I'm a big fan of the conestoga style of shelter, both for ease of construction and it's relative lack of easily identifiable straight edges. It can be made with thin green poles and finished with evergreen bough's or it can be made with 16 ft steel cattle panels and finished with a tarp. Pic related.

What is your favorite style of shelter and what is your preferred method of construction?[

if you're looking at Gas Masks rather than just a NIOSH-rated P100 respirator or mask or something (you probably wouldn't even need that high just for smoke, even those n95 masks you can get are something) , most ppl I know with gas masks sprung for the MSA Millennium, but they are not cheap. For just smoke, a gas mask is pretty serious overkill, the filters sold for these are made to withstand much more immediately dangerous substances.

Hope you find something that works for you!

I live in a deeply red area and most the people know me as a liberal. Already I have had eggs thrown at me and had people cut me off on cross walks. I got a 60 year old mother to take off of and I live on Kodiak, that little island off the south coast.

What do I do?

ever read or watch SF from decades or more ago and see weird anachronisms like they're still reading newspapers in the future or there's one big computer instead of a network, housephones, zeppelins, then you wonder what from current SF is it that there won't be in the future, the one really glaring error, the thing the future won't have because it's just so impractical, that no-one's really predicting?
I figured it out. It's people. Us. The great filter is approaching; asteroids, Martian climates or hard AI or MAD war over dwindling resources. 100 years left, the countdown is set. This species, maybe the whole planet, is fucked.

I reckon the accelerationists have it right; if we speed up enough, transfer our consciousness, make ourselves small and hard and fast then maybe, maybe some version, some remnant of us will punch through. Hard wired beneath the planet's surface. But it isn't looking likely. Post-apocalypse, post-human, post-consciousness. We're leaving behind a dead planet, boys. The dust storms are going to tear our monuments to pieces.

Your predictions are completely wrong. Things won't get so bad in 100 years, and humans dying out is nearly impossible. SciFi also shouldn't try to hard to be accurate about the future, bc this would put to many constraints on the storyteller.

From Star Wars. They fight for energy cores for their swords. What do you do then?
You fight for food everyday and if you don't you starve. You know preemptively where cash is won so most celebs do have a normal second job but it's their celeb job they win most with. Some people die in chem labs making supplies so celebs live longer and look younger. Why aren't you aiming at a top paid job to have ressources to become a celeb?

Frankly all this stuff is a little out of whack, from any reality that I have ever experienced or seen. Living in the current Covid-19 of America lends some credence as to what might happen. I just don't imagine any of you have any actual military experience or have ever been anywhere near to a survival situation outside of your fantasies.

Not that military experience is the only prerequisite to this, but it's one example and it seems like, besides hunters, they're maybe the only group of people with actual experience where a survival situation where education/know-how/toolkit would be necessary. The rest of you are just bored losers fantasizing about a societal breakdown so you can have excitement in your empty lives.

Pic related, they're what I call "Airsoft Veterans", grown men who take their roleplaying a little too seriously and have no sense of irony about how pathetic they are. It's the kind of person I think of when I skim these conversations in this board.

"military experience" ain't shit. I have my mil ID, I've shot a C7 before. But keep in mind I'm in the motherfucking NAVY bitch, it's "military experience" but my workplace is a floating office. Day-to-day I'm a goddamn Active Directory monkey and reset passwords and shit. Sometimes I do firefighter practice shit, but even then, it's gonna be a bad fucking state after any fire I fight. And I've seen on re-qual shoots on the ship and at the range, motherfuckers in the forces are TERRIBLE shots, they can barely handle their rifles properly. You'd think young people who have played Call of Duty or seen District 13 or whatever can operate an AR knockoff just from seeing it in vidya and movies so much, but nah son. I rarely see it happen. even when it can, range rules prevent any go fast shit

but that's just the navy. but you think the land forces do any "survival" shit? nah nigga. logistics win wars. fuckers chimp out without their bootleg jalapeno cheeze and timmys. even when not:

I'm going to start collecting videos and books of how-tos on a ton of survival info. From basic first aid to complex surgeries, car repairs, navigation, weather. Almost anything I can think of. I think 1tb should be more than enough.

I figure all you need is a power source and you can charge whatever, a car on the side of the road will charge your phone/laptop/tablet. Plus you can transfer it around on USBs. The only downfall I can see is something breaking, but at that point, you'd have already copied it multiple times.

I recently chilled with a buddy of mine that's a survivalist and he really liked the coat I had (pic related, tried to get the best shot I could of the pockets). It has a waterproof zipper on the front and some hidden pockets on the inside. Anyways, he mentioned maybe putting some velcro on those inside pockets to make them more secure for running and it got my mind moving. Any other ideas on making this jacket better in case society falls apart? I'm personally kicking around trying to incorporate a hood I can attach with a zipper or something for harsher weather. Also, I guess general tactical/apocalypse fashion thread.
