One of the dudes stole his dads credit card and we bought 100 dollars worth of snacks and candles to place throughout the tunnel so we wouldn't need flashlights. It was fucking awesome! this was during summer break so we would go down there everyday. It was in suburban texas and these tunnels are what those street drains that your skateboard can fall down goto. the entrance tunnel was the biggest. You could stand up in it. Then along that tunnel there were smaller round tunnels where you would have to bend over and avoid the small water stream in the middle. We would place the candles in these. then every 100 or so feet it would open up into a room that you could stand up in that had a ladder and a manhole above it. these usually went to the middle of streets. after the room it would continue to the circular tunnel to another room. eventually the tunnel started to get smaller and smaller to where we would have to crawl. we never kept going after a little bit of that because we were already some 15 minutes into the system. There were also little little tunnels that branched off a big one and led to the street drains. One time we crawled up and into a street drain, pushed off the manhole and got out just to see this asian dude cutting his bushes with a really shiny kitchen knife. like from scream.. he said something and we went back down ha ha. Throughout our growing up we would come back to the tunnels. I remember another time, we were down there doing cocaine and I guess one of the tunnels that led to the street drain echoed to the sidewalk and some lady with her kids heard us fucking around talking about doing the coke and being silly asses. She said she was going to call the police and we shout back death and rape threats. We were bad kids.

Chernobyl is also still extremely dangerous, radiation still persists in lethal pockets all over the Exclusion Zone. There also are reports from military patrols and clean-up crews of glowing red trees, disfigured animals, mutated animals, odd plant life, ect... On the scale of released radiation, as a long running scenario the contamination is environmentally damaging, but not significant outside that. Both Nagasaki and Hiroshima sustained minimal radiation release, each device had less than a 15% burn of it's core...meaning the release of radiation was minimal overall. Together, they're a paltry 38 kilotons. The Nevada Test Site is peppered with contaminated locations, the majority of test detonations having occurred underground, yet it is one of the most heavily contaminated locations in the US. NTS is often used to train military and governmental agency response personnel in a real radiological environment. The majority of tests revolved around Tests Effects, Weapons Development, and various other experiments. In total, around 200MT worth of weapons has been detonated in Nevada, the overall equivalent of total yield released world wide is 510MT over a 65 year period. The location of all the US' larger detonations, Bikini Atoll has vegetation that is contaminated on a lethal level, as is the sand. Fortunately the wrecks around the atoll, apart of "Operation Crossroads" have minimal radioactive contamination. That is mostly due to the fact that water shares most of the base elements with that of the contaminating radioisotopes, the base elements dilute the lethality of the radioisotopes making the threat minimal, if at all. The overall peak of nuclear weapons stockpiling in the 1960's hit 5,300MT in equivalent yield, or just over 10x great than that of which has been released since 1945. I think it's fair to say we have no idea how the environment would react or how the landscape would look after a global nuclear conflict.

Which is very unlikely mainly due to the fact that it'll only get into you system through breathing it in or eating it. Beta particles and gamma radiation both just zip on straight through you doing whatever damage it does. You should really be looking at how to deal with radiation poisoning rather than removing radioactive particles from your body.
