Time to settle this debate once and for all. Was it better than DS9? Did you personally like it better than DS9?

There are a lot of similarities between DS9 and B5 for sure but despite what they have in common they go about it complete differently IMO and I don't find them as easily comparable as most people. I love them both. I would maybe say that B5 is better if you consider both shows on their own and Trek never existed. That's pretty hard to do though. I'd also say that the very best of the best of DS9 is better than the best of the best of B5 episode for episode.

Babylon 5 had the stronger start for sure. DS9 has individual episodes in the middle of its run that stand out more. In both cases this is largely because DS9 doesn't rely on the arcplots so heavily and arcplots tend to be strongest early on. Both shows went to shit towards the end but arguably DS9 less so. That is to say Babylon 5's overarching plot is better but pick a random DS9 episode from the peak of its run vs an episode from the peak of B5 and DS9's will probably be better, even including the episodes that are part of a DS9 mini-arc (Dominion drama or whatever).

DS9 had the trek money in it and production was pretty good.
B5 was good too but it was a product of the 90s and it shows.

B5 has a tedious first season, made moreso by the fact that you have to watch it in order to understand later seasons even though it feels like filler, but is better overall

Bablyon 5 is both better and worse than DS9. When the writing is good it's fucking great but the depths of the cringe are also deeper.

It's got some Starship Troopers vibes that Star Trek would never touch sometimes.

"Excuse me crewman, but the bajorpjorp females eat their mates"

yep it's a very different world than Trek. Much more of a fascist dystopia.

If you like everything about DS9 except for the more childish or "family-friendly" aspects of it, you would definitely enjoy Babylon 5.

"We're not some Deep Space franchise!"

I think it depends on who you ask. I only got into Babylon 5 because of this board, and I'm finally finishing it up. I can say both series handled things differently. Honestly though, Babylon 5 doesn't feel like competition, but rather a companion piece to Star Trek. JMS is obviously influenced by The Original Series of Trek, and I can't help but have that same TNG/DS9 cozy feeling when I watch B5. There's been playful jabs at DS9 but if anything, B5 is very Trek while still doing its own thing. Honestly, when I see Walter Koenig I no longer think of Chekov but am reminded of Bester. To me, that's quite a feat by itself.

I saw so many people say it was a slog or that they hated the CGI, but going in with that knowledge never soured the experience for me. I embraced it for what it was because it was charming. The same can be said for TOS. I see a lot of Trek fans say they don't like TOS for this reason, that it's a product of its time. That's true and it's fair enough, but I went into TOS embracing the campiness of it all and I had a great time with that show. Remember, B5 was the first show to use CGI so extensively. I think it's an admirable effort.

Both DS9 and B5 have great episodes and both have TERRIBLE episodes (see: Move Along Home or Grey 17 Is Missing). But what's so endearing about B5 to me is that this was all a product of one man. The storytelling is amazing, the dialogue is so quotable, and it really subverts your expectations. Things in season 1 have major payoffs later on down the road and it's incredibly satisfying.

Maybe it was just because Babylon 5 came into my life at the right time, maybe I'm a contrarian trying to be "different" or whatever, but I honestly prefer Babylon 5 over DS9. Like, I love Bashir but my favorite doctor is Dr. Franklin. I will always love Star Trek which is precisely why I love B5 so much. It just...gets it. It's like if Star Trek was influenced by dystopian themes present in 1984, yet you never feel like this is a grimdark and brooding show. It is still very much light-hearted and fun, and I think the humor is actually done well.

To anyone "slogging through" season 1, just check out episode 10 "Believers" for me. That is one thing I'll say that B5 did better than DS9. In terms of better overall though, very subjective. I do hope more Trek fans check out Babylon 5 now that most of us have happened ship of Nu Trek. Who knows, you might end up loving it like I did.

...or not. No one ever listens to Zathras.

I always thought that Michael O'Hare had a great radio announcer voice.

I mean Sinclair was good but the show really benefited from getting Bruce Boxleitner as as his replacement.

Also I really can't stand Garibaldi's character. Fuck him and his stupid Daffy Duck framed picture above his bed.

I do like DS9 a bit better (juuuust a bit), and I also find that the big epic "lotr in space" approach to storytelling in B5 while commendable also hurts the show rewatchability. On the other hand, I must also say that what Straczynski did with Londo and G'kar remains unmatched, not even the best character arcs in Star Trek come close.

Personally I like Garibaldi, mostly because that scene from the future where he's gunning down endless waves of shadows with dual mini-guns and laughing like a madman.. but I gotta admit some of the Garibaldi-involved storylines dragged ass.

One good thing about Garibaldi is that if you pay close attention to his hairline, you can not only figure out what season you're in, but roughly what episode in the season, just from his hair. That man is the atomic clock of balding.

They are mostly equal shows. DS9 had more production value but B5 was an original series not relying on the fame of a it's predecessors. I'm a Trek guy through and through but I appreciate Babylon 5 for what it is.

Spot on
Both series also suffer from a weak final season, in my opinion. In DS9, the momentum of the series comes to a screeching halt at the beginning of S6 and there's a bunch of mostly filler (Its Only a Paper Moon is not included in this, and the bank heist episode is pretty fun, but pretty much everything else in the first half of s7 is kinda trash.. look for yourself). As soon as they're done dicking around, DS9 goes into this sprint to finish line to make up for lost time where they have some 8 mostly-linked episodes in a row. The flow of s7 is remarkably uneven, and even though it ultimately has a very satisfying ending, it seems like we had a better way to spend the tail end of DS9 meeting worthless whiny bitch Dax's family when she should have never been allowed to set foot on DS9 because of the taboos of the Trill. Would've been nice to have an epilogue episode or two instead.

As for B5, they thought they were cancelled at the end of s4 so they blew their entire storyline load. It's why s4 is so fucking great, well except for the complete character assassination of Lennier by the writers which felt ingenuine and cringe. B5's season 5 is barely watchable because they replace Ivonova for basically no good reason and act like her replacement is just her. It's awful.. I basically hate every scene with whatever the fuck the new lady's name is, and they sure love to cram her in as much as possible. The reason for this change is the most upsetting part.. basically when they tried to contact the actress lady she didn't get back to them within 24 hours or something so the showrunner guy got his panties in a bunch and replaced her.

B5's last season is much worse than DS9's. At least the war episodes in DS9 are still good, all B5's got left storyline wise is mostly Bester stuff, which although entertaining wasn't compelling enough for me to make the final season worth its time

I wonder if we really needed something like that. I feel like B5 in and of itself is satisfying enough for me. Added anything more like Crusade could muddy things up. I'm kind of leaning toward, "glad that never happened" but also would've been interesting to see. We may never know. If a reboot happens now it could be plagued with identity politics and dumbing down for marketability so not sure if want.
