How important is stretching to keeping /fit/?

Very! I started stretching every morning for 15 minutes about a month ago, and I feel so much better all around. Better mood, less aches etc.

Also, ever since I started stretching I built a pretty decent mind muscle connection. For example, for the first time in my two years of lifting I can feel my lat working.

stretching is pretty important for muscles but critical for joint health especially as you age. look at the old 80+ year old masters doing tai chi or chi gong, doing the splits and shit. most people stop moving their joints thru their full range as they age and they stiffen. keep your ligaments pliable by moving them regularly

What kind of stretches would you recommend to someone just starting a routine?

Absolutely essential. Impaired range of motion means you are, by definition, not fit.

World's Greatest Stretch and Bretzel are the ones I do every day. They'll hit nearly everything and you can fill in the other stretches you need.

I also do pec stretches the day after chest day-- lay on a foam roller and keep your head, shoulders and tailbone in contact with it; then put your arms out at 90 degrees and try to get your elbows to touch the ground. If you can do that easily, try to get your hands/wrists to touch the ground. I've always had extremely tense pec muscles and it's this and soft tissue work that's opened them up.

Static stretching before lifting isn't as good as dynamic stretching and activation-- you want to prep your muscles for the specific movement.
