I know you lower 48ers are thinking like "oh, big deal".

But I don't see how people can hunt these things. You'd have to have no soul.

I once saw a decapitated deer on a street in hickville swamps, VA (hometown visiting).

Then I saw a bunch of deer, IN DAYLIGHT eating on the side of the highway.

Occasonally, you can see them in Hollywood. I wouldn't shoot them because I like fish but yeah, damn, other than eating people's weed and crops, deers are alright.

Oh I can imagine how people hunt deer. Why people hunt deer. Because deers have evolved to be hunted. If no animal hunts deer, they just start starving.

You can go visit natural reserves here in the Netherlands, during winter. Watching deer die of hunger because they have no natural predators here in the Netherlands. The strong deer eat all the plants during winter, and the weak deer are just pushed out of the herd to die of hunger.

They should introduce some wolves in natural reserves or some shit.

They're everywhere where I live, and they're a nuisance to farms. The amount of deer that is allowed to hunt is population control, and it's as good for the herd as it is for the people.
In my mind, you're just a giant pussy if you can't kill something majestic and eat it.

My dad never hunted.
I went hunting with a friend for the first time in my teens, and it was great to get in touch with nature and the primal nature of man.
Becoming civilized will never negate our primal nature.
Plus, venison is fucking delicious.

It's actually really sad when you think about it. That we humans have to cull deer, because we killed off all the bears and wolves. And lions. Did you guys knew lions used to live all the way up to South-Europe? The Romans made the European, North-African and Middle-Eastern lions extinct.

I live in Virginia, op, and deer are a fucking menace. We killed off all the wildcats and wolves in colonial times so there's not much that controls the population except based coyotes moving from the west and cougars seem to be coming back . They strip woods bare so none of them have enough to eat, they're all bones and mange and chronic wasting disease.

You get to see moose, though I've heard moose are pretty dangerous.

>live in suburban s FL
>never see deer

>go to rural WA
>deer are nearly domesticated by the people I live with, pet them and feed them (pic related)
>at night, their eyes glow HORRIBLY when you shine your headlamp on them, spooky like the Beast in Over the Garden Wall
>see a male with antlers at night in this manner

surely this is why they were so respected and revered by the pagans, like forest spirits

as for hunting...well...I believe it's sort of moot in that I think it would be ideal to not have the habitat destruction and domesticated livestock. but still, I see them bounding, and I think, they are in a similar niche to the gazelle. it's not unnatural per se to have an apex predator that keeps them in check. but it's all about a certain sportingness and having to prove oneself physically superior to the deer.

They are everywhere where I live, fucking stupid animals. Constantly jumping in front of cars, or standing in the middle of the road when there are cars zooming all around them.

They are cute animals, and in some aspects I really like them, but majestic is a poor word to describe them.

I don't know, that's pretty weird and idealistic. Humans were grouping up on animals and using tools long before ranged weapons. I'm sure there are some cultures where that happens as a rite of passage but I doubt that's every hunt.

live around deer and you see the problem. there's too fucking many of them they're unrestricted so they're everywhere and often in the worst places imagineable, they're extremely stupid and will stand motionless no matter how loud you beep the horn or rev the engine or flash the lights. they'll fuck up your gardens and if you spook 'em while they're in your yard they'll run into goddamn everything.
and then there's shit and rabies and bucks in the spring that suddenly have to act macho and tough in a world that vehicles and sweet old ladies walking in the park exist.
oh and the rabies the goddamn rabies it's hilarious watching deer act drunk and stupid and desperate and scared as they slowly dehydrate to death and makes for a good youtube video but look at all the goddamn rabies and lyme disease that they just casually spread around.

i mean they're adorable and majestic sure no question. they're absolutely retarded and a plague when their population gets outta hand though.

These are related to elephants and sea cows. Elephants used to be semi-aquatic like humans (which is why we lack as much hair as other apes). Sea cows are still aquatic. Out of the paenungulata clade, they're the only ones that didn't go underwater.

I don't think you should decide if you can kill something if you've never tasted it. Deer provide venison, rabbits provide good meat, hell I don't understand why the bible thinks fish isn't meat, short of some necessary scarcity diet back then that is no longer relevant.

the bible rules are different.
Deer has cloven hoof and chews it's cud, so that's okay like cows, sheep, goat.
Fish have to have both scales and gills to be good to eat.
And of course "dont boil the calf in its mothers milk"

WAfag here, see these magnificent motherfuckers all the time but it never loses its chrarm

a few months ago I was taking the garbage to the curb, walking backwards, go past a fence then turn around and BAM there's this hugeass buck like 5-10 feet away.
I was a little nervous cuz he could prob wreck my shit if he wanted, but he was also calm and majestic AF. I stopped and tried making smalltalk with him for a bit but he was probably stoned on deer-weed or had Asbuckers Syndoe, refused to talk and basically just ignored me. after a minute or he casually started to mosey on foreward, I said good-night but he stayed quiet, which I think was a little rude, but maybe he was having a bad trip, had social problems, or something.

Hunting for "sport" is despicable and unimpressive. REALLY unimpressive. Wow, you managed to sneak up on an animal that posed no threat to you and contracted a single finger? They're incredibly stupid and delicious. Moose fit the word "majestic" a lot better, although they're still not that bright.

They're straight-up fucking megafauna and move with the kind of quiet intensity you'd expect from a carnivorous predator like a wolf or a tiger.

The last time I saw a deer she was about 10 feet away from me chewing on part of a wooden sculpture, I was not expecting to find a deer in this particular location a wedge shaped nature reserve that runs from almost the city centre all the way out of town but only in a slice about 1-2 miles wide, at this point we were maybe 100 metres maybe less from the main buildings for the nearby university and almost walked into her before I saw her, I was listening to music. It was not a subtle approach. She fled into the bush about 20 feet where I could still clearly see the dumb bint. After another 20 seconds she realised I could still see her and despite my complete lack of movement she fled further this time out of sight.

She was a beautiful animal but fucking hell she was stupid. You'd think a prey animal would be good at this shit.

Harmless and innocent is not majestic. Majestic requires majesty, ownership of the scene, poise, grace, she had a bit of the last one I'll give her that. Given the state of deer ticks she's really only marginally harmless as well.
