Oldest horned dinosaur fossil found in Montana - Wed, 17 Dec 2014 05:41:45 EST YuogqOIj No.22292 Reply
December 13, 2014

The Aquilops americanus, named by the scientists who found the fossil, is closely related to similar species in Asia, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE by Andrew Farke, from Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology, and colleagues.

The cranium and lower jaw were discovered south of Billings in the Bighorn Basin that stretches into northern Wyoming. The bird-like skull is a member of the neoceratopsian — or horned dinosaurs — and was found in soils about 104 to 109 million years old.

“Aquilops lived nearly 20 million years before the next oldest horned dinosaur named from North America,” Farke said in a statement. “Even so, we were surprised that it was more closely related to Asian animals than those from North America.”

The skull is small, measuring about 3 inches long, has a beaklike nose and an elongated and sharply pointed cavity over the cheek. When alive, the authors estimate it was about the size of a crow.

Little is known about the species early evolution in North America because of the sparse fossil record. But the scientists are hypothesizing the horned dinosaurs migrated from Asia into North America along the Bering Land Bridge near what is now Alaska.

Horned dinosaurs are one of the most diverse branches of ornithischian dinosaurs from the Cretaceous era, known for the unusual anatomy of their heads. Early horned dinosaurs had bony platforms for the jaw muscles that later grew into a broad frill on dinosaurs like the triceratops. Many triceratops fossils have been found in Eastern Montana.

D I N O'd as fuck for the rest of my life. Love those special people in my life but fuck them. Degrees, prestige, empty titles, cocktail hours to bullshit about your empty bullshit. Then kids, overpriced Hogwarts highschool and college, writing books, your name on stupid plaques that don't matter, and teaching fucking 18 year olds like they understand anything they hear, then dying.

I just want to DINO until I can't dinosaur anymore. I find happiness in a single passion that I've never shared (and can't) on here and such few can know. It's such a Jurassic experience, making cash and doing work, planning shit out, cashing out, feeling raw, on top of the world. I imagine it's just what being a dinosaur is like.

Acknowledge the dinos too big to challenge, work with dinos on your level, and wreck the shit out of tiny dinos and birds.

I'm a locked up dinosaur living the wrong life. I belong in some fake kokomo republic's waters with 100 keys in the hull, an AA-12 under the life vests, and two 100-round, broken-in Kahr PM9s in my pocket.

I'll never be a bird.
