So I mention in front of some friends I like dungeons and dragons.
They start to pester me all the time to teach them to play and dungeon master.
Eventually give in and write campaign, print character sheets, in short put in effort.

Talk about the upcoming game with friends for two weeks, every one is pumped.
Game night only one person shows up.
All the rest text hours after we were supposed to meet saying they can't make it.

I want to murder them.

That's life. People get confused and demented about what year it is. Nowadays, we've moved beyond D&D, you shouldn't expect to play it. Now, that's not saying that nobody can, or that nobody. And that's not saying that it's with D&D that you should have particularly strong apprehensions of this sort. I'm sure there's plenty of people who get all fussy with those around them about them having a physical disc of some sort, just as an extra crude illustrative example.

yeah I love the concept of table-top games but finding a good group is impossble
this is why CRPGs are so prevelant

No, CRPGs are prevelant because they stack together all the addacting entertainment elements, nowadays. They are not that much like pen and paper RPGs, you don't get together on occasionas to play them with friends like stuff from a ginormous selection of split-screen supporting titles. They simply make use of background material that otherwise might have been for pen and paper games.

Get back on that horse and try again. Or try with a new group of friends plus that one guy. I run tabletop games out my own original game i'm planning on publishing on drivethru, some weeks I'll make plans but then one or more people say they cant make it and we reschedule. It really is uncool though that they text you hours after the fact, right. Bring it up to them calmly and say "if you don;t want to, just tell me and let's not beat around the bush. Otherwise, tell me beforehand if you can't make it for some reason. Saves us all alot of trouble". Something like that.

Scheduling is the number one reason D&D campaigns fall apart. That's why jail games are so dope.
>months to years long campaigns
>play 4-6/7 days a weeks
>5 hour sessions, minimum
>everyone at the table is just as interesting as their character
>everybody shows up everyday because they can't do anything else
>everybody is super invested because they need the escape
>everything is borderline broken because nobody can 100% recall all of the rules

That game probably wouldn't have worked in a harder jail or one with a different setup but fuck was it fun while it lasted. After I got out, they kept my character on in the campaign as an /pol/ buzzword of the month and occasionally sent me in-character letters.

Scheduling is the main reason. But a lot of the time it's not their life as much as it becomes a tertiary concern. If you have people who will treat it like a regular social commitment it does well, if they're regular and you have a set day then they do better. What kills campaigns is when people are willing to play but only if nothing else comes up. "Scheduling" killing a campaign usually means a significant number of the players refused to give it the same importance they'd give any other thing they arrange with friends.

Took me a few attempts to put together a campaign of people who could be arsed. I had one guy who is a great guy but he's just generally really good at double booking himself. I've been running the current one almost 3 years and I want to get them to 20 and finish it. They're just starting to get insanely strong now (L13, but they've been leveling fast because I gave them lots of magic and so I throw harder encounters at them).

I've found a few other reliable characters and might try to run something more west marches ie where we can all be players and DMs and where it doesn't fail as long as 3 players and a DM turn up and then run with it. I've got a format that's worked pretty well for it too. It isn't super conductive to epic narratives but it does allow for episodes, long running mini arcs and the general story of the town they belong to. Only drawback is that because it needs to be episodic there isn't as much room to wing it, derail, freeform and shit like that.

If I ever go to jail it'll be soft middle class jail I think so I'll remember. D&D for entertainment. Without having such a time constraint you'd have way more time to RP as well which must be fun.

You're trying to murder the people who wanted to play d&d but then didn't show up. Also you have to wait 3 turns before you can try to murder them again.

He obviously did since he showed up first. I think OPs problem is either having CHA as his dump stat or all his party members are of different alignment (chaotic social/chaotic lazy).

Best solution is still probably to kill them all and have a private tea party with their corpses though. Use them to intimidate your surviving friend into not rolling up his surviving character and going home.

In the game I'm currently playing in, we treat it as a regular social commitment, but we can schedule maybe one game a month. I've been worried about it becoming a tertiary concern as the other players spend so long in between sessions. It seems like that might become a reality, as our monk started bringing his new girlfriend to the games but she's never as invested as anyone else and they're both always bone tired. Seems like they're about to drop out which sucks since he started the group in the first place.

West Marches style games seem pretty cool but I don't know how to efficiently screen for thatguys and I don't have a large enough network to pull solid players from.

Also a word about jail games: you need to be willing to defend your shit. D&D in jail has acquired an unfortunate reputation as being the game of skinners and general weirdos. Kind of paints a target on your back for disrespect which you need to quash. The only reason our game lasted so long was because everybody had already cultivated a decent reputation before the game started and our fighter ran the dorm as well as the crips and hispanics. The RP is fucking fantastic though. Even if people are just playing as themselves, it's still fucking fascinating because they aren't just roleplaying the dickass thief - they ARE the dickass thief. And the players who do actively roleplay get amazingly into it. I think everybody except for the fighter was mostly playing for the roleplay in that game. Our DM was this awesome Irish dude who had been playing since the '70s and all of his characters were so distinct that I can still remember almost all of them.

OP here.
So me and my gf and the one other person who showed up are gonna try and find a different person to fill the group.
I closed the group chat for the game we had and told the people who flaked how shit it was of them to do this.
I was really upset when I made my op, I was being dramatic. Sorry.

Here's hopping the next time works out.

Good luck OP
Also check out local comic/game stores, alot of them host weekly tabletop games of some sort and usually make it fairly easy for new players ro join up. Im playing a bard/monk that crafts magical alcohol potions in 3.5 and having a blast, me and the barbarian do some crazy shit when he gets wasted, he killed an entire goblin town in a night due to a "Dr. Lotion's Critical Potion TM" which gave him crits for an hour but a week long hangover (-15 to every stat lol)

Casuals can't dnd. One time a group of friends I had wanted to suddenly just play one afternoon and got all enthusiastic but gave up after an hour of setup. Most character sheets werent even started. I've had infinitely better dnd and 40k experiences using vassal on PC with random on the internet.

I don't know man. I have good friends I see a few times a year. Most of them have pulled shit like what happened to OP and I have a few times, too, but we always apologize eventually. I think what keeps each other around is that none of us has a lot of friends. We're all weird and asocial in our own way. I should try to see them more often, though. Life is fucking short after all.
