I think it's just a Bajoran thing to have attitude, probably something to do with all the space racism.

Ro Laren lived a very fucked up life. Grew up in a refugee camp, watched the Cardassians torture her father to death while eating candy, joined Starfleet because she was ashamed of where she came from, ended up on that away mission where everyone besides her got killed and was sent to prison.

Yarr grew up avoiding bukake gangs and was pretty chill if a bit after school special about drugs.

I only just realized that Seska and Ro Laren aren't the same character

Just a fucking cunt. Jk. She was one my favorites.
First she was representative of as you know Bajoran women which were obviously aggressive strong, modeled in a way bit like the Irish. She would always kind of remind me of Sinead O'Connor. Second, her character arc was eventually to become a marquis. Most likely the actress did such a great job an had so much chemistry she stayed well past her expiration. I do recall her not being a full cast member when she first appeared. The charter herself had a brutal life, even was intentionally forced to watch her father tortured then killed in front of her as child.

It's a shame she never came back in DS9 or something. With all the times they do the whole 'random Bajoran was bffs with Kira during the occupation', they could've shoved Ro in one of those or in one of the Maquis episodes with Eddington.

The character of Kira was originally supposed to be Ro Laren when the writers were coming up with DS9, but her actress didn't want the job. This is why they have somewhat similar personalities

Not because Bajorans are cunts

Didn't something similar happen with a character in Voyager or am I mistaken?

I think they may have offered Ro either show- her DS9 character spun off into Kira, and her VOY character became Torres

Tom Paris was meant to be Nick Locarno from The First Duty, down to being played by the same actor, but some weirdness over royalties stopped it.

IIRC the writer(s?) from TNG wouldve recieved royalties for every ep that Paris wouldve been in the show (i.e. almost every episode) so the execs said fuuuuck that lets rewrite it

Interesting. Torres and Kira are both way more unreasonable than Ro. She wasn't constantly un-chill without good reason like Kira was. Maybe if we had seen a post-defection Ro, her character would've been written in pee pee poo poo style as well.
Fuck, they really did make Bajorans be consistently trash.

They should've given Kira more episodes where she's just hanging out with the crew or something, or at least some more scenes here and there to show that she has more going on than being pissed off about Bajor.

Luckily that sort of thing can be easily head canoned. paris was in jail for killing that retard in the formation flying incident, got discharged, then joined the maqui and sucked at that too.

That works but Paris' early history of butting heads with his father doesn't really fit in with Nick Locarno's over-achiever background which is more like trying to please him instead. There isn't really enough time between The First Duty and the start of Voyager for him to hang around in France and the like for a believable length of time.

We can assume he was at the academy before Shithead started since he delayed entry. Plus it seems the Academy doesn't take that long any way seeing as all the new officers are mid 20s. Given transporters he had plenty of time to hang out. The switch to an Admiral father instead of some low level nobody does mix it up. But you can assume his push for the dangerous starburst move was to impress him and he probably had a rough time both trying to gain some sort of psychological validation from his father and also not giving a fuck. It's not a clean cut, but it's not hard to gloss over a bit character from TNG as they wouldn't get any back story any way. Besides Kim was supposed to be shithead with his old chum Locarno.

I checked and there's about three in-universe years between The First Duty and Caretaker. The timeline is still a little tight for going from disgraced cadet to Maquis member assuming he also needs to have spent six months or so at the rehab colony but I suppose he was captured on his first mission, just you'd rewrite it that he joined the Maquis for redemption instead of trying to find a fight. They also said his time in France was as a cadet and I could see that fitting in to his background as Locarno also (pulling strings behind the scenes to get a good posting or something).

I can live with that explanation too.

So fair enough it works better than I thought. I also forgot that the reason he was in spaceprison in the first place was so close to The First Duty as well.

Michelle Forbes, the actor who played Ro Laren, was too good for Trek. She is the most menacing woman I've seen in film or TV, ever. Bar none. Watch BSG Razor. I wouldn't fuck with Michelle Forbes in real life. She has an intensity that other women just do not have. If anyone here is familiar with the Pander Bros. version of Grendel from the late 80s, Michelle Forbes is the only woman that could play Christine Spar. She has the kind of dangerous intensity that makes Charlize Theron in Monster look like Reese Witherspoon in American Psycho: a subservient bitch. Ro Laren, and the actress who played her, are top shelf badasses.

It's unfortunate she never had her big break.

I personally really liked her in Escape From LA, even though her role in that is pretty minor.

She was pretty rad in Kalifornia, too. I wonder how different DSN would have been with Ro instead of Kira. Like the anon above said, Forbes has a unique intensity and it would have been interesting to see Ro go head to head with Sisko.

I always found Ro Laren way hotter than Troi or other fapbait that they inserted into TNG, was really jealous of Riker when he got to have her.
