Been dealing with IRL business but I'm still in the thick of 420chan dev. New thread with consolidated notes in OP that didn't hit the bump limit.

Feel free to discuss changes, report bugs and request specfic fixes I may have missed, or float feature requests.

These changes are from March 15 until this post

>Hover previews no longer render halfway across your screen, and attempt to stay within the bounds of the browser viewport.

>Hover previews are refined and do not display buttons and links that you can't interact with

>Special input shortcut buttons for bold, italic, preformatted, strikeout, subscript, superscript and spoilers have been added to the post box and quick reply box

>Quick reply no longer displays oddly when opened on a short OP

>Quick reply now retains your text when clicked on subsequent posts, allowing for easier replies to multiple users without copying and pasting or manually typing reflink numbers

>SSL has been forced by default, bringing HTTP/2 benefits and security to all

>Post box tooltps have been restored to a functional state, arguably less useful with the shortcut buttons but might as well be thorough

>Changes to the post box to add client side validation to prevent threads being submitted without a subject line, reducing errors encountered by inebriated or enthusiastic users

>Random Thread button has been restored

>Bans and warns now immediately reflect visually in a thread without requiring a successive post to regenerate the thread caches

>Animated GIF thumbnails now retain their animation cycle so manual resizing is no longer required for autoplay

>420chan was completely converted to Unicode under the hood, hover previews and post expansion no longer exhibits odd behaviour and corrupted looking characters when fancy quotation marks or other non-ASCII characters have been used

>Issues involving black pixels disappearing in thumbnails have been resolved

March 21

>Hover previews of WebMs in an expanded state no longer duplicate the player and potentially cause ear damage

>Reflinks to OP outside of hover previews are now marked with (OP)

>Staff-posted OPs can now be properly expanded

March 22

>File size limits have been increased to a baseline of 20000KB on all boards

>Old undiscovered bug involving nesting esoteric tags in such a manner to trigger a denial of service has been fixed

March 25

>Board icons for /tinfoil/, /vape/, /art/, and /sport/ have been added

March 26

>Navigation menus have been visually refreshed to improve clarity and usability on modern high resolution devices that aren't running 1024x768 CRTs

>Multiple boards have been consolidated into /stem/

>/a/ - Anime & Manga Discussion has been added

>Missing icon for /lang/ has been created

>PDF and EPUB filetypes have been enabled on /lit/

April 11

>Image expansion now attempts to properly constrain the image to the browser window on both desktop and mobile

>Boards have gained some progressive enhancements to display better on handheld devices and smaller displays, the beginnings of proper mobile support

>Postbox has been adjusted to handle the advertisements better in some browser/OS combinations

May 15

>Expand button has been restored after a partial rewrite for performance and layout change reasons

May 24

>Lots of backend infrastructure and networking adjustments have been made to alleviate sporadic connectivity problems being exhibited for some global regions. This was tough and took days of prep work and log analysis to track down what was causing certain problems, but Cloudflare 5XX errors should be mostly eliminated.

I mean I clicked on a pic of a drawing of a woman with big titties, instead of resizing it opened a new tab and then some sort of ExoClick started downloading because I, like an idiot, set my administrator thingy to not tell me when shit starts to download.

I'm honestly too afraid to go back. I apologize. I barely have any computer knowledge but this doesn't happen on /sa/.

Can someone try for me? I'm sorry.

pic probably unrelated.

As long as you're working on a catalogue how about a post history in the options drop-down for all the inebriated people that cant figure out where they were posting.

I really don't get the logic behind autoplaying Gifs. Not only are they the most annoying shit ever but they make threads load so slowly and hang for minutes or until you refresh. I mean this whole website is run from a tiny server that just can't handle this.
I just don't get why it became a thing, nobody likes it.
Also the pop up ads on /h/ suuuucck.

BROKEN!

Thumbnails don't display!
Thumbnail does expand when clicked and it does then show image BUT you cannot undo the expand with another click.
The gif or image is stuck as expanded / playing.

Nigga that is the ugliest Apple 2 possible.

Those were the computers for the students in classrooms until I was in 5th grade.
At one point one of them had a big boy Apple II and I was like WHAT MAGESTY IS THIS?
Mainly because I probably wasn't allowed to notice how great the teachers' Apple II GSes were.
Anyway the Macs that followed were shit and they chucked the GSes out with the regular Apple IIs, which is a goddamn crime since everyone knows they had the best version of Oregon Trail ever made on the IIGS

>Browser, version, and addons please
Does it matter? worked fine 2 days ago. The site was loading super fast when posting.
How is loading thumbs and gifs suddenly an issue if it never was before?
It's been auto loaded since 10 years! Literally no reason.
You're gonna listen to some /h/ retard's whims and ruin the tradition of autogifs?
10 years of autogif creation and tradition out the window just like that?

Not only have you plastered ads everywhere, now you're cheaping out on thumbs in 2019? LMAO.

I'm sad to say but, in general, imo you've been doing nothing but worse for this chan for the last 3 years.
I recently came back after 6 months away for the first time in 10 years due to complete lack of modding spam and the rock bottom user count.
Site loaded fast and posting was lighting fast! Good job!
But now you broke it.

If it doesn't work for me it ain't gonna work for a lot of people.
I don't trust this place enough to give out browser info.
You're gonna have to do some compat tests.
But site mechanics was better than ever just 2 days ago. I suggest reverting the thumbs and auto play changes.
Your major problem is the low user count and literally crazy people spamming boards like /high/ with their anger and hate towards users who actually contribute content and do so in a friendly or funny manner.
The deranged hate sperg like R9TB/QmX with 30% of posts on page 0 /high/ who thinks he's a mod who can without humor hate and shame valuable posts because he doesn't like thing, that's your problem. Especially when the user count is so low.
He's dominating the board and turning normal people off.

Anyway, good luck. The site still has value.
Also, you can't middle mouse board names in the Media Miscellanea etc... drop down menus. Make to open in new tab. Used to work before IIRC.

and here comes the Kirts Kewl Klub's parade of angry sycophants exactly on cue to protect Kirt's precious feeling by hurling bland, meaningless insults at anyone who goes to the trouble of offering legitimate, helpful constructive criticism regarding technical changes which directly impact how the end user can or can't interact with the site and in turn affects the site's user-generated content (AKA all of it).
i guess its better to never complain and just leave the site if its not any good, right? the sites ever decreasing activity level isn't a problem, its a feature

That reminds me. I have two minor complaints about the BBCode buttons:

  1. The focus on the input box disappears when I click one of the buttons.

2. When I select text within the input box and hit one of the buttons so I can apply BBCode to that text, the text is deselected and the BBcode appears at the end of the post.

Nothing board-breaking or anything, just a couple of nits I wanted to pick.

Whatever you've been doing, 420chan is now the only website I've ever encountered that absolutely shits on Vivaldi. Everything that ever worked on Chromium always worked the same on Vivaldi.

While the thumbnail shit is loading, the entire goddamn interface hangs.

Page up and page down work but the scroll wheel doesn't.

I was employed full-time when I revamped the advertisements and besides the point your stance is bizarrely implying that websites should not be allowed to generate revenue with advertisements

New cannabis-focused ad networks were the primary reason I was able to dedicate more time to 420chan development before everything went south IRL as mentioned here >>255851 which I'm still dealing with all kinds of nonsense over, hoo boy

Yes, it clearly states the Patreon is financially supporting me personally. The $1500 tier is labelled as covering my rent in full. There's a $4000 Patreon tier for removing the majority of ads, and adblock users get a Patreon notice.

> using the website as an excuse not to look for a job?

Probably none, doesn't change the reality that some of you get way too worked up for no reason over silly shit like copypasta and blame everything that's detracting from SUPER SERIOUS DISCUSSION on /asp/

Mods only locked/banned so much because I was busy with work and Spardot was busy with college and not paying attention so they steered towards heavy-handed moderation without administrative guidance. This went on for almost 3 years.

If that's your view of patronage then you must have a sad outlook on life, fact is the community really rallied together in April and saved my life when I was dealing with a bad, bad situation.

Additionally, any income from 420chan and Patreon enables me to dedicate time to the site. I'm 32 years old, married, put my wife through college, and can't justify dedicating significant amounts of time to continued development and infrastructure improvements without financial support to do so.

You are taking advantage of the good and generous users of this website. The Patrons are meant to keep you afloat until you get your shit together. Selling us emoticons on Patrons is a scummy way of paying us back.

Give us gold membership passes thats lets us change our RNG from Typical Green to Gold and no ads. Don't take it any further than you already have. Its funny how im one your patrons and i still need to adblock all the shit you added. A new horsecock or a forced meme emoticons spammed by your patrons is going to piss off everyone.

I'm going to be sending all patrons a link to begin testing an authentication system that includes reduced ad zones for patrons and benefit/post/reply tracking.

This also allows for oft-requested features like cross-board ignores, IP-agnostic notifications, etc.

Emoticons are a silly little perk that don't make individual users stand out as anyone can use said emotes, but I understand your feedback here. It's an optional thing. I don't even have to accept an emote submission if it's too ridiculous.

The actual plan here is a benefit token system that patrons accrue at all levels, and non-patrons accrue at a slow rate based on user activity. You might know them as stank tokens. These can be used for various effects and perks or given to other users. Maybe even grant access to /stankass/.

Hey Kirt, have you ever thought about revising the site to make it into a hybrid of the old chan style with something more modern? I mean like introducing an account system like your old AnonAccount idea since it would let us more effectively ignore the shitheads that VPN-hop since they would have to keep making accounts. It's not a total fix, but it would work better than the current ignore system, at least. Plus you wouldn't even need to force tripfaggery with it and let people stay with RNG names if they want, but their posting would be tied to an account instead of their IP.

Another thing you could incorporate would be to incorporate something popular from social media, but keep the cancerous circlejerk echo chamber-y thing out, and that's allowing users to tag posts and threads in some way. We could have an actual 420chan HoF page with posts and threads with a lot of stank votes/limes/whatever. You could also let people jenk posts for being jenky and then we could also have a collection of the jenkiest 420chan posts. But since this isn't circlejerk there would be no shitty "downvoting" of posts, or worse, hiding of posts if people brigade something.

I dunno if it would be too much work, but you're funemployed now so what else are you going to do with your time? Jokes aside, I just think the 4chins/futaba or whatever style is really outdated these days and this site could use a layout change to further differentiate itself from the relic that is 4chins.

>The entire structure of the navigation menu was rewritten to allow for responsive display modes

>URL generation for boards, threads, and pagination was rewritten for proper canonical metatags and deeplinking

>Board content metadata generators were added (JSON-LD/Schema, OpenGraph)

>User action related redirects were refactored to eliminate many errant or unnecessary 301/302 responses

>Pagination was rewritten to allow page number state to be available to the entire template parser

>Several instances of board-name-specific conditional templates were removed for housekeeping

>Most moderator actions now have proper redirects and cache regeneration

Some of the biggest and most frustrating updates to any piece of software are indistinguishable to most users as a spec requirement. If you didn't notice much, that was the goal.

No, the software that uses languages, frameworks, methodologies, specifications, and design patterns that words, sometimes large and intimidating sounding, sometimes extremely buzzwordy crap some San Fran tech wankers thought up 5 minutes before a conference presentation after they had dumped half their initial first round VC seeding into brand development think tanks and focus testing, because their unpaid Berkeley graduate intern just said the product name rhymed with ‘horse vagina’ after delivering a tray of Starbucks and retreating to his sleeping bag in the backseat of his 1997 Honda Civic after not being allowed to sleep for days, and they just can’t take that chance for their big product reveal as they’re hoping to catch Jeff Bezos’ attention for a buyout even though they already have a product for same day interactive Twitch holistic foot cream delivery, and lastly sometimes just boring and descriptive, is what makes websites work.

Also semantic isn’t a big word.

How complex would it be to add a NSFW-image-toggle button to posting?
Maybe I'm just a small lonely cum stained minority, but it'd be nice to have /b/ more SFW browsable whithout having to change any rules or community guidelines (other than use the toggle when you should or else). Maybe another toggle for disabling the censoring in the options-dropdown for lazy horners.
The SFW crowd would have a better time while the NSFW side could post more risque stuff without bothering anybody.

Regardless if it's doable or not, thank you for all the great work so far!

So, this shit is happening on the front page after a page reload now. I think this is a conflict between Firefox's new-ish "scroll lock on reload" thing and 420's lazyloader Javascript. It's the only possibility I can think of, since shit like this doesn't happen on any other site I go to.

Same configuration as >>256216 except for the Firefox version (it's the most recent stable release now).

But it was doing this without the custom CSS. I admit that I have uBlock Origin on, so maybe adblocking is doing something funky there.

Maybe it's time to think about moving the Cannabis section to lifestyle.

I'm in the middle of "Start Low, Go Slow" - is it really worth taking the time to do such a move?

Either way, I'm super happy to be around and still vaporizing Cannabis on/off instead of smoking it!

Also, NO MORE DORITOS! And NO MORE SMARTIES! WOOHOO! Finally free from sugar! For a while!

Firefox version 68.0.1 (64-bit), still a very functional website (for those who are used to the format, of course)

Please add (you)s to posts we've made and next to replies to posts you've made (i.e. >>255561 (you) when it shows up in the body of a post). Also fix whatever it is that broke seeing the inline replies to a post (unless that's just me but I mean seeing them after a post's post number, I can still hover over quotes to see the post they're replying to). A watchlist would also be nice.

On a more just general QoL note the buttons that you can use to add e.g. spoiler tags are great but when you've already got a cursor or whatever you call the vertical typing line inside a reply box they should insert there instead of at the end of the post. Also when you insert them having the cursor start inside them instead of after them would be nice. If you want to be really slick allow us to highlight a bunch of text then hit the spoiler button and it automatically sticks the tags before and after the highlighted text.

Also having the quick reply box and the top-of-thread box share the same text but again that's just a QoL thing that can be easily lived without. Having the quick reply box float outside of the thread and pin to the screen so it scrolls with you falls into this category too.

Multiple files per post, still respecting the overall 20MB is good if you can manage it. On that note what are the requirements and supported encodings for webms? VP8, VP9, audio streams, subtitle streams etc. Any odds of getting PDF support?

Whatever you did recently that allowed VPN users to actually use the site is great. Previously we were blocked outright and there are plenty of countries in the world where VPN use is essential never mind those who just prefer the privacy. If that was unintentional then please don't fuck with it.

Gib catalogs.

>Quick reply now retains your text when clicked on subsequent posts, allowing for easier replies to multiple users without copying and pasting or manually typing reflink numbers
This was long overdue. Thanks.

>Multiple boards have been consolidated into /stem/
Good idea. /tinfoil/ and /spooky/ could also be combined and any candidates for that would be good.

Obviously. They performed well enough to cover rent, utilities, car etc for the last few months while I'm actively interviewing as I already said over there >>257379

In all seriousness though, after working with higher end ad networks I know for a fact it wouldn't be unreasonable for ads on 420chan to do 6 figures. Relying on that sort of thing as a consistent main income would be foolish, I'm quite aware, but this really put into perspective why Hiroyuki split 4ch up with a worksafe domain to get access to premium ad exchanges. Likely laughing at moot all the way to the bank now.

So you added the webp support.

Unfortunately my enthusiasm for a GIF replacement has waned. Might get back into it.
I'm sick of all Webp files being converted GIFs with all the gif limitations. That's bullshit.
A Webp file can look so good while being small, and kind to the CPUs of the world unlike video.

Editing tools are shit tho. Probably gonna be a bunch of static frames and a script to stitch them up for me.

This is me testing whether you've updated the goddamn image filter to allow direct uploads. Because if you're converting gifs to webp without allowing them directly, you may be a real motherfucker.

Or y'know, it was an oversight.

IT FAILED! Goddamnit Kirt! Now you're converting files to a format that can't be reuploaded. This cannot stand long-term bruh.

Being able to drag and drop files into the upload box would be good. That's normal behaviour now in html 5 for that sort of thing so it should be easy to do. Particularly if we're going to get multiple files per post it'll make dumping a ton of images at once easier.

I've got an idea for the board, if maybe some time in the future you might get the time.

That's a mode where posts are separated into 26 letter lines to make it easier to read.
Although, you can just make your window smaller to accommodate this so no biggie.

There's extra support for it and stuff on sites like Facebook and Twitter.

I remember one time I tried to use the standard drag and drop for the file upload and it just loaded the goddamn image and nuked the text of my post.

That was years ago, but by god if I'll ever forget it.

When did YTMND start to go down the tubes?

cool so the picture issue was fixed on my tablet and phone but now when a thread is too long, like the thread reply box is too long horizontally for my screen, no horizontal scroll bar will appear and I have to zoom out to view anything in full. The page will orient itself with the new right margin from the extended thread box and cut off anything on the left side for however much longer the thread box is than the page.

Also still can't hide threads.

please and thanks almighty overlord KIRT and our gracious superqueen SPARDOT
