I challenge all of you to build completely useful, practical BOBs for less than $150, including the price of the bag itself. I had this idea to build bags for friends and give them out, and my price range will be roughly $150 per bag. I'm just curious what you guys would put in it.

Hey, /fo/
after playing through The Last of Us, I feel like if the world when post-apocalyptic, regardless of the cause really, the situation would be very similar to that of the world depicted, with the general environment & government declaring martial law with quarantines and whatnot. Do you think this would be the case, or some other fate? Would the government even have any interest in keeping their grasp on America or would it simply crumble and the world would have a no-man's land approach? What are your guys' thoughts?

I wonder if the last grasps of governments and organizations won't be as futile as we always imagine. I agree that looting, rioting, and general pillaging would be inevitable, but it's human nature to attempt to thrive through organized systems of civilizations. I imagine no country will remain unscathed, but if the standing armies can rally well enough to provide protection, people will flock to their safety.

Well I figure there will still be societies and I would assume still armies but I would wonder if the armies instead of making relief zones, would just help their own and leave citizens to fend for themselves. Because without a working government an army is just people without direction more or less.

Running sneakers or work/combat boots.

Running shoes are nice because they're slight and come off quickly, which could mean the difference between life and death.

Boots will help you cross most terrains easier, they're tied to your feet, they generally grow up higher, so no getting bitten in the Achilles's tendon, oh, and they'll last a million years if they're the right brand.

I go with boots, but I'm biased since I wear them every day of my life to begin with.

Does anyone have experience or interest in building off-grid tiny homes? They are usually 100-300 sq/ft. made of found and recycled materials cheaply. Some run on solar and wind power. I work a part-time job and I'm thinking of starting a tiny house project. I can buy some materials and there's plenty of scrap around me to use. I have some carpentry skills and general know-how. Anyone interested in the tiny, minimal, cheap life?

for those who go full-in-the-bag with this, as in no other property assets, I wonder what they do about costs for electricity and internet and water and bathing, but most of all funds for health emergencies (if you play to live past 65 then you will encounter them) and retirement.

It's almost revolutionary to do this

most people have a set of skills that allows them to do this ie being an artist or crafts person in traditional trade lets you make a good ammount of money with little over head. it also doesnt mean you cant have a traditional job. your home life i none of your bosses bussiness imo. they could even chop and sell wood from their land or even let people hunt it many options to make money to be honest. some people even host work shops on green building to show case what they do in order to raise funds.

most of this thread is talking about green energy (and poop). out side the cost of the equipment, panels pumps turbines ect, and replacing these there isnt much over head to these places. ive been talking a little bit about. the life style changes people will have to make.

you do have some over head, taxes and what not but most people are talking about growing their own food.

although you are correct, most people will not be able to do this on min income with out savings set aside and they will run into emergencies where they need money.

fun fact: in a properly built outhouse (or portapotty) if everyone closes the lid, all the smell vents out through that little chimney on top.

earthships have a pretty good water design, it goes drinking-[rock and plant filter]->showering/washing-[rock and plant filter]->toilet-[rock and plant filter]-> out into a leechfield lined with waterproof membrane, this water is used to sustain landscape plants and eventually makes its way back into the water table.

all this implies staying in one spot though.... if it were really a post-apoc scenario and you were moving around all the time i'd just stick with a camper, or if you insist on traveling in style, rig up a toilet that dumps to the street for emergencies.

I mean from my hands, not from the evidence. Obviously, cutting off my fingertips would work, but then I'm stuck answering "hey guy, why don't you have the ends of your fingers anymore?" with lies like "oh, my girlfriend was a sadistic body-mod domme and I just loved her sooooo much I went along with it" or "frostbite gonna bite ye, arr!" Some of the techniques I've heard is burning them off with acid, but that's likely to cause enough injury to require hospitalization (which, ironically, amputation wont), or freezing them off with dry ice. Suggest?

Chevy or Dodge van, late eighties to early nineties (they're roomier), with bulletproof glass, honeycombed tires, plating on the sides and bottom, plus extra protection around the engine and some steel storm shutters for the windows, doors, and tires, all accessible and used from the interior, and some spotlights on the side mirrors 5-0 style. A couple of solar panels for the roof, a multiple battery type charger that goes for cars, wall outlets, and USB as well as an emergency radio all in one, a HAM radio, a CB radio, my MP3 player/cell phone loaded with my apocalypse mix, my kindle (loaded with BSA handbooks, road atlases, Chilton's Manual for the van, that kind of thing), a portable DVD player with a fat stack of good flicks that can either directly use the solar panel or can be run off the charger, and cords to connect the lot to the radio in the van. Strip most of the interior, throw some hammocks up for sleeping, a lawn chair for sitting in, and a cot for relaxing prone/medical needs, shelving for food storage and other scavenged/scrounged/traded for items deemed necessary. A rain water collector that goes from the roof to a filter in the roof to the collection bucket inside, jerry tanks of gas on the trunk doors (or the doors where the trunk would be), along with a single speed bicycle with an electric motor conversion for sorties. And myself, of course.

most people don't do this, but you can clean and grease bearings to last significantly longer, but you're right about the long board thing, tho you could always put risers and big wheels on a smaller deck, for when you have to carry it around or store it, but a larger deck is definately more stable at higher speed.

the link shows a partly kevlar board ~prob not bulletproof~ but it has straps, which do enhance its defensive capabilities.

/law/ isn't as gung-ho about ditching the old ways, you know?

I ran into a bit of trouble with some loansharks who may also be well affiliated with the military and have access to government databases. How would I go about starting over without raising any flags? I haven't actually looked anything up yet, but I'm guessing it goes like this: 1) ditch everything from my old life that can be tied to me (done), 2) obtain new false birth record, 3) obtain new government ID with new false birth record, 4) lay low for the rest of my life and be chill. So then, how do I obtain a false birth record? Once that's done, getting a new gov. ID is easy peasy (birth record, plus 2 pieces of mail addressed to me = proof of residency and/or citizenship = good2go for a new ID card). There's also the ticklish business of obtaining a new social security number so I can get a job (thanks for fucking that up for everyone, Mexico). Any help you give me may implicate you in saving my life, which would be greatly appreciated.

Post Script: would assuming the identity of a deceased person be feasible these days? Do I need to find someone roughly my age? Does a death record go all the way up to the top (meaning, would it be obvious to anyone doing a routine check that the person I was assuming the identity of is actually dead and I'm an usurper?)

You're risking prison, which would make you incredibly easy to kill on the inside. You can keep your government name without using it on the grid. You can move elsewhere, get an under the table job, and just use cash.

That, or you can move to another country.
