This. Currently we grow our food by pumping out massive amounts of freshwater groundwater that have accumulated over hundreds of thousands of years. We are projected to completely empty the two main aquifers in the US in about 20 years at this rate. Once the water is gone, it's gone and it will take thousands of years to accumulate again through rain. Basically we're just taking all the rain water from thousands of years and shooting it right back into the atmosphere where most of it lands in the ocean and becomes undrinkable.

Fresh water shortages scare me more than anything else tbh and it's insane how it's just drawn down without a single thought when we're already this close to the edge.

When I was in school I learned that the water humans and cows drink eventually gets returned to the ground supply after we piss it back out. It doesn't disappear into the 10th dimension when it gets drank.

Also our aquifers actually do get replenished by rain. There's some really boneheaded fear mongering going on in this thread.

You apparently didn't learn about it correctly. Yes, the water doesn't disappear. But it doesn't become magically clean again.

I thought the guy who was talking about it disappearing into the 10th dimension was making a joke. Apparently he thought he was making a good point. Obviously it doesn't disappear. It just doesn't instantly become drinkable.

We'll be having to treat a lot of water soon. Remember this time. Soon the water in your faucet may not be potable. You might have a second faucet for drinking water which is far more expensive, or have to order it and have it stored in a container outside, like propane.

The problem is that knowing how completely retarded humans are we're just going to end up burning more energy and opening up massive numbers of new treatment and desalination plants drawing even more and more massive amounts of power and burning ever more and more coal and other dirty energy accelerating us killing ourselves and the whole planet. I don't feel bad for humans being wiped out but I do feel bad for all the animals going extinct. The other sad thing is these fucking boomers and their godforsaken millenial prodigy aren't going to be the ones to suffer the most as consequences for their actions. But then again I'm sure that the grandkids of boomers will be walking around like faggots on the hypernet going "yeah but wouldn't all the coal we're burning that's starting to blot out sunlight make the earth cooler? Checkmate climate extremists" and then when I realize that I feel better again knowing they're going to drown in their own blood like everybody else.

If you tacitly accept that it's okay to act like psychopaths to animals then you've already opened that long dark road towards being inhuman to other humans. I don't think it any coincidence that the Nazis loaded "undesirables" onto cattle cars and sent them to giant slaughterhouses, or took great pains to compare Jews to rats and mice because when you've already accept that it's not only acceptable but virtuous to kill living breathing things that feel fear and pain, then it takes increasingly little added indoctrination to goad them into killing people very different from you, and then people only slightly different from you, until finally you're just killing people exactly like you but hey it's okay because at least they're not you.

If becomes an egocentric versus other centric worldview, of how much you either see the world as an outward projection of spheres in relation to self versus a more holistic approach to life. When you tacitly understand that killing and torturing living beings in general is wrong then it takes a hell of a lot of effort to try and out forth the argument that anybody should ever be killed. Suddenly everything from war is wrong to the death penalty is wrong to eating meat is wrong. And if you don't? Then you're literally a Republican. Now suddenly there is no wrong, and it is good even to do it. Dumbfuck Republicans are such warped and twisted caricatures of human beings they actually make such moronic arguments as killing alligators, deer, and even poaching endangered animals is a good thing because it helps save them or some twisted nonsense.

I would point out that every single serial killer has started with torturing animals and simply moved up to bigger and bigger animals. You're right in that drawing that line is arbitrary because there is no line--killing is wrong period. Just eat an apple or avacado. Would it really kill you to eat an apple or avacado and not start pointless wars or shoot unarmed black men in wheelchairs?

please, there's always a line in the sand drawn where animal suffering is quantified, usually by specious claims of neuroscientific "understandings" that carry little weight in substance beyond pseudointellectual babble masquerading as understanding. tell me how much you avoid the ants on the pavement, anon, and I'll tell you why you're just as rotten as the rest of us.

the only people who deserve to be vegetarians are jains since they're the only ones with the balls to actually take through your logical conclusions to their most natural extent.
Comma Collon - Sat, 15 Feb 2020 18:59:07 EST JysIxVYV No.4960021 Reply
I literally avoid stepping on ants and pick earthworms off the ground and throw them in the grass when it rains. It is a quantifiable thing to, of how far you're trying to move in the direction of psychopathy versus how much you're giving in to your own lazy, callous, selfish, and malevolent instincts at any given time or on average generally. A person who kills is lower than a person who only eats red meat, who is also lower than someone who occasionally eats fish in that regard. It is a commentary on how much suffering you pump into this world. That some people cause way more suffering than others doesn't mean everyone is equally bad because everyone causes suffering at some point in their lives unless you like believe in the American Protestantism version of Christianity that everyone is bad and everyone goes to the same hell regardless of how bad it is and that people who stole a candy bar in 5th grade are roasting alongside Hitler.
Mark Henry - Sat, 15 Feb 2020 19:00:15 EST QmBs14Cb No.4960022 Reply
I never said it was right to treat animals like psychopaths, i'm just saying that the majority of humanity is currently subjected to the same treatment factory farmed animals are. Certainly, a fully actualized human society could live entirely in harmony with nature, really that's the only way civilization can survive without wiping itself out. the battle we currently face has more to do with unshackling the people being mistreated, then we can move on to more and more universally egalitarian ways of life. the current obstacle we are faced with isn't being nice to animals, it's fighting back against the sociopaths behind the enslavement of both animal and man (even though we're animals but let's not get into that now). you want to jump all the way to peak wokeness when it's a step by step battle, one that starts with humanizing actual humans
Billy Kidman - Sat, 15 Feb 2020 19:08:33 EST JysIxVYV No.4960028 Reply
And why then should we simply ignore the one then, particularly when in certain cases it's literally the same thing like the horrible treatment of factory farm workers? You kill that entire complex you just liberated both. It's not like we have to pick and choose between the two. You can just as easily avoid being cruel to animals while also working for the liberation of man, and I think that a revolution in mindset is critical towards that effort. Fewer and fewer people eat meat at least in the developed world and that's a good thing just like discouraging smoking. Or we could keep living in a barbaric society that would shock even the Ferengi at their worst.
Mark Henry - Sat, 15 Feb 2020 19:20:03 EST QmBs14Cb No.4960034 Reply
yeah, sure veganism can cure some ailments. not all of them, though. especially if there isn't a system in mind to replace the current one. if everyone had to quit producing meat and opt for protein rich legumes, it would do tons of harm in the short term due to the constraints of global economics and the realities of soil depletion. not being cruel to animals doesn't really solve the aforementioned problems, allowing the full spectrum of human intelligence to be harnessed and represented is the best chance we have of doing so. it's a matter of evolution, look at ant species who farm aphids. they don't prove farming the nutrients of other animals is correct, but they do prove it is natural. if ants were allowed to reach the apex of their development, who knows what the fuck their accomplishments could be, but neither us nor ants are there. luckily for us, certain people will have an emotional connection to animals and possibly exact changes upon the system, whereas ants are essentially a hivemind. a propensity of humans who share an opinion will exact change a lot faster than a propensity of saved animals

It would probably create a huge logistical clusterfuck to certify and then reroute animal feed farms into human grade production lines, and all kinds of red tape and inspections and permits and more.
I want the animal product industry to get way, way better, but there are also some harsh truths to consider, like we have with wildlife management, where so long as there are cities set up the way they are, there will be displaced animals and ecosystems without predators, and so if you don’t have the WFC step in and hand out hunting permits, the deer will sometimes eat themselves right out of food and the whole thing collapses (including the deer population).

I get the whole animal welfare argument and I’m not against that, but I think vegans often end up missing the forest for the trees. What’s wrong about raising up some chickens in a better life than they’d live anywhere else, and just eating the eggs? Or sustainably harvesting honey? Or having some cows and getting all your fields mowed by them for free and you get some milk too. In these sorts of cases, is there still any real argument for hardline veganism? Because if you’re saying not to milk cows even if it isn’t hurting them then what is actually the problem? Brewing one bottle of Kombucha kills more “living beings” than squeezing the tit of a beloved cow and drinking fresh raw milk

I think I kind of feel kissed that the health food industry is full of such elitist bullshit. I went to pick up some dried figs and there were only a couple choices, not mission figs because those are nasty, not the ones saturated in sugar water because I don’t want Candy, so the one healthy option left? There’s like 5 pieces of flair on the bag “Woman owner business”, “non-gmo project certified” “fair trade” “gluten free”. So I knew it would be like 3 times as expensive as the others, but it doesn’t have to be like that, all I wanted was a minimally processed product, and it’s crazy that that’s some of the most expensive shit you can buy at the grocery, simply whole food products that haven’t been tampered with or jacked full of HFCS or a big list of sketchy byproduct ingredients that uses chemical names to confuse consumers who wouldn’t otherwise buy the shit if they knew what it was.

No, that's not it. It is not the big thing involved. The main source of hormone supplementation has been horse urine. Then, for some reason, they started gung-ho-ly synthesizing urine components, so by now they can at least use artificial horse urine, or whatever kind of artificial urine there might be.

And then they all dramatically scratch their heads and act bewildered, anguished and "empathetic" about where the hell these soaring rates of cancer are coming from.

You were wrong. She was able to provide something of value to you, it's only fair that she get value in return. Otherwise, why bother? It's less effort to flush it.

Someone always controls the means of production. In Socialism, it's centralized and controlled by an Administrative class who are unable to make decisions fast enough and local to the source of need, and they only consider least common denominator needs, and have no competition to motivate them. In Capitalism, it's decentralized which enables anyone (in theory) to control some means of production, enabling rapid distributed decision making local to the need and taking into account relative local differences, but the competition between localities (which drives resource reuse and optimization of the means of production) also creates winners and losers. You can't have your cake and eat it too, but on the balance of things Capitalism is more effective.

I see a very usefully very simple way to make sense of this. After all, are you forgetting that cows, in addition to being quite expensive, have fucking weird digestion, which is kind of why we've made such a habbit of using them so much in the first place? Oh, yeah, and because they've also been very useful for producing leather and milk. But that is still not all that gets produced with a cow!

Methane bitches, stop forgetting it.

Just consider most of the water used for the cow going into producing methane. Now, If we were collecting the methane, it might not be going to waste, or more correctly doing even worse than just disappearing. Come on, that's such a basic element of tracking how cow runoff spills off.

Capitalism is not a complete social structure, just an effective mechanism that should be part of a larger and more comprehensive social strategy. It can be abused just like any other tool. Mixing it with socialism softens its edges and provides for a more balanced society.
Wolfgang Puck - Wed, 19 Feb 2020 09:58:12 EST Amt3l3y2 No.4961256 Reply
Capitalism and (some schools) of socialism are not mutually exclusive. Both ideas taken to their extreme concentrate power but when set up right they diffuse it further and ideally promote the diffusion or at least resist consolidation of power and resources to the point they can be used to redefine the "rules" of society. I think the ideal system under flawed humans is one which involves not only socialism and capitalism but a mix of stability and anarchy. In the sense that we likely need to keep breaking up power blocks and excessive chunks of resources. Rather than waiting until everything goes to shit and then tearing it down which involves misery both as endgame approaches and during the shock of the revolution we need a continual process which is day to day and thus things never get awful and disruption is minimised. However those with the power to change things are the ones who lose out even once a big change has happened, so fuck knows how that's supposed to occur.

Euro countries with a 50/50 mix seem to get pretty good results. America has one of the most capitalist leaning economies in the west and the outcomes compared to total value of the economy are quite poor. However socialist economies also do well because the poor spend a higher proportion of their money, more ensuring the poorest have more resources drives short term demand growth, but more importantly investing in them improves supply growth etc. It also reduces crime and health problems and thus ensures more resources can be used for other things rather than patching up bad outcomes.

You don't need to be bad at a system to say it's shit.
>someone doesnt have a lot of money or business sense

>wtf bro you're a Socialist you're not supposed to do that
She controls the means of her own piss production. Why do you want to exploit her piss production?

Wasn't it Trotsky or someone who was talking about the need for perpetual revolution for exactly that reason? Honestly the biggest problem is lack of meritocracy. The system is so locked up at this point that you either get born into wealth or you don't. Social mobility not only has ceased to exist but is actually starting to go backwards in America.

This is a good card to play whenever anyone tells you that driving up the minimum wage just increases the price of goods. Yes, it does, but it also increases economic activity, because the money you give to the working poor goes right back into the economy.

You do have to maintain a high quality of labor still, though. Can't go the route of, say, Portugal, where it's basically impossible to get fired once you're hired on, so everyone just loafs about all day.

What a sad, pathetic existence. You have it great, so what do you do? You cheat the system and don't do any work. Great. By preventing leeches at the top, we've made new ones at the bottom. Burn all leeches with fire.

Portugal sounds pretty based. Mediterranean climate, lazy work culture, higher life expectancy than the US. I'd move if the language weren't such a disaster.

Socialism requires institutions that don't generate an unaccountable bureaucracy. That's the main hurdle which historically socialism has bashed itself against in its Stalinist form, and which threatens revolutions in places like Venezuela, where Chavistas in communes are fighting the ruling PSUV which also claims the ideological mantle of Chavismo.

We wasting methane, and feeding cows grain instead of grass. Keeping them in small pens and fattening them up with a mix of medical grade antibiotics to avoid diarrhea and corn to produce fat.

Cows ain't raised right one way or another, and water ain't the biggest thing they waste. Their poop, the land, the health of the animals, quality and flavor of their flesh, its all being flushed away for the cheapest possible product per pound.

And yet, the farmers are not to blame here, they are merely following the whims of major food production companies. Look at JR Simplot, try to guess what their environmental impact is.

So when Meatless Molotov freely chants with his spectacular water figure, it just pointlessly discourages people and provokes great doubt, it seems, cause wasted water isn't even easy to believe.

The methane factor properly underscores the wastefullness of beef especially because of interplaying with that proper feed factor of yours. If their fed grass, they need to be outside, wasting the methane and releasing it as a greenhouse gas. If on the other hand the methane is collected, that requires them to be inside and not grazing around, hence having to consume highly-deliverable pre-packaged feed.

What difference does that even make, really? Doesn't yeast eat fructose almost as easily as it does glucose? It might brown a little easier, but not much if that fructose is getting eaten before it can burn. Regular sucrose would probably have more of an impact.

Okay, but I'mma lay down a rule about that, sorbitol doesn't count, there's no reason a specific awful product of starch could be considered special when it's not just as easily made from barley, potato or cassava starch. So it doesn't matter if chocolate could be ruined by sorbitol when it's recognized as actually tasting a little better with maltitol.

Now, for the challenge, try spirits. Freeze distilled alcohol is especially apt, corn moonshine is reported to have less methanol than other types, especially applejack.

LOLno! Sorbitol may be digested very similarly to fructose, but it still has it's own special nasty effects. You may start to get very similar effects to glucose/maltose etc with maltotritol, maltotetritol and so on, but then you're dealint with something that's just one third or one quarter polyol anyway. The rest all do different things to the body than sugars, they even do seriously different things than each other.

Corn whiskey is in, molecules derived from multiple possible grains are out.

The distillation process is not what determines the methane content. It is the fermentation or fractioning.

You can cold fraction applejack. No moonshiner went blind because of their choice of starch.

Specifically bourbon style whiskey as opposed to a scotch whisky, irish whisky or japanese fruit punch.

Methane is not even any subject around brewing. Methane is the big issue of the post I just linked to. Methane is what comes from cows belching.

Methanol is the issue with brewing. Excessive amount of it come from the brewing of things high in pectin. That's why various fruits are only used for alcohol that's distilled, because it filters out the methanol, and other fusel alcohols. Except freeze distillation, which concentrates methanol.

>No moonshiner went blind because of their choice of starch.

Well, technically so, pectin goes hand in hand with glucose and fructose, no obstructive starch to throw amylase at in the first place.

Except bananas have both. Funny how what you always hear about is poisonings from banana beer.

cows man. they used to eat grass, no real point in arguing that methane production from cow farms is wasted. but i'd go further that biosecurity is threatened by unhealthy herds of monoculture bovine ruminants. grow squash, peas, beans and barley on that same ground and you're ensuring a food supply that can keep up with the population.

i put it to you that a finer product is achieved using natural yeasts and a slow ferment. this is subjective, it is my opinion.

Substitute in Barley production? That's doesn't even fit together, barley is already used to feed cattle! Also, it hardly seems very catchy, okay, so it can be used to make bread that rises somewhat worse, though better than other nonwheat grains, tastes the same, and has lower fibre content. Or a beverage that's not even shelf stable. High fructose barley syrup would find huge appeal though!

Like I told Phineas, you're making the same mistake as Jesus Farthingstock, Except Jesus's material is actually very smart in a way because, though it tells people to skip meat on monday, if they analysed the argument, they should see the need to simply give up beef in particular.

From cows to squash and peas, that a leap the size of ... I can't even see the connection. Now, if you were talking about replacing cows with goats, sheep, coconut and maybe almonds or cashews, that would be pitchable.

Then there's the other angle from the other food group, in which case it's more like a monoculture of cows, pigs and deer,

Now that the price of oil has crashed, shouldn't that mean that there'd be lots of excess palm oil anyway from that which will hardly be worth it to use in biodiesel?

he worded it pretty retardedly to be fair, I also thought he was saying the opposite of what he meant on the first like 3 or 4 readings

biodiesel is not the main demand driver for palm oil and I doubt petroleum prices are impacting palm oil prices or supply other than restricting supply chains
it's mainly a cooking oil

Oil palm is the cheapest feedstock for biodiesel, and that's on top of biodiesel comparring quite well to other biofuels, I'm not seeing coal plants getting widely refitted! Though I wouldn't be surprised if it's a bit obstructed by the chemical similarity of lard along with all the excess supply of that lard, so if the want to get it more liquid, they need something else, or if they want to get it more solid.

Biofuel is a big trend in Brazil. Gee, wonder why cullinary harmful palm oil production is so associated with Indonesia instead?

How can we deny that animals have sentience and that torturing them isn't wrong? You ever see pictures of cows in slaughterhouses looking mournful cause they had their babies ripped from them? Shit is heartbreaking
