20%, but a minimum of 5 USD.

I'd just rather give some asshole too much of a gratuity than break out a calculator or wonder about the quality of my food the next time I'm there. Being a generous tipper gets you very little in the way of service except peace of mind, but that's enough for me.

Yes I tip. Proportionally to what I am buying. I’ll tip a couple dollars for ten in drinks. 5 to fifteen for a meal, depending what it is/ how much. etc...

Reason I tip is because its based. Rest of you who do not tip are forgettable.
Going out to town for any reason is frivilous by nature, so why wring up your face over a few extra dollars? The benefit is that you’re “that dude” who does not have to kiss ass or say anything to let someone else know you appreciate them. Just tip. And sure enough I go back to the same restaurants or bars and receive better, more humane treatment.

At a restaurant? 15-20%, depending on how much the bill is and how much that comes out as the tip.
At a salon/barber? 20-25% since I usually get most of my hair cut off and don't come back for months (I do monthly trimming/cleanup myself).
Pizza/food delivery? $3 or $4 flat.

I try my best not to tip, and Its the reason why i never go to restaurants, use taxis, or order pizza. It actually made me into a better cook.
I'll gladly tip my bartender, but only when she knows not to talk to me while im reading Hentai on my Smartphone. Took a while to get there, but now all i have to do is glance at her and she'll get me another pint. I always end up having a shit time whenever she's not there.

I don't see the point in eating at places that would require tipping. Food is overpriced. Last place I went to was IHOP — for $8 I got a stack of 3 pancakes. Un-fucking-believable. You know. And it's like this everywhere... A $30 steak dinner, fuck that, I will go to the store and buy/cook my own stake. These places really only fulfill social purpose... Easy, quick dining for a party of people. Fortunately don't find myself in many "business meetings" and my friends enjoy cooking.

But ignoring that... It's state law that Denny's waitresses be paid minimuim wage, just like the fucking McDonalds grillperson. So, why am I giving her a tip, but not McDonalds grill boy? In fact, McDonalds grill boy worked much harder than her. What did she do? She took my order... She carried out a plate of food... Then she harrassed me every 5 minutes asking if everything was okay and if I needed anything, which I never did. Somehow all that entitles the high to 15% of my bill? How much is that? $1.20? And some people will pay as high as 50% of fhe bill, and give the bitch $4? For carrying plates, writing on a notepad, and annoying me?

Look, my point is that I stopped tipping even when I find myself in these situations. Fuck them, they don't deserve a tip, they're already getting paid. And I agree they should get paid more, but that shouldn't be coming out of my pocket, whoever owns IHOP should sell a fucking yacht and give the girl the dollar I've "neglected" to give her.

And all you fucking idiots who tip are just perpetuating this madness. It needs to end and the only way it ends is if you stop playing. The bitch can't spit in your food after the fact, just don't become a regular.

No I'm not lying, I swear on all that is special and holy. Pic related, I save my receipts dude. The stack of 3 pancakes was $7.60.

Lol, that's fucked up. Tbh, I worked at IHOP for a while and I wouldn't put it past them to do that. I bet the manager was telling waiters that they have to do that with low orders to bring up the bottom line. Pretty much every IHOP is constantly struggling and the only reason they survive are because of drunk people coming in late at night and old people coming after church. The waiter themselves would never want to do that because when the customer gets the check and it's more than they thought, they're always the ones that end up taking the hit. But yeah, fuck IHOP. Their food is alright sometimes, but Denny's is far superior.

It kind of depends. At a restaurant where there's some kind of actual wait staff, pretty much no less than $5, and generally about 20% to 25% if the tab comes to more than that. Unless the service was really shitty, but oddly enough that almost never happens to me. Usually it's something around that when I get food someplace without wait staff.

If it's at a coffee shop or something, it depends on how big a party I'm buying for and how weird their orders are (because somehow I'm the most functional member of any of my friends-groups and invariably wind up getting the tab there, too). Again, I rarely get shitty service, other than one occasion where the barista clearly felt that it was a personal affront that I was summoning him away from his computer.

I think to some extent, it's to make up for the fact that my father is a horrendous cheapskate. I actually do think that employees should be paid a reasonable formal wage from the outset and tipping done away with, but that isn't the world we, y'know, live in, and the people who refuse to tip because they're butthurt that their utopian vision doesn't match actual reality are just colossal assholes.

I usually tip 25-45% for good service. Once every five or ten years I won't leave a tip at some place where the service is offensively bad. Restaurants that I go to somewhat regularly love me, and often bring out extra things for me, like special appetizers, menu items, or ingredients (like hot peppers).

Living in China and tipping here is considered very dishonourable. I guess maybe tied to communism and the dangers of being seen accepting a bribe but mostly it seems to do with them getting the impression that if YOU tip you're doing it because you assume they need it and are lording your power over them.
Don't get me wrong, the Chinese seem to love money WAY more than your average person in the UK, but you absolutely cannot get away with tipping in a Chinese establishment.

Hong Kong seems a little different though. I have actually been charged a service fee one time in mainland China but that was in a hilton where I was paying loads for a single bottle of beer. They added on a service charge, I guess because it's an international brand that's gonna be getting mostly foreigners staying at it.

Other than that, back in the UK it would depend on a bunch of stuff. Usually I'd try to make it to 10% if I feel they deserved it, if not though I wouldn't have a huge issue without paying it. One thing I learned when I worked in the service industry is that woman seem to tip less.

My mother enjoys making waitresses cry, will not tip above 15% without being coerced no matter the quality of service, and has a number of disgusting table habits including balling up chunks of half-chewed food in napkins and leaving them on the table, seat, or floor.

I think it's just confusing when you tip like an American, man. The right way to do it would be actually expressing why you're so grateful that you want to give the a gift and stick that shit in a red envelope or whatever, but that would be super weird to do unless you actually have an ongoing relationship with the person providing you service and they actually did something meriting gratuity (or it's close to Spring Festival maybe).

Exchanging monetary gifts is a big part of the culture and it's meant to be meaningful. Simply overpaying is just gonna weird people out and if you look or sound like a foreigner they'll probably just assume you're retarded and refuse the money.

When I worked at Dunkin Donuts, my manager lied to customers, saying that we made the kinimum wage for tipped servers at the time, $2.50/hr. In reality, we made $7.50/hr, which was 10 cents over the minimum wage at the time, but he wanted the extra tips.

Maybe look into the wages for the various places you eat at before assuming that all servers make peanuts? My old boss ain't the only person who uses people like you.

If you can't afford to tip the person standing between you and your food, just make your own food.

Waiters essentially pay to wait on you if you don't tip. The system ain't right, but it's wrong for you to screw them like that. Also, it's kinda stupid to complain about because if tipping wasn't a thing, the food would just be more expensive so you're paying for it regardless.

It's only Europeans who seem to be incapable of wrapping their minds around different numeric systems.

Or maybe, just maybe any date format is equally valid. They all require the same amount of effort to remember and in the end, they're all interchangeable. M/D/Y is fine. D/M/Y is just groovy. Y/D/M is cool too. The only thing giving any of them value is universal recognition so the smart thing to do is use the the version most easily understood by the people you communicate with most frequently. Any "logic" used to "prove" one is superior to another is ultimately subjective, thus bogus.

And if you do encounter a different format, the worst case scenario is that you need to pause for a beat to figure out what "9/10/11" means.

Seriously though, it's hilarious how serious you Europeans get over this stuff. It's not about precision or logic, it's about saying your variant is superior to our variant and then you use contrived logic to prove your point when in reality, it just makes you look like pedantic dicks. I love how you'll go to such painstaking lengths to prove you're somehow better but in the end, you're still and forever will be exactly the same.

First of all the kitchen gets paid a regular wage and the server gets paid below minimum wage and relies on tips to make up the difference. How do you not know this?

Unless you're going to a fancy restaurant why does the person making the food deserve more money than the person serving it? Most kitchens these days are just mindless assembly lines.

And it's not even about that. It's about knowing they get paid jack shit and rely on tips to make a living. If you're going to support a business that treats people like slaves then at least be a decent fucking human being and tip so the person "prancing around" can afford to eat too.

If tipping wasn't a thing you'd be paying more for your food. You're not paying "extra" by tipping. You're not entitled to shit. They're not your servants.

That means nothing. You're the one who ordered the fucking pizza KNOWING this was the case and that you weren't going to tip. You decided this person should have to provide YOU a service without being compensated fairly. You knowing wasted another persons time to benefit yourself. And you do realize if the company paid them normal wages you'd be forced to pay more for your pizza? So you saved money by taking it from the person who deserved it. You're just as bad as the company.

Should the corporation pay more? Yes. Should employees fucking revolt against the corporations? Yes. Should you take advantage of the fact that people have not all miraculously gotten together and risked their own well-being to start a revolution against their employers?

Oh but pizzaboys are "begging". Clearly THEY'RE the leeches and not the person USING them to save a few bucks.

>hundreds of dollars more at the end of every shift
Hundreds of dollars MORE? Let alone a hundred dollars period... Where the hell are you working? And why didn't you become a server?

I've worked as a cook and server in several locations. What I said was a bit dickish. I just meant that one was never harder than the other. The only time servers made more was when they deliberately undertipped the bussers or there was some kind of event that made the store super busy. And honestly, the servers do deserve more because they have to deal with assholes all day long, carry giant trays, actually be outgoing to earn extra(not just simply BE a server), but that's just my opinion/experience. I'd much rather be a cook/assembly. It's less humiliating.

I don't think one is harder than the other. I just think it pays off slightly more for the server to try harder, while the cook gets the same no matter how hard he works. Neither one makes enough money. Both should be pissed off. If you're jealous of servers your priorities are straight fucked.

And honestly, people who chose to be servers always seemed more outgoing and smarter with their money, while the cooks were always burnouts who spent all their money on video games and weed, took 20 smoke breaks, hated the servers, unwilling to deal with customers etc... Any one of which could have become a server by asking. So it's hard to believe you. Again, just my experience.

And one more thing. I didn't really mean "mindless assembly line". If somebody said that to me in the kitchen I'd want to punch them in the face. It's tough work. It's hot, demanding, fast paced, requires constant attention to detail. I just mean there's not much "cooking" involved. You're not really responsible for the food being "good". It's mostly just following rules and using prepared stuff. You either get it right or you screw up.

But what you said about servers makes me think you worked at a nicer restaurant than I ever did, so we might be from two different worlds here.

Ya'll niggas need to step your game up.
I doubt any servers made more than that today, Friday will be a different story. But then again if you're getting buttmad about someone making more money than you you might as well enjoy your life of misery. No one here will ever be Jeff Bezos or Bill Gates, someone will always be doing way less and making way more money than you.

It doesnt matter if people make more money then you but when people make more money then you for less and rub it in your face every day it gets painful. I know a lot of cooks who stopped cooking because of this(and many other reasons). Ones who were much better then I'll ever be.

im on 10 an hour in the kitchen and my ex gets 8 an hour on the floor. I do good, I get to hang back and listen to tunes all day, it's hardly cooking either, just slapping meat down and knowing when to turn it for med/rare/ well done etc. The rest is just dunked into a fryer. Piss easy.

I always tip, and I always over tip. If I'm buying food for X dollars, 20 to 30 percent of that cost is still nothing to me. It isn't really about giving wages or being nice. It's about overtipping because I can and I want people to know I can. I also get excellent service at my frequently visited locations. I have a big dick ergo I tip accordingly.

Don't know about the dick thing, but tipping well is a surefire way to get treated like a king each and every visit.

Basically, if you apply stripper-rules to waiters and waitresses they'll give you the restaurant equivalent of extra private room services.

I tip out of courtesy, try to aim around 15% but sometimes I go up to 20 just because I feel like being generous. This one time a pizza delivery boy tried to be funny and did some weird shit when giving me my pizza, like he was presenting a magical item in a video game, and I almost withheld my tip I was so unimpressed. I just want to give you the little bit of money and then have him give me the pizza and then him fuck off. That's all, man.

In general people underrate the value of random acts of kindness. People like to dish out the shit they receive in their everyday lives, and that's just really sad.

20% unless the server was a serious dick to me for no reason. Food service is literally the worst job in terms of difficulty-to-salary ratio. Fuck working in restaurants. After one month of busting my ass, taking abuse, watching my co-workers make people's orders after handling raw meat without washing their hands, and being forced to work a three-person kitchen by myself while getting screamed at in Spanglish, I put a burger in the face of the manager's power-tripping nepotist shit larvae kid, walked the fuck out, and never ever looked back. I'd rather literally shovel shit for a living.

Tip your servers, it'll make them feel slightly less like they're in fucking hell.

That's because our measurement system is logical and easily calculatable.

Mean while you guys have a whole fuckrollercoaster of 3.435 feet in 1.3yards = 1 furlong

Just admit it, the reason the world uses the metric system is because it is logical and easy.

Typical response from a simple-minded metric user. We understand the imperial system is simply too cumbersome for your ordinary mental capacities to operate on a regular basis.

IMO there seemed to be some kind of refugee crisis around ~2013 here and quality rapidly went downhill. I remember noticing that this place had become so insufferable that I bailed out for several years by 2015. Coming back now, it's better in some ways and worse in others. It's not the 420chins that got me hooked in the first place anymore, though.

I usually tip 40%-60%.

If I go to lunch at my favorite mexican restaurant and my total comes out to $8.49, I'm going to tip AT LEAST five dollars. It's not a matter of tipping big. It's a matter of I live in a first world country and if I'm going to even bother with the complete UTTER waste of money that is going out to eat, then what's another five or six dollars for a tip that will make my waiter's day?

Also, people remember me. They're like, "Hey! That's the guy who tips seven dollars on a ten dollar meal, let's give him the best fucking service in the entire universe!"

The owner/head bartender at my favorite local pub fucking loves me. I don't even go in there often, but I can show up after three months never stopping in and that guy shouts my name out over the crowd first thing when I walk in.

See that's the thing that people who don't tip just don't understand ...

What you're actually paying for when you tip is status as a preferred customer. The more % over the cultural norm that you tip, the more preferred of service you receive in the future.

Which comes in handy a lot. Especially when you go to bars with girls/boypucci that you're in the process of trying to tap that night.
