So I'm homeless again and have an abundance of time to spare while my work visa is renewed.
Lately I've been feeding seagulls with the scraps of my rounds after dumpster diving.

It isn't a glamorous life but its still a laugh seeing 30 seagulls pull at one another for discarded food.

Money is not a problem. Work, an occupier of my time and additive to my collective lump of gold, is being held until I crack or so my suspicions have hinted me of.

Smoking weed again was also a mistake. I've got a horrible craving to smoke my entire ounce and a half but it makes me stupid and useless.

Don't feel bummed about "getting taken" by the homeless. Whether that money went to gas, a new slap chop, or crack rocks. I think sometimes we judge people harshly and it's not really fair. Maybe your money did "go to waste', or maybe it made that day toleraable (like literally, livable) for somebody who is really in dire straights and who is just going through like a state of purgatory right now.

There's a fellow out in California who is a good example of the sort of thing i'm talking about, he used to be a big businessman, but now you'll see him walking the streets out there around skid row. His home burned down one night and he lost it all, not just the property, but his entire family god burned up too.
Like he says in one of his interviews "if you can survive that....you aren't human".
I know what he's talking about and I can feel that, and honestly man who would I be to say "no it's not right to enable that guy as he wanders around in a haze trying to just....cling feebly to this world....But he hasn't given up you know. He's stood on the edge of a bridge and his a tale that makes the rounds in the NA/AA rooms around there. He didn't jump, ok he's a crack head and he's homeless.....but maybe one day he'll find his way back to something resembling peace. So best of luck I say.
Sometimes the option is a hard drug or suicide, and maybe you'll die anyway, but some people do make it back out again so just remember that life is strange and hard and even sometimes the "scumbags" don't deserve our judgement at all and when we cast it on them it's sad because it's like punishing people who are already punishing themselves.

Well I'm bummed because I dont think the dude was homeless just scamming. If it was a person I saw face to face I'd be like sorry not again man. Really I just hate scumbags who rip people off playing on sympathy. There was this one well dressed dude I saw one time when I was going into work. He was walking a well groomed dog and had nice sun glasses. He gave me a story about how he needed some money for gas because his wallet got locked in his job or something after his boss left and he was halfway home before he realized and didnt have enough to make it anywhere. Honestly I didnt even question his story because I was thinking why would a well dressed man be walking around asking for money if he wasnt in a bad temporary situation and just needs a little help today.

I gave the homie my last $5 because well I get paid tomorrow and I'll get some tips tonight that will more then replace that. The next fucking day I see that mother fucker walking around the gas station asking people for money. He nearly walks up to me while I'm pumping gas but I guess recognizes me and hopes the fuck out. I called after him but he just ignored me.

That's the shit dude. Clearly he had his shit together to some degree but just lied to get money for nothing. Fuck that. That's like lying about cancer to sympathy fuck. My guess is mommy and daddy paid the Bill's but he needed extra money for dope/pills because that was the scene in my home town. Spoiled ass kids turned dope fiends

Go to a big city and just look at curbs. Rich people throw out very nice furniture, computers and other useful things just because they're replacing them.

Cancer schmancer, generally speaking people don't understand the difference between a benign inconsequential cancer and serious cancers for one thing.

But I do agree about people judging quickly based on appearances and it leading to trouble. Like the guy in the suit with the clean cut haircut is probably the real sociopath.

Yeah this shit happens all the time. Scumbags playing on people's sympathy. I used to to tell them if they needed money for food or a bus ticket to go home I would buy them some and they'd get upset. Still I was putting my self in a precarious position with a total strangers so I stopped talking to them all together. I wanna help I really do but giving money away is just going to make it worse for everyone. Volunteering at the local food bank is my way of helping those in need.

Would you give a dollar to ten homeless people even if one of them was a scammer? Would you give a dollar to ten scammers as long as one of them was a homeless person in need?

The way I feel about it is this: you should only do something like that as long as you're not going to feel embarrassed by getting scammed. You're still trying to do the right thing.

Me personally? I don't give money to strangers, but I don't judge people who do, and I sympathize with people who get embarrassed but I really hold them to task about it. You should not go through with a good act if you're going allow yourself to become bitter and angry after you've done it.

Embarrassment isn't the same as disappointment. I get discouraged when I get scammed because I do want to believe that people are fundamentally good but it does get hard. :(

OP here.

Being polite is key. Any confrontation or encounter can become an altercation if you lose your cool. Part of any successful dumpster dive in my eyes is being respectful about being as clean as possible, and courteous to any passerby.
I've been knee or elbow deep in rubbish but I'll still say hello to any woman that passes me. Gotta work on that pussy game regardless of your settings.
Gloves might help. Also a good spatial awareness of where which bins belongs to what.
If you're after food, bring a separate container. Items that aren't edible require transport. .
Don't bust open bins either. If they're locked, leave them locked.

I scored 1kg of peanut butter brownies this morning and scared the cafe owner. Nice lady, a bit jumpy. Then i hit up my golden sushi bin for another six stacks of day old boxed sushi.

It's always good to hear about people doing this. you can feed a small community off just what like one grocery store throws away it's insane. One stat i've heard is that from seed to plate, only about 60% actually makes it, the rest goes to rot, rats, thrown away even though it's still good just out of season or no longer profitable, etc.

A joke is defined as a thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter, especially a story with a funny punchline. Humour lies in the heart of the recipient. Like beauty being in the eyes of the beholder, humour is in the recipient of the joke.

You cannot tell someone to find you funny. 'Funny' is not an objective measure.

Man it's so fucked how it's 'illegal' to be homeless, y'all have no idea just how much good food we'd throw out on the reg. It was illegal to give to the homeless for whatever reason. The local uni football team payed out 700,000$/y for us to do catering & would only eat like half of it. Lobster, cake, pasta, pie all thrown out at the end of the night even after the staff got their fill & that's just one example
