I liked the SEL and Dazumanga ops, but not enough that I watched them more than the first time and then another for the last episode to prolong the experience a bit.

I hate when OPs have shitty overly technical or just plain uncomfortable/oversaturated piano/violin j-rock excessiveness, at least that makes OPs like Mushishi or JoJo (for contrast) stand out. A good OP is not one that is "wow so epic" but just plain catchy or tone setting. I've never found another anime with a theme like Mushishi. But the ones that always stay with me are bangers like Ushio and Tora first OP or something like GTO. Cromartie High Space Dandy, Cowboy Bebop etc. Just good fuckin songs for good shows. You can tell there was care in the selection of the track. When a track is just generically "epic" it's usually a good inidicator of what the show is gonna be like.

So in my mind the Super Robot shows or 80s anime had the best music. The 70s gave intros entire brass sections and the 80s gave intros a pop sensibility. All Urusei Yatsura & Ranma 1/2 OP/EDs are instant classics.

It's fairly formulaic as most episodes end with a giant robot battle but the drama works well with a few Holy Fuck moments popping up. The first episode is an avalanche of exposition. Give the show a little longer to see if it suits you.
