I'm thinking about turning it into a headset and upgrading to a 2017 model. I'll never be able to justify spending more than 150 on a phone.

Wow I haven’t thought about that phone in years, but it was awesome.

I actually love my phone these days. I think the phone hater people are right at least partly, but I think they also throw the baby out with the bath water as well.

People glued to their screens while sitting down to a nice dinner. Little ass kids hanging out on the playground gossiping via texts and Snapchat and what have you.

Really the whole “Buy my mixtape” culture. The whole thing is a mess and it seems like people really put the blame for damn near all the problems of this generation or at least a lot of the hate for it, on a couple things - smart phones and social media.

I agree it can be super unhealthy, but it’s like these tossers who don’t have it in them to use drugs responsibly, so they go protesting about how evil the drugs are and that everyone should stay away. Maybe you should stay away, but for those of us who care use this stuff like adults it’s just fine (can’t argue that from the whole technospying privacy angle mind you, just from the social angle. But that’s everywhere else too these days).

But it’s just awesome and under appreciated. I can wake up and pull out of my pocket the news, the daily weather and fishing forecast, local police scanner streams, identify plants and constellations and accept CC payments from just apps. endless entertainment and information. It’s incredible. The people who hate it are like the instagram junkies or those jaded because their podcasts never take off or they can’t figure out how to make circlejerk posts with mass appeal for circlejerking rights and feel goods. You don’t have to be a fucking tosser to use a phone, but it will probably make your life that much worse if you already are one and can’t control creepy and weak tendencies but it’s your own gay fault really

Phones 👌🍕🙏🏻😇🐕👳🏻‍♀️👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I had this one at one point and it had a fucking bartender app. You have no idea what that sort of power was like

Had an little iPhone 5c for the last 7 years, but upgraded recently. Hated shopping for a new one because the smart phone market now is total garbage. Ridiculous prices, pathetic storage sizes, bloated software, cumbersomely huge screens, non-removable batteries and software downgrades to ensure obsolescence, almost no competitive models with SD card or 3.5mm headphone support, indistinguishable designs, awful inter-operating system texting, real time tracking, data harvesting. All this shit for what? Gimmicks like 5 cameras and emojis and waterproofing almost no one needs? Fuck smart phones.

I had an old flip-phone for ages, broke my heart when it started glitching out. Tried to get a new one but all that was available were cheap burner ones, tried one out and the keypad sucked ass and it stopped working properly withing just two months after buying it.
I'm really waiting around for some startup to get their shit together and release flip-phones with a stripped down version of android without the flatlander icons and all that. I crave those damn buttons man, I hate having to type on something you can't rely on muscle-memory and tactile sensation for.
I've heard the japanese market have ones just like that, but I can't really import cause I need nonstandard letters.

>bartender app
Like it gave you recipes for drinks, or it was like uber but instead of a car coming over to fetch you someplace, there are bartenders that come and mix drinks for you at your party?

I mean, how can you hate a phone whose gimmick was that it wasnt the size of a damn brick

I have a Sony experia E1. The screen is all coarse because I never bothered with a protector and the headphone jack is plugged up with lint. I can't even upload an image on this board with it because it runs out of memory

I just upgraded to the new fancy iPhone XS and don’t regret a thing. I was paying 50 a month for a shiddy burner phone for years and before that a note 5 iirc. Never cared much for phones until I had to upgrade so I bit the bullet and got the iPhone xs and I’m paying the same per month (inc phone financing is $53 a month) as I switched to Xfinity. 12 a month for unlimited talk and text and I just use WiFi for data or use my 1gb in emergencies. And now I get an asset to sell back in a year or so since these stupid phones don’t depreciate at all.

I have an s7 and I fucking hate it because it won't let me just use my fingerprint to unlock the phone, it keeps forcing me to use my password ridiculously often. Also it won't let me turn up the volume past like 60% with just the buttons. It puts a prompt telling me that listening at high levels is dangerous and I HAVE to click okay before it will let me turn up the volume.

if you get a case and tempered glass covers or whatever there's no risk. plus you can get insurance.

I had an S7 Edge up until last week when I finally got around to getting the S10+. A massive change in speed and screen size. Some people in my work still use the S4 or older.

That's not depreciation, that's impairment. Except it's neither.

They're not capital expense. If the amount you're spending on your phone is significant enough to be something that you have to spread across multiple years or else your bank statements will give a materially inaccurate view of your cost of living then you need to have a good hard look at your priorities.

My phone is a smart phone. I spent about as much on it as it costs to replace and iphone screen and I'll replace it after I've had it 3-5 years because it'll probably slow down noticeably and start to get ropey by then. Had it a bit over a year so far. One of my friends has a Samsung Galaxy Y which is fucking incredible. I ditched mine because it slowed down and then started turning itself off at random with a full battery then had another phone 3 years, then got this one. He uses it like a dumb phone though and that's the secret. Once you're browsing and installing apps it bloats. My current phone is my guitar tuner and some other shit so maybe I'll kill it faster this time.

nah thats retarded, I did that for a while but if I am paying the same 50 dollars a month then why does it matter. only difference is I dont have unlimited data but I never needed it anyways. and in 2 years I can sell it for 500-600. I think losing a few hundred over the course of 2 years is worth the entertainment and ability to do my work on something other than my laptop. this is coming from someone who did the whole shitty bare bones smart phone thing for a while too but majority of those low tier phones are fucking garbage and ceased to function before the 2 year mark. and the cameras are absolute garbage on them. the new top of the line phones now have cameras comparable to dslr's

I still use MP3 players because they're more practical than a fucking phone and their battery lasts longer.

Not criticising your use, I don't use my phone enough to justify that expenditure and a lot of people might use the data but are largely spending loads of money on something they're just going to use to slap snapchat filters on their shitty pictures with. None of that means you however do not use both your expensive plan and fancy phone at a level that is close to their (high) potential because you are not me. If you use your phone more now you probably used them more. But for me, spending that money on a fancy phone would be dumb shit. My plan is equivalent to 15 dollars and I bought the phone up front. I never even come close to using my allowances up.

Top end phones have had good cameras for a long time. They'll probably never match pro but for personal use they have been well beyond adequate a long time.

Now as far as depreciation goes I'm right. If you pay every month it's already revenue expenditure. It doesn't depreciate. That's the cost of the hardware that you bought in one go spread out over years to reflect the true cost of use. You already pay monthly and that includes a small amount towards the hardware. it's already a revenue spend and doesn't require that sort of adjustment because it's there in your bank statement already.

ya my bad didnt mean to be defensive at all I get where you are coming from. I did it for years. the cameras are actually on par with older dslr's, I never thought I'd say it but go look up pictures taken with the iphone x/xs, its bananas. you can also get lenses to put in front of the phone.

about depreciation yeah I used the wrong term but I didnt know a better to way to describe it. of course it isnt the true cost but yeah since its being paid anyways it seemed like the good decision. I could've done the same thing with a cheap phone and paid $12 a month but I'm not that poor. I mean I am but $50 a month is pretty cheap, I paid that at boost mobile with a shitty burner phone.

Not really *that* old, but I've had a Galaxy Core Prime for...5 years? Doesn't even get OS updates anymore, it's been discontinued for a while. But it still works fine, and I don't care about phones enough to get a new one. I will when this one fucking breaks lmao
