What's a good series or film similar to Witch Hunter Robin wrt the occult themes woven into the plot? In WHR the witch cult hypothesis is a fairly large part of the historical background of the story. This, combined with the series taking itself seriously and not really being comedic gave it a unique and imo appealing tone

Not sure if it will be similar but my fav supernatural themed anime is for sure Mushi-Shi

Darker than Black is another amazing series I haven't thought about in a long time, the first season is better I think, but the second is worth a watch if u liked the first, even if the first is a little tough to find now.

The persona series is another unique supernatural kinda themed show that is more about character development than supernatural stuff tho.

I know there r others but they aren't coming to mind right now, I may come back after checking out this WHR u mentioned with some other suggestions.

I liked Darker Than Black until it got to the detective plot (second season?), and then it felt like the series stopped taking itself seriously

97 anime is the only good adaptation. Manga is a masterpiece. RIP

Evangelion
Based on Christianity's Old Testament specifically the Book of Revelations which details the final fight between Heaven & Hell aka ARMAGEDDON.

watch Ergo Proxy, which is by the same creator as Robin.
Much of it is a loose, personal interpretation of Gnosticism, which is a mixture of Greek philosophy with Orphic and Jewish mythology. The protagonist very much follows the pattern of a Gnostic Hero, who is not out for fame or power but first and foremost on a quest to find out the truth about himself and the nature of reality itself. The Hypostasis of the Archons is a good place to start reading on Gnosticism if you're unfamiliar with it.
Being familar with the meaning of Descarte's "cogito, ergo sum" also helps.

The plot moves very quickly in the beginning of the show, to the point of being confusing. After episode 10 or so the plot slows to a crawl and instead the psyche of the main characters and the world they live in is explored.

Some people call it pretentious because the first few episodes namedrop a lot of concepts and figures from Western philosophy without really doing anything with them, but that's so you can read up on those ideas and people early on and enjoy the rest of the show.

I remember watching this show as a kid. I've seen the show a few times. I always felt disappointed by the ending, finding it unfulling maybe because I was a stupid kid. I didn't understand the deep philosophical meaning. I just found the main charter to be seductive and attractive. The would and characters were interesting
