I have been sooo close to a six pack like three times but have always let circumstances get out of control and ended up in a bad place.
I'm now 260 lbs and want to be at least 220 lbs to achieve this (i am a big guy)

OK so
beyond simple calorie reduction, cardio, and of course, copious amounts of lifting, what else can I do?

Two things come in mind as of particular interest, the first being carb cycling, the second being psychological tactics that I can use to motivate myself when I feel like it's not achievable.

Protein, enough sleep, I'm not sure about carb cycling in particular as much as making the calories be good shit.

40 pounds will take a few months. Especially as a bigger guy you can probably get away with a slightly bigger deficit and burn more energy day to day. 6 packs are mostly down to body fat percentage though. Make sure you're exercising your abs and shit and they won't shrink as your mass does and lose weight and that's actually it. The rest is just getting it done that much quicker.

Also as far as tactics go remember if you have a bad day that it's better to get back on the horse sooner rather than "oh well I'm done for now" and putting 30 pounds on before stopping. If you can't resist snacking don't keep shit that you're not planning on eating around the house. If it's easy to graze on that goes double. If it requires prep to be edible then you can't graze. Positive thinking is key to maintaining a regimen. When you do well feel good about it, when you fuck up focus on getting back on the horse and ways to reduce the chance of that happening again.

If you go to the gym or workout you can actually use the BWG thread. Ignore the guy who keeps posting what he's never going to do and just post when you work out. If you start a routine and stick to it we'll actually cheer you on.

Roids? You're saying the girl in that pic uses roids? In what way? That's a totally normal physique for someone of a healthy BMI, and the lack of muscular bulge begets hefty exercise.

None of these girls do roids but you can still use stimulants and supps to burn things out faster

Pull up par calisthenics. If you look into the calisthenics world you will see some very powerful abdominals.

Thats how I got these Diamonds on my tummy.
(Not a picture of me but it is a nice picture)

Calisthenics are also very fun.

You know I haven't been doing as many pullups as I should but I feel ya. There's a place nearby outside that's really easy for'em so I think I'll just wait till a quiet time and bang out as many reps as I can.

You don't need powerful abdominals to have a six pack. Just a low body fat and some muscle. Don't get me wrong I've definitely noticed a change there since I started doing core exercises once a week but those muscles are always there and it doesn't take much fat to fill the gaps in between them. If you're in single figure body fat they're showing or almost there.

Calisthenics are cool though. There's no weight more real than your own body. I am still short of a muscle up though. Need to focus on my pull up form more I guess.

I wanted to come back and also suggest that you might want to incorporate stretching too. Like a "morning stretch" after sit ups or any other chest and stomach based stretch. It'll help them feel and look better if they aren't tight and bound up.

Oh yes, now that you mention it I got some refreshers on yoga and I usually do a short routine following a youtube video. On top of that I also just do random stretching myself, it helps a lot. You're right on.
