I figure One Piece will be put under the spotlight now that Naruto is officially over. I was curious as to how many people in /616/ keep up with One Piece. Hopefully this thread will reach the limit like the Naruto thread did. If not, then no big deal. One Piece was being brought up in the Naruto general, as well as the party thread.

If you haven't fucked with it before, it's a pretty solid manga. The fights aren't really memorable, but the characters make up for everything. And SOME of the films were surprisingly good, unlike the Naruto films. However, reading One Piece is a terrible chore to do until Water 7 arc. Alabasta and Skypiea arc were ridiculously long and boring. I promise you that you'll be rewarded for your efforts once you reach Water 7.

Supposedly the manga is at a really good part, but I haven't read it since Sabo ate the Mera Mera no Mi. But I promised myself that I was marathon these chapters once the semester is over.

>4kids dub

Didn't One Piece have two dubs? 4kids and Funimation? The Funimation dub was actually good.

Yeah, you should definitely give One Piece another shot. If you wanna speed through it a little bit, you should watch Episode of Nami, Bloom in the Winter, and that Alabasta movie. That way you can avoid sitting through long arcs.

To be fair, the anime wasn't bad during pre-timeskip. After pre-timeskip, the animation just looked awful. I really hope the anime gets its shit together one day. Even Shippuuden doesn't look that bad.

One piece is fantastic and its been going since 99

I initially got into one piece in 2002 after going to Japan. I was a huge dragonball and dragonball Z fan. After consuming all the dragonball manga in its 42 volumes for incredibly cheap prices that shocked me. I was still hungry for more manga and anime. Which i had also been buying up while i was there already.

I began to learn of One Piece, and i quickly percieved it as the most popular manga within Japan. Despite being whole-y orginal i saw the connection and references that were there to dragonball through echiro oda's inspiration as a fan growing up with it. I thought that the name of MONKEY D Luffy was a great way to carry the torch, and meaningfully synchronistic in that Goku's connection taken from sun wukong the monkey king.

One piece's story is one that i think was always suited to the length it currently has, and i've always loved the style of the battles, because there super creative. They have elements of grueling power based strength offs but the way they function through the whimsical but earnest nature of the gum gum fruits and the unique powers and prowess of the one piece inhabitants has always been compelling.

it gave each fight cruciallity even if it wasn't the big fight against crocidile or something like that.

Also the story and characters gets exceedingly more powerful at tapping into emotion and even becomes spirtual more often then not.

While in some manga and anime the philosphical speeches of the characters might come off as just apart of the anime and or fan service to a broader japanese identity at least in their translations.

One pieces characters go through so much suffering and meditations on their ideals that it becomes hard not to get emotional over it, it truly is a resonating story. I won't spoil any of the moments.

But at Oda puts the spirtuality of the manga and its ethos and the ideals of the characters and luffy as the guiding ideals of the story that are mean to inspire you, through the test and in some ways has very tragic endings to those beliefs that the characters and you the reader have to make piece with.

He has the struggling for holding onto you beliefs as the moral center and triumph for such a long time in the book, and then has something that talks about the reality of having to let go.

Just the conflict between Usopp and Luffy is a wrenching example of this dynamic.

>it has its weak arcs (Skypiea, Thriller Bark)

Honestly, I'd like Skypiea arc a lot more if it wasn't so dragged out. It introduced some interesting characters such as Cricket, Gan Fall, Wiper, and Enel. Also, that ending with Luffy ringing that bell for Cricket made up for that entire arc, imo.

Thriller Bark was meh. Learning about Brook's past was the best part about it. Another good part was when Robin was unimpressed with something Fanky, Chopper, Sanji, and Usopp did.

Nobody really deserves that kind of bashing, yeah, but I'd almost make an exception for Naruto.
Ok let's make one thing clear, Part 1 Naruto was a decent shonen with good promise, Part 2 Nardo is what the fuck it is. Basically Shippuden should have been to the Naruto series what Enies Lobby has been to One Piece, but it failed hard. I'd shit on Shippuden every day of the week.

Back to the OP topic: this Law/Rocinante flashback has been a really good flashback but I don't think any flashback can beat Kyros's, just for the sheer fact that it was one chapter long and it had everything it needed to have in just 18-20 pages. After that giant ass Otohime flashback I still get nightmares, despite it being good too and being very important to the plot. Of course, when you have all the chapters lined up you don't notice the pain people had to go through when they were first released.

my advice would be to read the manga, because its fast and easy and better and the anime has neat fights and dialogue and so on but horrible pacing.

If you marathon the manga it would probably only take you a day or two, every arc has neat shit so it isn't like nothing is happening for extended periods of time until Luffy learns how to shoot a compressed blood bullet or do the Kaio Ken attack.

Why doesn't Goku use the Kaio Ken attack literally ever again after that first time he used it? Are those beams everybody shoots like, hot or something, or what? I know the Ken Zan disc cuts shit but everybody is always getting hit by these kame hame has and they just act like they've been punched really hard. What the fuck?

Woah, if you want to be awesome, sure. The whole series is pretty much uniformly a couple of badasses defending convictions, dreams, and the power of friendship, along with bizarre power fights. The people they fight generally do the most absurdly fucking awful things they can do to a large group of people for basically no reason, and when arc bosses get beaten, they lose satisfyingly hard.

You could just read it online, though. But if you buy it, it'll be a good thing. A 200 dollar, very good thing. That you could just read online.

You should buy it.

I completely disagree. Oda's got this way of drawing fights that, unlike in many other manga, really makes you feel the impact of every punch. And it's never really a matter of who has the higher powerlevel either. Unique powers and creative ways people use them.

I think the action is some of the best out there.

It'd be pretty cool if law ends up killing doffy and somehow becomes a villain though, but that likely won't happen--also are there any (real) D villains? I'm also leaning towards Big Mum settling things in the end. Holy shit this arc has delivered. Also, luffy killing anybody does not seem likely but we'll see.

Zoro putting on his bandana always means someone is going to get fucked up. Also I was proud of Usopp. Since he awakened his haki, he no longer needs to act like a bitch in close combat. He can just sit back like a real sniper and do his thing.

Well he hasn't changed his swords in quite a while so his style hasn't changed. When he lost Yubashiri and replaced it with Shusui, the deal was that Shusui was much heavier than Yubashiri and it was a much stronger sword (probably because of it's higher worth), so he had to adapt, and anyway it made his techniques stronger than before.
Whenever he's going to replace the Sandai Kitetsu with one of his stronger "brothers", you're going to see him having to adapt once again.

Nice detail in this chapter where Zoro starts filling his swords with Haki.
I also need to compliment Oda and his team because the drawings are just amazing, Pica is something ridicoulous.

It really does. I didn't hate Skypiea but it sure does drag on at points. Half the time I'd be impressed with the visuals or the fight with Enel but usually I'd be thinking "god just get back to the grand line already". I've changed my mind about Enel though, he's not a generic evil for the sake of evil villian. He's just a greedy manchild. I would think he probably got his power early in his life and never had to ask or work for anything as a result of his strength. He does make sense as a character in retrospect.

Chopper's arc was mostly boring except for that hilarious king who took over, but Arlong Park is entirely worth reading. Nami's backstory is emotional as hell and Arlong is an especially hateable motherfucker. Also it introduces Hachi who's great, he gets his own cover page arc later where he finds the ultimate takoyaki ingredients. Sanji's arc was good too.

Yeah I finished that a few days ago, it's great shit. It was everything I could want in a one piece arc. Brooke is hilarious, come to think of it Luffy has wanted a musician on his boat since the series began. I suppose that finishes off the crew now.

Wait, it's pretty clear that his haki is incomplete as it doesn't manage to cover his whole body, he uses it to keep the air in his limbs for extra power but the waist is still a big balloon. Then he just covers his abs too as a fuck you to Doffy and overpowers Doffy in haki powerlevel. Da hell?

I think Gear Fourth will be like Jojo part 3's second opening, I swear everyone was saying what the fuck is this shit the first time they heard it then everyone was liking it. I'm already liking it, it looks dumb yeah, but Luffy IS dumb, he's inflating his fucking bones for christ's sake, he's not supposed to make much sense. And actually, this powerup is even logical as it's the combination of every technique he knows. Props to Oda taking a shot at himself for settling down for this form by having Doffy making fun of the form, even he knew it was garbage by looking at it. Of course he made it awesome right after with the moves Luffy started doing

I live in a beach town, and it won't make me look like a weeaboo faggot or anything, it looks like every other shirt they sell at the tourist shops. It's not like I'm wearing a shirt with blatant anime characters on it, that would be embarrassing as fuck. And if someone actually sees it and knows what it is, I make a new friend.

Now I don;t travel in social circles where I am likely to ever meet someone who will want to fuck me over an Attack On Titan shirt.

Although I was wearing a shirt today with the Captain America logo and a soccer mom stopped me to talk about how excited she was to see Age Of Ultron and give me a whole fangirl rant about how inspirational Cap is for children. I should've made a move.

Glad I finished up right at this point. I got chills when I saw luffy's reflection in doflamingo's glasses. Judging by the pattern the series has gone so far I bet next arc will be another funtimes adventure focused one. unless this whole thing is just setup for a Kaido arc.

Yeah they still use it. The only musical accompaniment that I really hate is that jaunty ragtime piano they play during any celebratory or off the cuff scene.

Hey, Where the fuck did like, half of the Straw Hat crew go? Haven't seen Brooke or Nami or Chopper in ages, did they go somewhere? I think I remember them going somewhere.

I didn't know any of the one piece music when I started reading this, so I just played jojo and hunter x hunter music the whole time. This specific part of jojo op1 is now permanently one piece related to me cause I kept timing it to climactic points. https://youtu.be/6hRXxnTue5w?t=52s

It always looked cheap and unimpressive but post timeskip is just depressingly bad. They just don't care anymore. I don't think they ever did, even early on the pacing was god awful and the animation never really jumped up for the fights like other shonen. You dont really feel the impact of attacks either, not like in the manga. Even fucking shippuden looks nice when it really needs to and isnt on filler. It's unfortunate because there's parts of the manga that would be incredible to see animated properly. I should check out that alabasta movie I wanna see luffy vs crocodile with a movie budget.

Sanji, Brooke, Nami and Chopper are on the Thousand Sunny and en route to the next island on the map, they escaped during the first round of Law vs Doflamingo.

Doing a quick re-reading on the arc did wonders for me, it is really well-written, the only minus was that the executives were a little too easy for the others to defeat.

It's not that they don't care anymore. It's really really hard to make a 22 minute cartoon. Usually, it takes months to make one episode. But there has to be a new episode of One Piece every single week. No breaks. Of course they have to cut corners. It's absolutely necessary.

it's not out of nowhere. Awakenings were mentioned by Crocodile back in Impel down when he said the Jailer beast are ''awakened'' zoans. I don't blame you forgetting it though, I forgot all about that till Doffy mentioned it again.

I wonder if it even goes back further, I should check. Haki was hinted at for hundreds of chapters, from the first few arcs even. hell I think the first chapter has shanks using conqueror's haki. I don't understand how Oda can be so patient. Other authors would have blown their wad in the first 100 chapters on a lot of this shit.

That's not a justification that's an inherent flaw in the show. The damn thing only exists to advertise the manga and make money with the lowest possible effort. It's not worth watching. The show is more or less irrelevant now, since the official color version of the manga covers every volume released so far except for dressrosa.

And with paramecia it seems you can extend your ability beyond just your own body, and have a much more elaborate control of your power than just transforming a limb or something. I think mingo healing his body with the strings is also an example of awakening, though it's just a hunch. Presumably Luffy could make things around him rubbery when he awakens, if he hasn't already. What he's doing with his rubber abilities and haki right now might even count as awakening. we'll just have to wait for more info I suppose.
Lydia Grimway - Sun, 10 May 2015 15:58:59 EST F421LkRQ No.39369 Reply
So I guess Chopper still doesn't know, but Monster Point is essentially his DF's awakening? Which sounds interesting, I like when secondary characters hide something very important inside them, weird abilities or important secrets.
Or maybe the whole Rumble Ball thing is a way to work around awakening, or was since now Chopper can almost totally control his powers. Still, no other Zoan actually showed a level of control near to his, besides MAYBE Lucci and Kaku (the latter through sheer silly bullshit), and Chopper probably doesn't even know what he's actually doing with his powers. Or maybe when they all reunite in Wano, Chopper is gonna be like: "Yo man awakening? It's when you use your powers to the max, didn't you know? ...You didn't?"
We'll see anyway, Oda could always let this shit go uncovered for some other 200 chapters, like he always does

iunno, death has been reserved to flashbacks and marineford. It does sound plausible to me, but i also feel death is reserved for more dramatic moments and not simply plot in one piece. Well we'll see. What's weird though is that blackbeard, as bad as he is, hasn't done anything overtly evil. he hasn't enslaved anybody, pointlessly murdered or massacred. I'm pretty sure he'll be the 'final boss' but he hasn't been portrayed yet to be THE evilest.

I'm sure he'll become larger scale threat soon enough. People carrying the Will of D tend to have a huge effect on the world and so far he's the only D who could be called evil. I think whatever his plans are will have catastrophic global repercussions. He won't waste his time on general slavery/pillaging any more than he has to to fund his ambition. I wouldn't be surprised if he's been doing that offscreen and it's referenced later.

I liked thriller bark because it's goofy fun with as many dancing skeletons as an oingo boingo video, and also awesome to look at. they even took on another shichibukai so it wasn't lacking in action (none of the action in skypiea really wowed me except the stuff with Enel. There's a theory going around that says he already has 3 devil fruits. His logia (yami yami no m) his paramicia (gura gura no mi) and his yet to be introduced zoan devil fruit who many speculate to be a cerberus dog, which would explain how he's able to have 2 other fruits

I think it's pretty clear he's already got a bunch of other fruits since he sent Burgess to take the Mera Mera no Mi like it was an everyday job. He's going to say no and piss everyone off to varying degrees, whereupon there will be a chase wherein he looks happy.

Don't latch on to Luffy, he has no goal other than his own dream. Thats the basis of a Straw Hat, is that they each have vivid, goal-like dreams they're more than willing to suffer to attain. If you're a bunch of wops who got turned into toys, got rescued by Luffy and then let your new dream be to further Luffy's goals, then you ain't a Straw Hat, son.

You don't have to try very hard to find those types of guys in manga.

Well, Sechs isn't exactly friendly, having killed nearly all of his clone-sisters and cut off Figure Four's arm... But compared to Zekka he's a pussy cat. I mean, Zekka's ultimate goal in life is to destroy a planet with one punch. Now that's something Yujiro could get behind, lol.

I suspect Zekka could be a Yujiro expie himself, which would make Tunpo the Doppo Orochi expie. Yujiro is an Akuma expie and Doppo is explicitly an expie of Mas Oyama.

Which kind of comes full circle because IMO Akuma is kind of based on Sonny Chiba, who was taught by, and also played Mas Oyama in a couple of biopics.

Its like, 16 pages of animal people talking to magic samurais, I think they could interpret a vague storyboard and write in the dialogue. I had to read exclusively Bleach this week ]and they made Yoruichi a sexy nude catgirl and then the bad guy attained his ULTIMATE FORM.
