Hi. This was in our basement. I must have looked at it a bunch of times, but today I noticed the cross at the top and realized it had some sort of nefarious association. Sure enough, I looked it up and it is an "Iron Cross"(proper noun?). Is there some reason it was placed on top of an America flag? Was this flag a grave marker? My grandfather fought during the time of the Wars, and has since died.(all I could think of)

The iron cross isn't a bad thing, and long predates the nazis.

That said, he probably thought it was funny, or kept it as a souvenir from when he decided to use somebody else's stick to hoist his flag.

Btw, that cross is like 800 years old.

Don't tell us which war exactly your grandfather fought in, how old he would be or anything else about your father/grandfather/uncles that might give us something to work with.

But that said I'm guessing it was captured from WW1 since there's no swastika inside or attached to the cross.

Maybe it's some kind of white power thing. Was your father a neo-nazi?

The real name is cross pattée. If you would have looked it up you would have known that. The Prussians used it before the Germans did and it was an award and nothing more. It is a recent thing that people associate it with Nazism by those silly gooses who have swastika tattoos and the like.

Prussia was a state which gradually grew from Prussia proper into the dominant power in northern Germany. It was a competitor with Austria during the rush to unify German speaking states, and eventually became the modern nation of Germany through both conquest and diplomacy. So, the poster who said "The Prussians used this cross before the Germans" may be correct as well, since the Prussian state was the precursor to Germany.

I honestly think it's because protestant scum who ruined the brand should not get to call themselves "German."

Pic related, the Reich that could have been.

Omfg... "Ger-Man"

All of the fuckers you're talking about all Germans. The existence of various political regimes does not effect the ethnicity that is the Germanic ethic group.

But yeah, the Christians really fucked up europe.
