I want to get into Marvel comics, and I want to start with X-Men and Spider-Man. Where the fuck does one start, and where do I go?

Spiderman: Either way back at #1 or at the Dan Slott reboot if you want to have ~100 issues and then be caught up with the current series. Or Ultimate Spider-Man, most newer comic fans seem to prefer its tone to the campy old Stan Lee comics. It's an alt-universe Spiderman and you get modernized versions of Peter's origins and all his villains.

X-Men: Option 1 is the very beginning with Stan Lee. Option 2 is starting where Chris Claremont began writing in the 80s. Option 3 is the modern era, go for Grant Morrison's run from the early 2000s, which is followed by Joss Whedon's run in chronology. Good writers and good stories.

Ok, so now I'm aware that there's a 616 Universe and a Ultimate Universe. I also understand that there intertwine during the Secret Wars. Is it okay to just stick with the Ultimate Universe?

I started with Essential, and branched from there.

I would read 616 and ultimate. A lot of the charm of what happens in the continuity of the ultimate universe is how things twist in imagining out of the picture you have of what might happen from your knowledge of the original Marvel U. For instance how important of a character Gwen Stacy became in Ultimate Spiderman.
