Califaggot here, with all the fines and shit a lot more people are doing this such that a lot of times they'll just send you a massive fine and a court date instead.

If you're concerned about your water then dig your own well or (specifically with drinking water) stock up every week using water cans from a spring.

You tried storing cotton in plastic straws for you tinder? A buddy burner made from a used tuna can cardboard and old wax would help. Soda can tabs make good tensioners for your ropes. Using some chocolate on a bottom of a soda can be used to reflect the sun to start a fire. Nothing beats having pure baking soda a must have for any survival kit.

with relations between the us and russia getting worse by the day, is it time to start thinking about fallout/blast shelters if shit hits the fan and we engage in nuclear war?

or is the prospect of even a regional/limited nuclear exchange so daunting that it'd be better to run to midtown Manhattan or the Mall in D.C. to ensure you go in a flash should the missiles fly?

When SHTF, we tend to have ideas about survival, government, fuel, and food. But what about the stuff that makes life worth living?

I'm talking about booze, of course. Eventually, the liquor reserves of the world will run dry. Luckily, I know how to make some good old mountain dew. Perfect for trade, and fuel, and above all else, morale.

Does anyone else have a similar skill set?

Distilling the mash to make spirits isn't difficult, but requires equipment to control the heating of the mash, to cool and collect the vapors and to measure the temperature.

It also requires watching to make sure the temperature's in the right range (>80 <90 C). You will also not want to drink the first and last decilitres (so called head and tail) as they'll taste like crap.

So while it's not difficult, it's a lot more involved than just making mash.

Chernobyl was a catastrophic failure of a nuclear reactor, it's not a good comparative for contamination like that on scale of nuclear conflict.

Chernobyl is also still extremely dangerous, radiation still persists in lethal pockets all over the Exclusion Zone. There also are reports from military patrols and clean-up crews of glowing red trees, disfigured animals, mutated animals, odd plant life, ect... On the scale of released radiation, as a long running scenario the contamination is environmentally damaging, but not significant outside that.

Both Nagasaki and Hiroshima sustained minimal radiation release, each device had less than a 15% burn of it's core...meaning the release of radiation was minimal overall. Together, they're a paltry 38 kilotons.

The Nevada Test Site is peppered with contaminated locations, the majority of test detonations having occurred underground, yet it is one of the most heavily contaminated locations in the US. NTS is often used to train military and governmental agency response personnel in a real radiological environment. The majority of tests revolved around Tests Effects, Weapons Development, and various other experiments. In total, around 200MT worth of weapons has been detonated in Nevada, the overall equivalent of total yield released world wide is 510MT over a 65 year period.

The location of all the US' larger detonations, Bikini Atoll has vegetation that is contaminated on a lethal level, as is the sand. Fortunately the wrecks around the atoll, apart of "Operation Crossroads" have minimal radioactive contamination. That is mostly due to the fact that water shares most of the base elements with that of the contaminating radioisotopes, the base elements dilute the lethality of the radioisotopes making the threat minimal, if at all.

The overall peak of nuclear weapons stockpiling in the 1960's hit 5,300MT in equivalent yield, or just over 10x great than that of which has been released since 1945.

I think it's fair to say we have no idea how the environment would react or how the landscape would look after a global nuclear conflict.

The best way to protect against radioactive pollution is to eat mineral supplements with trace minerals like cesium

If the body is saturated from a clean source its much less likely to absorb a polluted one.

Ebenezer Blatherhood - Tue, 17 Jun 2014 05:39:32 EST al+Bmvo0 No.13153 Reply
This implies that you have alpha particle radiation.

Which is very unlikely mainly due to the fact that it'll only get into you system through breathing it in or eating it.

Beta particles and gamma radiation both just zip on straight through you doing whatever damage it does.

You should really be looking at how to deal with radiation poisoning rather than removing radioactive particles from your body.

A lot of survival scenarios involve hiking for long distances and setting up camp in the wild. I want to know if there are any people here that have good information on surviving in the wilderness. I go on day hikes often but I'm still new to camping and actual survival without civilization. I plan on going hiking/camping, each time going for another day or two until I feel comfortable spending a week alone living off of the land.

Does anyone else spend multiple days and nights outdoors or have more off-grid lifestyles?

I do it, and you're absolutely right, you should work up to it. Get to know your local wild eatables. Also, it's important for you to do this year round...Summer is easy, in most places. Fall and spring are only mildly less so, full of wild greens, fall, especially, full of wild berries and nuts.

Winter is where your true test lies. When you can spend a week in winter with nothing but basic gear, then you've got a chance.

Here's a relatively little known fact: new buds on evergreen trees are edible. They're also high in vitamin C, which is good for preventing scurvy (which actually would become an issue in any post apocalyptic situation, since you are unlikely to be eating a well balanced diet)
