What is the point and purpose of war? Approaching the issue of conflict with a cool head, is it an art form? A sport? A science? A pissing contest? A part of the Archetypal Hero's Journey? All of the above? Is it a symptom of a sick or even early society, something we will be rid of after a point? What are your thoughts?

At best it's a necessary means of resolving a situation where two parties exist, with only enough resources for one to survive on, or for societies that cannot coexist to consolidate through elimination. Where necessary of course. Where there really cannot be any conceivable solution that allows both parties to live, one could entertain it necessary in the grand scheme.

At worst, it's purpose is in resolving a situation that could have been retrieved through rational discourse or some other form of diplomacy, but through human error and inadequacy the way was not seen, and stability is therefore only returned to through violent conflict. In these cases it is not necessary, and it is a straight up failure on our part.

There's many in-betweens of course, but I think these are the two basic purposes for war or reasons that war comes about

The basis of much of war is financial. It's all about maintaining financial stability, either through military industry, or by removing obstacles to future gain. In Vietnam, the French were fighting to retain control of a former colony lost during WW2. 73% of the French war was finances by the US government which eventually fully took over the war as its own. The North Vietnamese were literally fighting for their survival against an invading force. In that example you can see a multitude of causes in a single instance.

What is peace? Most successful creatures must pay for their lives in blood, either their prey must die or their predators must starve or both. We know that it's possible for humans to coexist peacefully and profitably, we can see it in our imaginations, but it's really hard to get there. Peace is possible but it isn't natural.

I think alien ecologies might evolve in such a way that symbiotic exchange becomes the norm, like enlightened capitalism but with nutrients, and competition happens on the level of one multi-species superorganism vs another. These creatures would understand war, but they would not understand predation, Earth would look like some kind of savage vore-hell.
