system and replaces it with one where everybody is fucking everybody. And that is the core of Gene's dream, no more social boundaries to stop him from sticking his weird looking dick in weird looking holes.
