Don’t worry. Most of the threads here are pretty chill.

Why do you hate Jake so much?

As child characters and actors go early Jake is deeply tolerable. Later Jake is actually pretty good. In both cases he suffers from having a lot of Sisko-heavy episodes because Brooks struggles to do non-angry scenes.

Yeah, Jake is well done, especially when you compare him to Wunderkind Wesley. DS9 really brought the good stuff with Jake and Nog.

Nog > Jake

it was going to put in the op but im retarded the main reason i hate jake sisko is the episode ...Nor the Battle to the Strong under direct fire from an enemy the (then unknown at the time) genetically engineered doctor who has killed many many viruses across the galaxy falls over from an explosion and jake in a moment of panic doesnt think to go pick the doctor up he just runs and hides and its breaks him up that he was so weak and the resolution was
>we you feel bad about it so its okay jake :)
it was the most bullshit fake lovey shit and it tainted my view of the character where i cant stand him

Jake Sisko is a good character, written and acted well. Hopefully he makes a cameo at the end of Discovery, looking at his PADD and shaking his head disappointedly before saying, "Nah, that's no good. Computer- delete story."
Lt. JG Saavik - Tue, 18 Feb 2020 12:57:13 EST BnrdIjvE No.69681 Reply
I didn't like a lot of that but the resolution was that the second time his courage is tested he does exactly what's needed. The idea being that the line between a coward and a hero is finer than one might think.

However yeah just fleeing from super doctor was bullshit. He didn't even check that star fleet graduate who can definitely fight well, oath or no, was okay, as that would have given him a much better chance of survival if he was.

Most humans panic under fire if they're not used to it. They do not act rationally. Even the ones trained to handle being under fire tend to just hide and shoot vaguely in the direction of the enemy: this is why the military doesn't consider it necessary to give the average infantryman a gun with any real degree of accuracy. The thing that splits apart the ones who end up in ever more elite units is keeping their head under fire and wanting to kill the other man rather than simply survive.

Jake was barely out of childhood in the grand scheme of things and given that he's a Federation citizen probably has extended immaturity and a pretty indulgent upbringing. Unless you're just complaining about the resolution.

Go look up the minimum MoA the US military considers acceptable for standard issue small arms (and standard issue ammo). It's surprisingly poor compared to what civilians would expect out of even a moderately priced AR-15.

It's actually those nations that see combat the least that tend to be the ones that overspend on small arms while active nations tend to put their money almost anywhere else: unless you're behind on some major change in tech (we've not really had one for ~50 years, not counting incremental improvements to optics) or local political pressure due to bitching troops forces you to upgrade small arms just don't matter that much. This is similar to the fact that it's mostly logistics and harder to quantify things like 'experience' that wins wars but things like tanks get focussed on because they're much more visible.

Not like the USSR/Schooln Federation were/are different in that regard, if anything their standard issue rifle is even less accurate. You also get cases like the UK which is still limping along with a fixed up version of what was originally a terrible rifle that's now still somewhat sub-par I believe finally getting something new in a few years while happily throwing money at other problems. In a conventional conflict standard infantrymen don't do the killing, in a non-conventional conflict the balance shifts a bit more towards a-man-with-a-gun but that really depends on the situation you're in and how willing you are to just drop bombs on the problem anyway. Even in straight up firefights, depending to some degree on national doctrine, the rifleman mostly supports the LMGor SAW, or Automatic RIfleman etc rather than doing the killing.

I'm no expert but apparently in the COIN situations the US has found itself in in the Middle East this policy has backfired a bit so you do see designated marksmen (think rifleman with a much more accurate gun, not a sniper) showing up originally somewhat informally and now more with specifically designed equipment (falling back to 7.62 over 5.56) and training but that's a result of one environment where you do require long range accuracy, the other side is mostly incompetent at actually killing you and you can't just have the chair force blown up everything around them. The UK also slid towards this for much the same reason.

>I live under the rule of an african warlord who thinks the knob to adjust the sights make the gun shoot harder
I'm not Liberian.

TNG/Early DS9 Gowron > Late DS9 Gowron. Granted there were hints he was playing the political game towards the end of TNG as well. In any case I prefer the way his character was portrayed originally.

I liked S1 Odo and Rom way better than later seasons. They turned Odo from a hard detective to an emotionally stunted pimp and Rom from possibly decent businessman, though a failure working for family to just a retard working for family.

Not to mention the way he became Nagus along with the complete fucking of the Ferengi culture. Even if you don't mind the change it's utterly unrealistic for their entire culture and legal system to overhaul itself so radically almost overnight without any visible unrest. It's like a Hollywood movie ending.

man don't even get me started on the Farengi thing. Federation preaches respect of other cultures yet constantly shame Quark the entire run just for being a pillar of Farengi civilization.

They had massive civil unrest when Zek introduced suffrage, he was briefly thrown out as Nagus over it.
Sometimes I think they specifically picked Rom to act as fall-guy

I agree with many points made here. He's a decent character despite the awkwardness of the kid actor from time to time.
Jake is essential to developing Sisko and I found their relationship enjoyable. Sisko is a family man, his dedication to Jake, his trauma over his wife and relationship with the milk chocolate smuggler lady always clashed with his role as a Starfleet officer.
I found found his gumshoe reporter role to be a little insufferable at times, and I thought he seemed like a loser compared to Nog, but one thing easily redeems these glaring flaws:Season four, episode three: The Visitor

At least Rom had the good sense to embezzle from the Nagus that one time. Maybe he is just letting them all think he is playing the fall guy while he robs them blind. The drunken master of the financial arts.

Yes, and I gotta say that it stands on Inner Light's shoulders. No way this episode could have happened without it.
To add to my earlier point about Sisko, his personal conflict is what really makes DS9 stick out to me. DS9 is about family, and personal struggles/conflict. More so than exploration and diplomacy, which are still there but through a more spiritual lens. That's what I loved about it, the family and Sisko is teh glue holding it together. He compromises his personal morals to get shit down, he punches Q etc.
God I love DS9, it's kinda hard to watch Voyager for the first time because I miss Jadzia and Quark and Nog.

I'm pretty sure that the Nagus thought Row was Quark the whole time. He gets Quarks name wrong all the fucking time. How fucked would it be if he meant for Quark to become the Don mega only to be fed Roms name instead by Moogie.

My headcanon is that Zek was never freed from what the Prophets did to him and that's why he decided to lead the Ferengi Alliance to financial ruination by appointing Rom

He was Nagus for too long. The senile old fool couldn't even play Tongo right in his later years and that was before female subversion made him a simp.
