I'd say if he was they'd call it a "kirk" instead of a mary sue since iirc the term grew out of shitty Trek fanfics

Kirk fucks up plenty and relies heavily on others where appropriate. There are also entire episodes about him making wrong decisions and having to realise it.

The entire subplot with his son is him bearing an uncloseable wound with him.
Also wanting to beat the tar out of that jeery Irish guy from the training academy is his heart's desire according to the desire planet.
Not all heroes are Sues.

No Kirk wasn't a Mary Sue. He couldn't fix the engines magically without Scotty, or solve scientific related problems without Spock, or perform medical procedures without Dr. McCoy. A Mary Sue could if a situation arose where they needed to.

It's also made clear that he studied heavily in the academy to the point of being bullied, but that that accounts for some degree of his knowledge and skills. He was not magically born a great captain.

The thing is, you can have an ordinary smart character do that shit sometimes.

But you had goddamn better have a big fat montage going on.
I'm fairly certain Captain Kirk could dedicate himself for months and Lorenzo's Oil a complex problem away.
But on Discovery they make a whole goddamn time travel red angel suit in 45 minutes. I know it's a science ship full of really smart people but jesus fuck man.

Any badass motherfucker can spend 18 months learning the ins and outs of a specialized sector of biochemistry if they're badass enough.
But what Alex Kurtzman doesn't know is that when you do it in 45 minutes you're not really badass. You're a goddamn Mary Sue.

Also, Lorenzo didn't get miraculously better. It only halted progression of the disease.

RIP Lorenzo, our sweet prince. RIP Star Trek's defiled corpse, death to the infidel Kurtzman.
