Fun fact: pretty much everyone who works on railroads all universally hate foamers, since they're usually huge annoying cunts who constantly trespass in hump yards and get themselves into dangerous situations and interfere with railroad operations.

My buddy's dad worked for a commuter railroad for 35 years and he said he would always call 911 on every single foamer he saw.

no, that's exactly why they did; it's the rebuilt legendary pinnacle of steam technology that was still being designed & manufactured well into the 1940's and straight up competed literally pound for pound as the biggest steam engine ever built, it still serviced customers side-by-side modern diesel-electrics that've been in service since '31, that specific one is one of the last ones left of it's model & class that's still 100% fully functional and they all went out to see it at a pretty cinematically renowned location too, so.

it would be your fault for choosing to live where a freight rail line runs through the city.

also, they kinda have to blow the horn rolling through town for safety reasons, yes, some people cant hear a fucking train coming

be that as it may, i would find a train coming through the city fascinating, all we get here are trolleys which arent as cool.

it would probably wear thin after awhile, but not enough to try to derail it, just something you'd have to deal with

No they don't, that's just raw bullshit, I've lived in the middle of a city surrounded by rail lines and they don't have to toot their sirens the whole way through

The main difference I think is that in a functional city designed by people who know what they're doing freight lines don't go through old street car rails in the middle of a fucking road shared with traffic

usually towns popped up and flourished around rail lines with some of them being well over a 100 years old easily, urban sprawl is also a thing too where the tracks were originally on the outer edge, and if you look at the first half-minute of this webm you'll see how urban sprawl literally grew over those existing lines, so. also, in that street-running video those were auto-rack cars being hauled, either to or from a factory or a port/depot.

I can't tell if that comic is supposed to be satire or not. I love light rails because they're cheap, I don't have to deal with traffic, I can play on my phone and I can get as sloshed as I want and not endanger myself by driving. Sure it's not very convenient and it can take a lot longer to get somewhere if you have to make a bunch of transfers but overall I think it's worth it.

Freight trains can suck a dick

it's actually just one of two things:

  1. a power move; either a collection of engines needing to be moved to a different sector for logistics, or a mass hardware selloff/lease(write-off) to shortlines and parts-distributors.

2. a funeral train; engines of generic mass, dysfunctional diesel monsters doomed to be entirely scrapped and recycled for their metal.

here's a webm of a known funeral train of doomed engines:

Trains are expensive because they cover the cost of the tracks, acquiring other property, etc.
Buses and cars would exceed the cost of cars if the cost of roads were included.

What about tram-buses?
They can use road infra and, go for miles between power supplies.

You know trains are the perfect example of how a Socialist government is just better at everything. With Capitalism all we get are a bunch of cars that supposedly represent "freedom" while chaining us to car loans and car insurance and make us targets for LEOs, and meanwhile you never have the time to go anywhere because you're too busy working to afford the car payments for the vehicle you need to get go work. It becomes another endless death spiral and allows cops to root through your shit at any time and generally act like the Gestapo. You'll notice for instance that all the asking for proof of citizenship and other fascist bullshit deep inside our own borders happens when you're driving. It makes all the cities completely anti-human and anti-pedestrian but pro corporate fascism.
https://www.vox.com/2015/1/15/7551873/jaywalking-history

We would not have this kind of classist fascist state with debt slaves if we could have trains from a Socialist government for the people while nice parks and pedestrian driven city centers could thrive, and trains would save the environment and stop the rapidly dying planet and slow the anthropocene mass extinction event by switching to trains. You will notice the same fascist conspiracy is happening against trains right now. Just imagine how much oil production we could halt by switching everyone to trains. It would literally save the planet and possibly our species.

It would literally save the planet and possibly our species
Is this true? Is US auto industry stopping construction of trains? Wouldn't airline industry be more opposed to trains?

here is a converted slug unit that still has a control cab unshelled so you can see how it's core is now a concrete block, this usually happens when an old and out of date engine's diesel motor dies but the rest of the unit is still perfectly usable with some modifications, the concrete block is to replicate the weight the diesel motor and fuel so the converted slug unit can still have the same effective traction on the rails. sometimes the fuel tanks are left in place so the slug unit can pull double duty as a fuel tender too for the main mother engine.

Port Hedland, Australia, is the location of a railroad tycoon style battle between four different mining companies, competing to bring iron ore from the rich Australian outback to the nearest deepwater port. Four different companies duke it out with conveyor belt lines extending over one another to get the vital link to the sea. It's a multiplayer Factorio brawl with overlapping conveyor belts, trying to get the ore out to the rest of the world.

This is a photograph of the Mount Newman railway, the railroad that has the most powerful diesel locomotives ever exported from the USA. Observe the length of the many iron cars, and from a scale that is not perceptible to most human eyes, you will see the tip of my dick at the end of the horizon. With this huge scale in mind, it's impressive that not one, but many companies are simultaneously working the same route on, in some places, parallel track.

Keep it up train man. I have posted a couple of pics in this thread and I love getting stoned and checking these trains out. Man, some of them have a good ASS on them! Love to watch them shake and really whine, WOW!

Here's a picture of a locomotive in the Democratic Republic of Congo, operated by Sheltam, now known as Traxtion. The rail network in the DRC is in very poor condition, but remains a vital link for goods and transport, for many places the only viable form with dirt tracks being impassable and river cataracts too dangerous.

They may need to restart it for stupid boondoggle SLS because they're going to manufacture rocket boosters in Utah and shipping them by rail across the US, rather than building them close to the pad...

FYI there has never been a case of a tank train retreating, because unlike cars, trucks, and even some planes, trains weren't built with a reverse gear, trains can use any gearing it has no matter which way it goes, so tank trains have never needed to retreat even in cases when the tracks were destroyed, so.

Is increasing the gas tax good for mass transit?
On one hand, it's a regressive tax used to justify not repairing the roads during a deficit and cutting top-bracket income taxes during a surplus, and it's not like people can decide not to drive to work because the cost of gas increases when existing mass-transit is unsuitable, but at least in theory it would encourage denser development and mass transit in the rare case that it's a competing alternative to commuting by car.

In America, ending federal subsidies for oil and gas exploitation would go a long way toward 1) dis-incentivizing fossil fuel use by bringing prices in line with their actual costs of production and 2) generating more federal funds for public transit expenditures. In the short term it would mean higher costs of transit for the average citizen, but that's only until public transit systems get built or expanded, and land use in cities comes to reflect a sudden greater preference for short bus trips, bicycling, and pedestrian activity over automobile use.

The problem is that the longer we put this off, the more pain it's going to be to switch. A package bill that eliminates fossil fuel subsidies while providing funds for the development of stronger, more extensive, public transit infrastructure would go a long toward fixing the problem and reversing the trend of development being based around the automobile.

Please read the rules for the love of god and keep any and all beef out of the train thread. This is a sacred space and such negativity disrupts its healing energies.

Here is a rare train to get us back "on track"

I never bothered to check your ID in that thread, didn't realize you were the same dude. Also I have no beef with you, we had an argument and you obviously weren't ever gonna try to see the point from any other perspective than yours, so I stopped responding.
Just cause we have differing opinion on what can be defined as porn (mine being of multiple definitions, including yours, only not being limited to just that) doesn't mean I don't still would think it'd be better for you to spend your energy in ways that actually gives you something back in return. If you only care about people who have the exact same opinions and views as yourself, that's the only person you can care about, yourself. And that sounds sad as fuck.

Also you're actually wrong about it being the first time me posting in a train thread, posted something of similar meaning but much less fleshed out in one of your train-threads like 1-2 years ago, you gave it as little consideration then as you did now (don't think you even responded) so you wouldn't remember I guess.

no, we don't. YOU have an opinion, a baseless one, I have the fact that nudity itself is not pornography, period.

and I've only ever participated in train threads this year, so no, you're wrong yet again, no surprise there.

Wait, A-frame as in 2010-ish A-frame?
You sure you're not also latex-dude cause you share a vibe sort-of
Also are you sure you're not the real train-poster cause it feels like I've had this conversation with you before. Or am I just getting brain-probs cause the past week it feels like I've looped back to making the same posts as years ago for like half my posts. yes, I am that A-frame guy. I even invented the A-frame unction:
may the two rooves meet by thy beam to warm the heart of your foundation.

no, I'm not latex guy, even though I was a part of that originally when I made that mod Derpcockhic admit on /b/ for all to see that he banned latex guy for no reason at all other than that latex guy kneejerked him by simply being nonplussed and flippant when telling the people who didn't like what he was doing to just ignore him. originally latex guy was actually in the right... what happened later on was his own doing though, so.

not really, modern hybrid cars are do what diesel locomotives have been doing for decades and decades now, and those hopper cars can be loaded with anything from 30-50 tonnes of distillery grain to a 100 tonnes of zinc, I've worked at a feed mill before and it's far more energy efficient than 5-6 tractor trailers bringing the same amount.
