I like to stay up to date by reading news that is mostly unrelated to (american) politics.
It's always the same shit with American politics. Some guy said stupid, possibly extremely ignorant shit. People get indignant. Ignorant stupid guy continues to have a successful career in politics. If he says something extremely stupid crossing a terrible line, then he gets a job in some field that he earned by giving concessions or government contracts. It's all the same shit on repeat.

I just like to stay up to date with the fucked up shit America, China dn Russia is doing.

This was an interesting read on FBI tactics.

About to become an English teacher. Considering moving 20,000km away from where I live. Unsure what to do about this 2 and a half year relationship I'm in with a woman 12 years older than me. I love her to bits but I don't know what's going to happen if I move to the literal other side of the world.

That aside I've been playing violin, living in a squat, playing EUIV and smoking weed as much as possible.

You've seen the webms of elevators locking people between the doors and going up.
There's a story you can look up where a woman with mental problems was locked in side an elevator over holidays when the crew working the building shut it down and called it holiday without any safety procedures like... making sure the elevators aren't occupied when you shut down for 7 days+.
She died and the inside was grusome, clawmarks all over and broken bleeding fingers.

Winnipeg was the fastest growing and richest boomtown in North America because it was at the center of all the rail lines, people thought it was going to be the next Chicago or St Louis but then the Panama Canal opened and now its Winnipeg, we still have a world class ballet though I guess

actually the city was built by masonic agents of british imperialism as the north american locus of the blood curse that keeps the british royal family in power using louis riel's blood sacrifice as consecrating agent, the ballet came along as a sort of faustian buy one get one free

On August 17, 2016, he found a GPS device on his girlfriend’s Toyota Camry and filmed himself removing it. A week later, he found another GPS device on his BMW. He also found electrical outlets in his house that he says were replaced with ones that looked identical but seemed to have listening equipment on the inside. He took pictures of those too."

Gonna see if I can make this post but if I can I'll follow it up with another one and a proper description.

Just has a heads up, I've only been here 2 weeks but I've made friends who have been here for 3 years and they absolutely love it here. Moved to China like. 3 weeks ago. Loving it so far but shit is tough.

Basically it all came out of absolutely nowhere. A family friend is moving to Japan to teach English and I thought that sounded like a neat break, so I messaged one of my old friends from Uni who had moved to China to teach English and a few days after that he was like "Hey man, there's a job here if you want one?" It's in a private boarding school where the parents are paying RIDICULOUS amounts of money to send their kids there. Ridiculous in £'s and $'s terms let alone in the Chinese currency. That takes the pang of privilege off it slightly, because these are SUPER rich kids. One of them got dropped off in a fucking Lamborghini.

Teaching English is fucking HARD to hit the ground running with. I know I'll be good at it eventually but when you've never worked with 10 year olds in your life, suddenly being put in command of 45 of them is fucking overwhelming. I've to teach 4 classes a day, 45 minutes each. Sounds easy, right? Well I'm sure it is after a certain point but right now I'm pretty much spending every available moment before lessons preparing powerpoints. 1 of the classes are the grade 2's, they are like 6-7 years old generally and legit I can't get over how adorable they are. Like seriously, I've never been much of a kid person and I'm also not one of these people that fawns over animals but they are just SO ADORABLE. They get to pick their own English names and there's this girl called "Sunflower" and when I asked what her name was she was just like "sanfwawa" and even just thinking about it now is making me smile. So cute. That class is by far the easiest. Just play pictionary/hangman/I spy with them and make it somewhat relevant to the words they are studying and that's that. It also helps that the classes only have 13 kids in them.

The other 3 I teach are divided between 2 classes. One class I teach twice a day, the other class is split with another teacher so I only teach them once. They are both grade 4 (so like 10-11) and I need to build 2 powerpoints a day to do the lessons. The class I teach twice has some great kids in it but the class I teach only once I'm really struggling with. There's support in that the Chinese teachers walk by and stare into the class and everyone falls silent. Their pay gets docked if the kids fail English tests and while we can shout at the kids and stuff it's pretty inefficient discipline when you don't speak the same language.

Anyway, so far life in China is strange. I've no doubt that there's literally millions of people here having an awful time...But I gotta tell you guys, to be here as a white guy now, things are pretty fucking sweet. It's difficult to explain, but I feel much more "free" here than I ever did in the UK. Within 2 weeks I'd gotten myself an electric scooter and you can just hop on that shit and go. Buy a beer for like 60 pence, WeChat (the best app in China) a dude who comes and delivers weed to your door. Get a massage for about £10. Then go out and eat like a king for under £5. It's just a really nice vibe here.

The other thing that's hard to explain is the sense of development you see. There's SO MANY pregnant woman and mothers, but it doesn't even end there. Everywhere around me there's shops getting renovated and apartment complexes being built. You can't go anywhere without seeing some kind of construction or building work happening. Most of the expats I've made friends with are all English teachers, but the ones that aren't are pretty much ALL entrepreneurs and business owners. You just get a sense that shit is happening here. Like, the numbers in china regarding the development of a middle class are fucking show stopping. I went from a place where things seemed to be getting worse and worse and am now in a place where things seem to be getting better and better.

Don't get me wrong, as I said before I know there's people here who are having an awful time. And there's so much shit that I hate, but generally I really really like this place and think I'll spend the next couple of years here at least.

Good you're having fun, personally I have some moral qualms about contributing economically with spending and taxes to a 1 party dictatorship that de facto runs on slave labor, imprisons artists, has hardly heard of animal rights and is aggressively expanding into international waters but enjoy those £10 massages bro.

Oh it's such a rich culture!

In 2008, more than 40 animal activists in Beijing gathered to protest skinning and cooking live cats in Guangdong province.[9] A 2010 article featuring content from Tiexue and Mop news sources showed pictures of skinned cats being submerged in boiling water.[10]

The 2010 documentary San Hua by Guo Ke is the first to depict China's cat-meat industry. In one scene, Guo and fellow activists stop a transport truck and find "more than 300 cats crammed into cramped wooden cages, unable to move"—some missing tails and others "crushed into unconsciousness." In another scene at Fa's Cat Restaurant, Guo used a hidden camera to film cooks beating cats with a wooden stick, dumping them into a fur-removal machine, and then boiling them.

In some areas, dogs are beaten to death in order to release blood into the meat.

Yin Yang fish involves deep-frying fish while it is still alive. The practice has been condemned by animal-rights activists. Many chefs in Taiwan are no longer willing to prepare it, but it is popular in mainland China.

China farms about 10,000 Asiatic black bears for bile production—an industry worth roughly $1.6 billion per year.[1] The bears are permanently kept in cages, and bile is extracted from cuts in their stomachs.[1] In Jan. 2013, Animals Asia Foundation rescued six bile bears, which had broken and rotted teeth due to gnawing at their cages.[16]

China is the biggest fur-producing nation.[1] Some fur animals are skinned alive, and others may be beaten to death with sticks.[1]

In Nov. 2013, PETA released a video of a live angora rabbit in northeastern China having its fur torn off. The video received 200,000 views on China's video site Youku within a month and prompted UK retailers like Primark and Topshop to stop imports from China of products using angora wool.

Live-animal key rings

In Beijing, vendors sell fish, turtles, and amphibians as key rings and mobile-phone decorations. Animal-rights activists condemn the practice because the animals may run out of air and die quickly, and they may also pose hazards to human health.

A 2011 survey of about 6000 Chinese found that while about 2/3 of respondents had never previously heard of "animal welfare"...

Tsinghua University professor Zhao Nanyuan argues that animal rights represents a form of Western imperialism ("foreign trash") that is "anti-humanity". He argues that animals are not sentient and therefore don't have rights. He encourages China to learn from the example of South Koreans who refused Western protests of its dog-meat traditions.[34]

Critics have pointed out that while non-human animals are not as advanced in their needs and desires as humans, they do share some basic needs, such as food, water, shelter and companionship.

Some claim that it is contradictory for the U.S. to condemn China's mistreatment of animals while engaging in its own forms of animal cruelty. Chinese animal-welfare groups censured an American-style rodeo, as well as Jackie Chan's support for it. One Chinese commenter said of Chan: "You made a video about the protection of bears, and now you're promoting the mistreatment of cattle, it's a massive contradiction. Brother Chan, you've hurt me deeply."

>How ethnically diverse is the city you're in?
Somewhat. We've very close to Hong Kong so it's not as if we're in the far reaches of China where it's proper rare to see a Westerner.
>What's the crime like? you get robbed at night?
I already covered this in another post. Feels very very safe here. The most reference I have is the natives who have grown up here and my expat friends who have been here for 3 years. Both of them tell me it's very safe and crime is rare. This was one of my biggest concerns before I came but really you just get the impression it's a very safe place.
>Africans or muslims lurking in the alleys?
There's a muslim restaurant which does pretty good food and I'm pretty sure I'm friends with the only black person (a Kenyan) in the entire city.
>Kind of strange if they're literally millionaire's kids at a high end school.
I guess this is where "it's china" comes into it. There's a lot of technicalities.
My visa, for example. I am here on "business" because there's lawyers fees and stuff that go into working visas and stuff. On my visa I'm only allowed to stay in china for a maximum of 90 days. How do you get around that? Simple. Go to Hong Kong, walk through boarder control, then walk out. There you go. Do that once every 89 days and voila you're within the terms of your visa conditions and everyone is happy.
Same goes with how I ended up teaching in a school like the one I do. We teach a Cambridge certified course and I've got a university degree from the UK .You can word that to make it sound considerably more sexy than I have and put that I was sourced from one of the leading teachers agencies in the whole of china and it actually doesn't look nearly as chaotic as the truth. China seems to get by on bullshit little technicalities like this. It's just how things happen.
>Did you train to be a teacher before or did they hire you just because you're a native?
I had zero experience or training and got hired simply because I was available. Watched 2 days worth of classes and had a couple of 1 to 1 sessions with the more experienced teachers. I sent the right message at the right time to my friend. It just so happened 2 interns left after their first day (they were a couple and the guys gran died back in the UK and his single parent mum wasn't handling her son moving away and her mum dying so well, they might be back but essentially me and my flatmate were brought in last minute just because we were available). My pay is 8000 a month. Around about £1000 I think. I don't pay rent or utilities and they paid for my visa fees and travel expenses.

We're both on the internet, and just in the same way you don't need to believe a word I say, I don't think for one second that the reason you aren't here is because of moral hang ups. The legacy of the British Empire isn't anything to feel proud about either but it's not as if I immediately stopped paying taxes out of disgust of the Bengali famine or oppression of Arab nationalists in Israel.

I'm not comfortable with the way animals are treated here. But y'know what? I'm not comfortable with the way animals are treated in the UK either. I still ate meat in both countries and I'm still going to continue to do so. As a side note, 1 person I've spoken to so far has eaten dog meat, and we're in canton, where dog and cat meat is supposed to be the cuisine. From talking to my Chinese friend she said it was all very hush hush and done under the counter in shady restaurants. Of all stereotypes people I spoke to had of china this seems to be the least accurate. Maybe there's some places you go and there's fuckloads of it but I haven't heard of or seen it anywhere.

>Some claim that it is contradictory for the U.S. to condemn China's mistreatment of animals while engaging in its own forms of animal cruelty. Chinese animal-welfare groups censured an American-style rodeo, as well as Jackie Chan's support for it. Did you forget to delete that from your copy paste? This is the exact point I'm trying to make.

And yeah, it really is a rich culture. Isolating animal welfare and the cuisine as reasons to write off an entire culture just seems reductive. These are absolutely 100% issues and I agree with you completely that it's fucked up. But to blanket The most populated country on the planet because of some stuff you've read on the internet is just ridiculous.

You're not really living up to your name right now, Caroline, I've made a lot of points here.
>It's not exactly skinning and boiling cats alive though is it?
No, and I never said it was or tried to excuse that.
>I also seen it
Excellent. I've also seen that video, I saw it after it got posted here years ago. I'm not going to try and dispute the footage or again, try and excuse what it is. But what you're looking at is a short documentary made by the broadcasting arm of the United States government. They have a interest in making China seem as awful as possible.

There's a book about the PR industry called "toxic sludge is good for you". It's been a while since I read it but there's an interesting chapter about how new Yorks toxic waste got shipped to some town in the south as "fertiliser".
This isn't making me write off the entirety of America or refuse to visit it.

Fair enough if what you've read online is enough to make you eschew an entire country and nation, but I'm telling you right now, as someone who spent SO much time on the future and wikipedia reading about China, I've come here and almost all of the bad shit I expected hasn't been present at all.

can you talk more about handling being an english teacher without real experience?

I'm finished up my MPA after a BS in Poli Sci. I'm maybe 80% likely to finish before I go, and if I don't it means I'm one class away from finishing.

I'll be teaching either in Thailand or Vietnam. My SO spent time getting a grad degree in China among other places. What you said about China is true.

The ONE tip I'll give that hasn't been posted

>Watch out for booze, especially spirits. It's often rebottled grey goose at best, or seriously iso or other alcohol/solvents or other cuts.

When I had to source booze in India, I had to get it from a corner store where ALLLLLLLLL the booze bottle safety cap things had been BROKEN.

I hate that shit. So I'm just saying from that person's experience partying in Shanghai and supposedly visited other places, watch out. If I went I would totally stick to beer until I went to the same place a few times and checked it out.

She was blonde and white, so she always got in free and drank free.

If you're asian looking you can't use your foreigner status nearly anywhere as much. They had a Taiwan national in their cohort and even though he's american as apple pie, he looks Chinese, so they rarely let him in for free or in the VIP upgrades.

Look for these "party coordinator" people. Yeah some are corny but some are great.

Also from personal experience, watch out for Drugs in the 3rd world. It's not really worth it. As an American who can cop locally and who can utilize the DN, using drugs (especially more than weed) in these countries is insane.

I bought a fuck ton of weed (like well over 100-200g even after tossing out 50g that went bad) for ~$30 and ~$20 was tip and gas. It genuinely was the best in town, but it was seed garbage like 3% THC. As someone who smokes/vapes medical, even that 2 week t break didn't help. I smoked like 5-8 joints and pretty much gave up.

I'm considering bringing an edit with medical-made e-cig oil and hiding it with other real e-cig oil. The penalties are crazy though for real. I also chip other drugs and apart from trekking out into an opium village maybe once where I don't get to take any home, I won't use opis. Benzos are already OTC, and I shouldn't be fucked up if I'm teaching kids.

guilty of what? lol. You obviously didn't read and are just trying to be a contrarian.

If he actually had been in contact with ISIS they would have known and he would have been brought down hard. All that they were able to manufacture was selling counterfeit BMW logos lol.

Legit I was kinda looking forward to the whole "asian people asking you for photos" shit but it hasn't happened once outside of clubbing. No one would bat an eyelid in Hong Kong but elsewhere you would probably get people asking.

As the other guy said, you do get a lot of children pointing or saying Hello. That hasn't gotten old yet, just walking down the street and wee kids just say "hello!", it's quite sweet.

Why don't you like, not get herpes? Do you have a choice in the matter? You make it sound as if it's up in the air. I take it you ate some strange strange. Unacceptable.

JK it's cool.
