Hey, I'm looking for unique one-of-a-kind historical artifacts, and I was wondering if you knew of any? These are the sorts of things that are described as being "the only surviving example of..." so and so. For example:

This is a picture of the Leiden Papyrus Z, which contains the only known example of handwriting by a roman emperor (Theodosius II).

As another example, here is the only surviving example of the iconic roman "scutum" tower shield.

So this is the only evidence of Crucifixion from the Ancient World.

The pictures text reads as follows: "Right: The calcaneus of Yehohanon ben Hagkol, with transfixed nail. Left: A reconstruction of what the foot may have looked like around the time of death. (Image used with kind permission of Joe Zias.)"

Yet another Roman artifact: the only known example of leather boxing gloves. Found buried under concrete.

Antikythera Mechanism. Obvious one but still really dope. People call it the world's earliest analogue computer, dated to about 100 years BCE. Used to predict astronomical events.

The Voynich Manuscript. Most bizarre medieval book, full of surreal illustrations, writen in an unknown language with an undeciphered script. But as mathematical analysis showed, it is a legitimate script and it most likely is a text with some meaning - statistically the text "makes sense", i.e. it has a syntax similar to natural languages, not just random sequence of signs. The pergamin of the pages is certainly late medieval (made between 1404 a 1438) and the book actually has a documented history, starting in the library of the XVII century Prague alchemist Georg Baresch. So far nobody has been able to establish if it is a product of a schizofrenic imagination, an elaborate joke of some bored monk or a coded text with symbolic illustrations.

OG FURSONA COMING THROUGH

The loewenmensch, a lion-headed man carved from mammoth tusk, found in a German cave in 1939. This chiseled catboy is between 35,000 and 40,000 years old, making it the oldest known work of fantasy or speculative fiction, apparently older than any of the venus figurines we've found (suggesting that furfags have been around even longer than BBWchads).

Me: "Mesoamerica couldn't possibly be more hardcore."
Mesoamerica: "Check out this infant skeleton, it was buried wearing an older kid's skull as a helmet".

This is a biface. An object with two surfaces.

It's what they had before knives.
