You're not wrong. Governments will by default resort to atrocious behavior if left alone. Unchecked power and all that.

30 years ago, china mowed down unarmed students with machine guns, used tanks to pulverize their corpses, then hosed the piles of gore down storm drains.

Now they're on TV telling people "oh well they deserved it, they had it coming"

>SUMMARY DURING A RECENT MEETING, A LATIN AMERICAN DIPLOMAT AND HIS WIFE PROVIDED POLOFF AN ACCOUNT OF THEIR MOVEMENTS ON JUNE 3-4 AND THEIR EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT OF EVENTS AT TIANANMEN SQUARE. ALTHOUGH THEIR ACCOUNT GENERALLY FOLLOWS THOSE PREVIOUSLY REPORTED, THEIR UNIQUE EXPERIENCES PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INSIGHT AND CORROBORATION OF EVENTS IN THE SQUARE. THEY WERE ABLE TO ENTER AND LEAVE THE SQUARE SEVERAL TIMES AND WERE NOT HARASSED BY TROOPS. REMAINING WITH STUDENTS BY THE MONUMENT TO THE PEOPLE'S HEROES UNTIL THE FINAL WITHDRAWAL, THE DIPLOMAT SAID THERE WERE NO MASS SHOOTINGS OF STUDENTS IN THE SQUARE OR AT THE MONUMENT. END SUMMARY.

>6. THE GALLOS POSITIONED THEMSELVES NEAR THE RED CROSS STATION AT THE FOOT OF THE STEPS TO THE MUSEUM. INITIALLY NOT MUCH WAS HAPPENING IN THE SQUARE AS MOST OF THE FIGHTING WAS TAKING PLACE TO THE WEST. BODIES AND WOUNDED, HOWEVER, BEGAN TO ARRIVE AT THE RED CROSS STATION INDICATING THE EXTENT OF THE FIGHTING AND THE FACT THAT REAL BULLETS WERE BEING USED. AS THE MILITARY BEGAN TO REACH THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE SQUARE AND SHOTS WERE FIRED IN THE VICINITY OF THE RED CROSS STATION, MRS. GALLO DECIDED SHE WANTED TO LEAVE. THE GALLOS MADE THEIR WAY BACK TO THEIR CAR AND DROVE BACK TO THEIR APARTMENT IN SANLITUN. GALLO DROPPED OFF HIS WIFE AND DROVE BACK TO THE SQUARE, AGAIN PARKING EAST OF THE MUSEUM.

There were clashes, sure. The American government and its partners in the media have exaggerated the extent of the violence, however, and obscured the fact that the protesters were by and large socialists, many of them carrying portraits of Mao, who were reacting to economic liberalization imposed by Deng, Amerika's boy who opened up Chinese labor markets to hyperexploitation by foreign (and domestic) capital.

No I don't think it's supposed to impress you or ingratiate you to the revisionist leadership of the Chinese Communist Party. I think it's supposed to provide context to capitalist restoration in China and to the aims of the students and workers at Tienanmen, as well as coverage of it in hostile countries. There are still Marxist students in China getting abducted and re-educated for not adhering to the party line. The media in the United States in and the media of conspirator nations, however, do not contextualize these facts. What occurred in China was internal to the communist movement except on the margins; only the margins were spotlighted by Amerikan journalists.

Doesn't the definition of reactionary depend on who is in power? Are liberals not the current reactionaries in America ? Or anybody that is constantly reacting to the far-right powers that have recently come to be. I don't think the definition is static, it's not the same as it was 10 years ago when reactionaries were evangelicals and Tea Party faggets, X is a changing.

>I don't think the definition is static

Then you don't know what "reactionary" means
Just because a particular group is in power doesn't mean their ideology isn't reactionary. Napoleon III in France, Mussolini in Italy, Trump -- they all took power by appealing to a mythologized past state when everything was supposedly better, then used their power to block/turn back social reforms.

(Though tbh I think American libs in general and the DNC in particular have some pretty reactionary views too -- only instead of fawning over the postwar US hegemony of the 50s they get wet thinking about the End of History and 3rd-way Clintonism of the 90s)

Really great read here about the whole event, goes into background and everything. https://www.socialist.net/from-revolution-to-tiananmen-square-the-birth-of-capitalism-in-china.htm

I think that image in the western conciousness gives the impression that Tiananmen Square was like this "incident"..it was a massive student movement in the 100,000s that occupied the square for weeks.

>As to who did in reality fire that shot, Bruce Cumings, head of the history department at the University of Chicago, gave us the definitive answer in his two-volume The Origins of the Korean War, and The Korean War: A History: the Korean war started during the American occupation of the South, and it was Rhee, with help from his American sponsors, who initiated a series of attacks that well preceded the North Korean offensive of 1950. From 1945-1948, American forces aided Rhee in a killing spree that claimed tens of thousands of victims: the counterinsurgency campaign took a high toll in Kwangju, and on the island of Cheju-do – where as many as 60,000 people were murdered by Rhee’s US-backed forces.

>Rhee’s army and national police were drawn from the ranks of those who had collaborated with the Japanese occupation during World War II, and this was the biggest factor that made civil war inevitable. That the US backed these quislings guaranteed widespread support for the Communist forces led by Kim IL Sung, and provoked the rebellion in the South that was the prelude to open North-South hostilities. Rhee, for his part, was eager to draw in the United States, and the North Koreans, for their part, were just as eager to invoke the principle of "proletarian internationalism" to draw in the Chinese and the Russians.

How about Libya?
https://www.counterpunch.org/2015/10/20/libya-from-africas-wealthiest-democracy-under-gaddafi-to-terrorist-haven-after-us-intervention/
>In 1967 Colonel Gaddafi inherited one of the poorest nations in Africa; by the time he was assassinated, he had transformed Libya into Africa’s richest nation. Prior to the US-led bombing campaign in 2011, Libya had the highest Human Development Index, the lowest infant mortality and the highest life expectancy in all of Africa.

>Today, Libya is a failed state. Western military intervention has caused all of the worst-scenarios: Western embassies have all left, the South of the country has become a haven for ISIS terrorists, and the Northern coast a center of migrant trafficking. Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia have all closed their borders with Libya. This all occurs amidst a backdrop of widespread rape, assassinations and torture that complete the picture of a state that is failed to the bone.

>America’s bombing campaign of 2011 has not only destroyed the infrastructure of Libya’s democracy, America has also actively promoted ISIS terror group leader Abdelhakim Belhadj whose organization is making the establishment of Libyan democracy impossible.

>The fact that the United States has a long and torrid history of backing terrorist groups in North Africa and the Middle East will surprise only those who watch the news and ignore history.

Libya had it coming. You can't just give a population free health care, free education, 0% interest loans, $50,000 to all newly married couples, no national debt, housing as a basic human right, and privatized oil reserves owned by the citizenry, each holding a small financial share, plus all the other vile things he did, without catching the heroic ire of the US.

Not falling for dumb misinformation is not the same as "defending" something.

If someone says that mosquitos shoot lasers at poor children and murdered Jesus, and you say "that sounds dumb I don't believe that", would you be "defending" mosquitos? You can believe something sucks without believing every dumbshit thing you hear about it.

I feel like this meme of "not falling for obvious lies = defending" is some very old, very stale poltard meme.

The media lies through its teeth about the DPRK because it's an official enemy and with official enemies, anything goes. But the lies used to sell Americans on war are public knowledge, they just usually get exposed too late. Most of what gets reported on in the American media about the DPRK comes either from South Korean far right press (Chosun Ilbo - if you ever see them as a source, assume the opposite of what's reported is true) or coached stories and narratives told by defectors accepted with open arms by Western intelligence services, defectors who usually express deep regret for leaving their country as Western intelligence services leave them to rot, isolated in a society they know little about and have no real connections in, once they've outlived their usefulness.

There's no doubt in my mind that human rights violations occur in the DPRK because, yes, governments fucking suck, especially ones without real civilian participation in democracy. Democratic practice in the DPRK is, uh, far from ideal, to say the least. But that's true of America, too, and the US has more people in prison per capita than any of its official enemies.

Not everyone who disagrees with you is some far right dickhead. Some of us, actually, are far left dickheads.

i think we should form councils of workers that govern daily life at the immediate level with higher levels of management performed by immediately revocable delegates. there's no reason to believe that decentralized power is inherently better, feudalism for example was just as bad as capitalism despite being decentralized, if not worse, even though capitalism laid the foundation for greater centralization of decision-making power. what matters is the real process that governs life, and today life is governed by the needs and interests of capital, rather than human life governing itself for itself.

Strawman much? But this does remind me of the Jacobins and their state terror -- carnavelesque terror -- snake eating its own tail -- ensuring the victory of the reaction to the Paris Commune, who betrayed the poor and the pre-anarchists aligned with them. Off with their heads!

A similar comparison has been made to Stalin's reign of judicial slaughter. Few officials of the USSR were safe from death for fulfilling quotas to identify targets of the public for institutions of killing (in the name of). The Bolsheviks, much like the Jacobins, were forces for counter-revolution by authoritarian means, central control by force of arms, and hierarchical decision-making.

etc. etc. and so on and so on

Yeah, cause when I think of right-wing nationalism, I think of wealth disparity, oil wars, Rick Scott unleashing lead into a cities population, wagging the dog in Iran and having a shitty anti-majoritarian that leads to desperately asking russia and foreign countries for election help (on top of the Koch Bros and Sheldon Adelson types). I think of Trump telling completely obvious lies, and his brainwashed cult jumping through mental hoolahoops to defend it (to save his "higher truths"). I think of politicians using any means necesarry to coerce the public into complacently accepting the use of their public treasury and social security retirement savings as a private slush fund for the rich. I think of austerity to the common people to increase profit for multinational corporations. I think of a platform based on pointing the finger at everything considered degenerate and alien.

I feel you. I work for DOW Chemical which is responsible for all sorts of chemical weapons throughout history, mostly as a supplier of precursor. But more specifically I work for Union Carbide, who DOW bought in the early 00’s, and whose Indian subsidiary caused the Bhopal gas leak disaster in 84. I always knew practicing chemistry would either lead me into research (that would probably be co-opted by evil people), or just working for the evil people directly. Like imagine working at Chernobyl as some 25-yr old fresh out of school pissant and thinking “meh, it’s a job” and then the reactor blows up. I’m just counting the days until the company is responsible for another genocidic incident or disaster of negligence..
