If a cataclysm strikes Earth and Humans are gone, ants and roaches are almost guaranteed to still be around. Who then do you think is best suited to dominion of the Earth, ants or cockroaches?

Without human's providing warmth cockroaches will not survive anywhere outside the tropics fool

ants. ants are already the most successful species at least for the time being. they just live on a smaller scale. there's something like 1 billion ants for every human on earth.

Okay but this is a question of which will find their way to technology and science and global dominance. The obvious answer is chimpanzees. If it's a non-ape mammal I'm still unsure about dolphins - it might be dogs. If it isn't a mammal my money's on crows.

Dogs have got the strategic advantage. They even work well in packs. They'll gang up on the remains of whatevers left and just tear it to pieces. As humanity vacates the planet? Dogs turn back to wolves. Well not directly, but their role.

Wild dogs would be able to kill anything that stood in their way. They can turn on lots of other animals. Dogs shall inherent the earth.

That's a fine line of reasoning, but I offer you this: How do dogs and wolves deal with fleas and lice in nature? Do they at all?

Fleas, heartworms and lice shall inherit the doge.

The weight of all ants on Earth is greater than the weight of all humans.

Ants > cockroaches any day. Several hundred species of ants practice large scale, sustainable agriculture. They just seem so, so much more organized than cockroaches.

Pretty sure that if mankind goes extinct, and the Earth produces another intelligent species, that species will be birds.

Birds have more brapimpls in their brains for each cm3 than mammals (because they gotta be lightweight to fly).

i think the real question here is; if there are a million ants for each human could a human (on average) kill one million ants before being killed by the ants.

If they are army ants/siafu, without a weapon you might be fucked. If they are carpenter ants you'll be okay as long as you're not Pinocchio. If they are fire ants it's probably helpful that they're already on fire - again, unless you're Pinocchio. Fuck that guy.

Pic related.

Ants are also nature's autists and if they ever become an actual threat to the dominant species of the earth, and if that species has a modicum of intelligence, they can endlessly exploit the ants' pheromone-based chain of command.

Ants totally > roaches because roaches are basically opportunists, and where there is no opportunity they cannot thrive. But ants probably don't > birds like birdbro Ebenezar asserts.

All the while based cephalopods, nature's most true constant, lurk beneath the depths until the surface world is clear for them to conquer it...

I don't know about the next extinction, but the final extinction will end in space-faring earth octos.
