Thought this board could use a holiday drink thread. Anyone have any favorite favorites from this time of year? I always mix up some bourbon-eggnogs

Glögg is good stuff, which I only discovered last christmas actually. Always thought the kids-friendly version (made with berry-juice instead of wine) was sickly growing up so never considered the real thing could be anything else.

What situations does getting drunk make you more successful?

its funny because for my job i am a poker player. And i normally say its bad for being able to perform at a persons highest possible level, its surprisingly makes me play better (and alot of other pros) if i just only "open the window" 1 to 3 beer feeling max. I notice performance anxiety is leveled at a really clear point. But when you go through the window and get obliterated say goodbye to your money.

I'm not sure that i ever go to work "drunk" but i definitely feel more friendly and personable with my coworkers when i have gotten drunk the night before.

Ride a pushbike and last time i did so drunk i stacked it. Not sure that you can chip a shin and not be feeling it but i do feel a hard lump on the edge of my shinbone that doesn't seem to be going away.

Hey /hooch/. Been years (like a decade plus) since I've been on 420 chan. However, y'all seem like the most able to answer a question I have:

Why drink scotch? What's so good about it? It has a cultural cachet for sure, a reverance if you will. But it tastes like shit compared to more modern stuff like bourbon.

I have my own ideas about the answer, but first I'm interested in what you lot think.

In regards to the taste, theres simply more room for variation than in other whiskies. Its like why wine and beer have such followings as opposed to the likes of cider, because theres so many avenues. I love bourbons and ryes but you could spend your life drinking nothing but scotch and never be bored.

Not a scotch nerd but drinking old Pulteney atm which is a bit rough and ready. Tried Glenmorangie a while ago but jeesus it was very sweet.

I think the different oak species is also to blame. That's why bourbon has more of a vanila-y flavour.

>Some people are really into the peated stuff.
I've rarely had scotch (and 90% of it was J&B), but damn I love the peaty stuff. It's so smokey and tasty.

All whisky is charcoal filtered then a dying agent is added to give it back its color.

This is to avoid a louche effect, which americans did not like seeing when adding ice to their whisky

After almost a year of working at my job I've finally been called out for smelling like alcohol at work. I work in billing and sit at a computer all day. I'm so used to my job that being buzzed makes me work faster and more productively.

I know drinking at work is bad etc, but work is actually enjoyable right now and I'm doing great on my reports. How do you guys mask the smell of booze when you're drinking in public? Gum isn't working

Drink lots of water. Vodka. That should be the easiest way. If people walk by, drink from two bottles that look close to each-other. One mixed with amount of alcohol you drink, the other just water. Alternate these. Sometimes have one bottle on your desk. Sometimes two. Make them similiar but different looking. Stash one on the side of your desk in between . Water, telling you, will keep the alcohol smell from being very obvious. Gum will do nothing. Plenty of water will usually work well enough that you may only be noticeably buzzed.

Anyone else find alcohol really enhances music, more so than most drugs? I also find different drugs make me enjoy different music.

will listen to pretty much anything, but more chill and uplifting music is usually preferred
listen to shoegaze while I move around in non-euclidean space
mostly listen to electronic music but any music as long as its rhythm oriented and energetic
when drunk I listen to historical folk and military music, such as Katyusha or Ein Heller und Ein Batzen, or I listen to goofy, jovial music like Moskau by Genghis Khan. I get really into it and slap my knee, dance and sometimes sing along

pic related is the vibe I get from drinking, I feel like it connects me with history somehow

I have always felt that alcohol is like a religion in a way. Drunk people seem to connect easier or peacefully mourn a lost one where as being sober or high it's a bit more of a hurdle probs because the inhibitions are still there.

there is alot of talk of Kratom for opiate withdrawal. I just want to let anyone who is actively trying to stop drinking that kratom works as well with alc withdrawal, anxiety and honestly takes care of alot of anxiety that caused me to drink in the first place. Good alternative, ill follow post if anyone needs help navigating and doesnt know where to start on this board.

Researchers are only recently discovering the importance that mu-opioids play in our biological feelings of well-being and continued social connectedness. Receptor agonists like Naltrexone reduce alcohol cravings through a yet unknown mechanism, however they also appear to diminish feelings of social satisfaction and connection to others. Naltrexone as a self-administered drug has low ratings of compliance, theoretically this may be due to a hindrance in the social aspect of recovery felt by a patient inhibited by the medication.

My theory is that during addiction, there is significant breakdown of social connections, or that there were none to begin because of formative issues in establishing relations, and that these lost connections or the impairment in the ability to form them can be ameliorated by continual, or the addition of, opioid medications and supplementation and even aids in the recovery of social function and well-being symptomatic of the addiction brain.

Not entirely true, you can watch the following around the 50 min mark about repeated exposure to alcohol creating new neural pathways to create an analogue of a mu-opiod agonist.
Interesting thread, explains why I only have about a beer on kratom and doing more opiates makes me feel funky until its worn off.

I used to hang out with the hobos who would ride the rails I guess. For no reason but to see the bigger picture of things. We lived close enough to the rail yards and it was pretty cool. Poople would explain that you had to know what was what, street wise and traveling. They knew which trains were going where. When to jump to change direction. Otherwise, having a place to live always was closer to the streets in know how. Would hang around pretty sketchy places. This lady cop explained that people dump bodies here. We said, yes, never seen it but
no doubt it happens off and on. These two guy cops were or semed really pissed that we were parked next to the old rail yard, like we were disrupting something that was concerning to them.

should i be worried at detoxing at this level? would 200ml a day be enough to ween. And i want to be more specific. On most evenings i wake up pretty well, but after my first beer i want to ted bundy people. I guess in general for any other alcs reading this do you guys feel this way too? Like if i see someone roll a stop sign (coming from a drunk driver) it puts me into of spin of having zero hope for the human race. I think it may be more mental illness then anything else but im not sure if i already feel that way and the alc is making matters worse, or if im actually suppressing the true demon deep down.

It doesnt help that ive been under a great deal of financial stress and at 27 have yet to find any self worth. there are times it helps me deal, but others not so much.

taper now before you lose the capability. set up a 10-day or 14-day plan where you will drink every day, progressively less each day. like 1 or 2 regular beers' worth less, until on the final day you hardly drink. then detox for a couple weeks. day drinking is how you lose everything in your life. i always stick to the corny 5PM rule for the most part

Kinda. You'll probably have bad anxiety. But if you haven't had shakes/bad experiences before, then you'll just have some anxiety. The thing about booze withdrawal is each time gets worse. Over the years, it gets worse and worse.

I'd suggest buying a little something to keep on hand, just in case you start to feel like you really need something to stop the worse withdrawal symptoms. That's what I always do... but then I always drink it, no matter what.

You asked me how to keep going, and I gave you some solid advice for that. For stopping? IDFK, dude. My only real advice is: instead of AA, go to SMART recovery. They're not a cult, and they're evidence-based. Never go to AA. It's a not-fun cult.

Lately it doesn't matter how much or how little I drink, or even how much or how little caffeine I consume with it, but I just woke up on my day off and decided to party, all excited I cracked out and drank just a couple shots of some tasty whiskey.

Now I'm about ready to go back to sleep, even after trying everything between heavy caffeine consumption to physical activity, fresh air, and sunshine. I'm just going to go sleep now, fuck my life.

It didn't used to be this way, only a few months earlier I used to day drink like a boss and was active all day, maybe I'm just tired in general.
