I need some good Spanish music to listen to. I will literally accept ANYTHING that is NOT mariachi. I'm sick of that garbage.

Necesito una buena música española para escuchar. Literalmente aceptaré cualquier cosa que no sea mariachi. Estoy harto de esa basura.

Some of my favs:
Cecilia (Spanish singer)
Mecano (Spanish rock from the 90s)
Jose Luis Perales (old sad music for ladies)
Maná (South American rock)

Warning that some of Cecilia's songs are veeeery depressing but her voice is so beautiful. She died in a car accident when she was very young, a tragedy

If you're into Depeche Mode check out
They're like Depeche Mode from "Black Celebration" but more Depechey than DepecheMode themselves. Mi favorite album is no doubt " Le Modulor " moody, yet danceable synthpop of the best kind produced ever. Language wise; their lyrics are deep and lyric with layers of meaning beyon their upfront inerpretation, to the foreign ear, easy to understand with scant regionalisms or expletives. A german friend of mine said he learned to tune his ear to spanish with Moenia's music.

From "Mutacion (Le Modulor)" https://youtu.be/Q26IVsG6AE8
  • Soy una mutacion
  • Soy mi propio clon
  • Soy un simple cambio
de opinion

( I am a mutation
I am my own clone
I am just a simple
change in point of view)

Or if you are into stronger stuff, check out hocico, styled as the anagram "HoCiCoH" meaning "snout". These guys are huge in eastern europe specially germany, poland and the balkans where they tour regularly. They are your prototypical dark-electro/EBM/Cyberpunk crew. If you listen closely at the wailing-soul tortured by unearthly demons screech that the genre demands as vocals, you'll savior some if the deepest and socially conscious lyrics in spanish that i've listened to. Favorite album: Wrack and Ruin, from 2002.

From "Ecos" (Wrack and Ruin) https://youtu.be/Z3TRuFQInBI
Dime que es lo que crees?
En este mundo de intoxicados
Una voz que te enfurece
Hace eco en tus oidos alterados

(Tell me what do you believe in?
In this world of the intoxicated
A voice, infuriatingly
Echoes on youe altered hearing)
... roughly

Both bands proudly from Mexico;
mariachi they are certainly not.

How about Mercedes Sosa, the biggest star of the Nueva canción, her interpretations of south american folk songs and poetry are legendary.

Also on the world music entry level list, Camaron de la Isla for pioneering Flamenco-Rock, check his other stuff if you can stomach raw cante.
