Intro to punk music. It took me years to get a feel for the broad, overall feel for punk, and the problem is that people tend to focus either on hardcore, or early punk, or the crusty/folky stuff. The goal is, give an intro to most everything, together.

Thanks for your contribution. I personally am not interested in this at this moment. I'll be making my own thread in a while. Hopefully somebody gets something out of yours :-)

I used to be quite a punk nerd, here's some notes on your primer:
  • Those three bands were hugely influential but proto-punk, i.e. the seeds which blossomed into the real "punk movement" had a wider scope than that, which included pub rock bands (like the Count Bishops, Eddie & The Hot-Rods, Dr. Feelgood, Kilburn & The High Roads), glam rock, krautrock and garage rock
  • I wouldn't lump "NYC Punk" in with No Wave, I think the No Wave groups had a distinct sound and approach from the local punk scene
  • The Cramps are awesome but not a psychobilly band, it's a label they always rejected, though maybe one or two of their songs sorta fit the bill. Some suggestions: Guana Batz, Tiger Army, Reverend Horton Heat, Demented Are Go!. You could also look into cowpunk, which is along the same lines
  • Mention straightedge without mentioning Minor Threat?
  • The Specials and Madness were 2nd wave ska, sometimes called 2-tone after their label; they have punk flavours but the sound is closer to original ska than ska punk and 3rd wave ska, like the other bands you mentioned here.
  • Uh, "Emocore" isn't really the term to use, whoever told you that told you from their bum
  • Billy Bragg is a straight-up folk singer, I'm not sure he's ever done really "folk punk" stuff. There's a bunch of more obvious folk punk bands you could mention like Dropkick Murphys, the Violent Femmes, Flogging Molly, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Pat the Bunny's various projects, the Pogues or maybe Gogol Bordello even

Hope this is helpful and interesting, am happy to suggest more bands if anyone's interested! Just noticed you did a couple of edits, hope I've not mentioned something you've already changed~

For sure, thanks!

You're certainly right that I could expand the proto-punk section a lot, especially with pub rock, which certainly set the stage for the British punk movement.
The Cramps may not have considered themselves psychobilly, but they defined that genre. Everyone in it was effectively following their lead, much the same way all horror punk bands follow the Misfits' lead. On a related note, it's a little funny that you don't consider the Cramps a psychobilly band, but you do consider Minor Threat a straight edge band even though they rejected that term (despite coining it)
Emocore absolutely is a common term, referring specifically to the sound of the early DC Revolution Summer bands, as well as later bands that followed their sound.
Good suggestions for folk punk. Maybe including Billy Bragg was a stretch, but he was critically influential on folk punk.

>>453747
GG Allin is really tricky for categorization purposes, because he's always been a bit of an anomaly. Because of when he was active, some people categorize him as hardcore - he wasn't really part of that scene, but he was embraced in the 80s underground. His early sound was very Dead Boys influenced, and nearly verged on power pop. Then it of course got heavier and heavier, and later he experimented with country.
There's a term some people use for what he and future shock rock punk bands like the Dwarves and Clockcleaner do - "scum punk."

>>453748 The Cramps got the term "psychobilly" from the Johnny Cash song One Piece At A Time. The Cramps obviously were a big influence but they come from a long and equally-influential lineage of hot wild crazy rock n roll nutters, psychobilly is just rockabilly but somehow even wilder. Psychobilly bands took drank from the same pond as the Cramps and took it further. The psychobillies always take things too far. Point me to a psychobilly Cramps song? I'm thinking maybe their cover of Love Me is closest. Not that it really matters :) I'm wearing my Cramps jumper as I type this haha

Nah I never said i consider Minor Threat a straightedge band, like you said I only suggested it just because they coined it... I don't even really consider "straightedge" so much a punk subgenre as a mindset, they're still just punk and hardcore and emo bands and stuff who mainly sing about their cleanliness. A few of the bands listed could fit in more than one label like that. Idk dude like Rites Of Spring were one of the first emo bands, "emocore" is a bit like saying "ATM machine" or "PIN number".

Quality is less relevant to this list than relevance. The Vaselines are great, but calling them punk is a bit of a stretch. They were jangle pop, an important influence on twee pop, and they were part of the C86 indie scene.

It's not a shoddy list, its a list with limited space. I would include all that stuff if I had more room, but I have to make cuts to keep this list usable across the different boards. I understood your reasoning for being critical of the term, but I think it's irrelevant because again, it is a very common term for a specific subgenre, that being throwbacks to the early Revolution Summer sound. As I explained.
You're getting passive aggressive, so I apologize for provoking butthurt in you.

>>453786 Nah man, not the limited space, I mean your categorisation and choices. I'm only a bit butthurt because I took the time to give you pointers, this is stuff I've studied for 20-odd years. I was trying to think of it from the perspective of someone who'd use it, like if I came up to and said "hey man you're into punk, I love ska, can you recommend me some ska punk bands?" and you said Madness and the Specials, I'd be like uh, u wot m8...

Honestly not trying to flame you or anything, reading the list it seems to me like you know your shit about some things, but to fill out the list you've had a quick glance at wikipedia lists for subgenres you're less familiar with? Am I far off? I always think being accurate is more important than catering to common misnomers, because then you're just perpetuating misinformation rather than being a source of knowledge.

And you've still not shown me a psychobilly song by the Cramps

Hi guys,

Thank you so much for your patience with all of this. It's been really helpful having this spot to tweak this.

I have another edit, I'd like to say the last one, but in a few months I'll probably have something else I want to change.

I want to say, I promise I've carefully considered every recommendation that people have made. If I haven't adopted any of your recommendations, it's probably because we have very different understandings of punk, or we value different parts of it. It's inherently an imperfect list because I'm keeping it short so it can fit the constraints of other boards. But there are too many important bands and genres to include everything. Naturally, my own tastes and understandings color what I include, hence why I honestly overemphasize the 70s New York scene, anarcho-punk, post-hardcore, and crust punk. My understanding of others is incomplete, like the powerviolence section, which is based almost completely on people's recommendations since I'm just getting into that genre.

Here's the most recent version:
Proto-Punk (Stooges, New York Dolls, MC5)
NY Punk/No Wave (Ramones, Dictators, Dead Boys, Richard Hell, Patti Smith, Television, DNA, Rosa Yemen, James Chance, Suicide, Jim Carroll)
London Punk (Clash, The Jam, Sex Pistols, Damned, Adverts, X-Ray Spex, UK Subs)
LA Punk (Germs, X, Fear, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Weirdos, Dils, Dead Kennedys, Gun Club, Crime)
Oi! (Sham 69, Angelic Upstarts, Cockney Rejects)
Anarcho-Punk (Crass, Rudimentary Peni, Flux of Pink Indians, Ex, Conflict, Zounds, Subhumans)
Early Hardcore (Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Dicks, Poison Idea, MDC, Misfits, Wipers, Adolescents, Agent Orange, DOA)
UK82 (Chaos UK, Exploited, Abrasive Wheels, Adicts, GBH, Anti-Nowhere League)
Deathrock (Christian Death, .45 Grave, TSOL)
Psychobilly (Cramps, Meteors)
Crust Punk (Discharge, Amebix, Sore Throat, His Hero is Gone, Fall of Efrafa, Deviated Instinct, Nausea, From Ashes Rise, Skaven)
Straight Edge (Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, Judge, 7 Seconds, Have Heart, Bane)
Ska Punk (Specials, Operation Ivy, Madness, Choking Victim)
Post-Hardcore (Minutemen, Fugazi, Quicksand, Refused, Hüsker Dü, At the Drive-In, Jawbox, Touché Amoré, Drive Like Jehu, NoMeansNo, Unwound)

If you want to make it as comprehensive as possible, you should add horror punk (Misfits, The Other, Murderdolls, Wednesday 13, etc), early goth rock (Bauhaus, The Birthday Party), noisecore (7 Minutes of Nausea, early Anal Cunt, early Gerogerigegege), maaaybe add anarcho-deathrock.

Vice Squad definitely needs to be mentioned, most likely Action Pact as well.

Some important deathrock names are missing, Specimen (who solidified the whole genre), Alien Sex Fiend, Sex Gang Children, if you want to include more modern stuff then also All Gone Dead, Tragic Black, Scarlets Remains, Cinema Strange.

Jawbreaker is missing from post-hardcore, theyre one of the most important bands in the genre.

Erase Errata should probably be added to Riot Grrrl, possibly Sleater-Kinney too, although they arent strictly punk.

Slint shouldnt be there, since they barely took any influences from punk. Most of it came from american alternative scene like Sonic Youth, post-rock-ish stuff, some grunge, and stuff like mid-era Swans.

I would add Hail Seizures to folk punk.

Psychobilly and Rockabilly/Punkabilly should definitely be added back, theyre an important part of the punk scene.

Good point with noisecore

I'm leaning away from goth because it has so much overlap with post-punk and deathrock, and because of space constraints. However, good points with the batcave groups, I should probably include them, especially Alien Sex Fiend

I used to actually have a psychobilly section, but I removed it (as well as a digital hardcore section), but maybe I should add it back

I put Jawbreaker in the pop punk scene. It seems like they were more involved in that scene, along with groups like Screeching Weasel

I can see why Slint is questionable, and I was hesitant to include them. However, they were very involved in the Louisville post-hardcore scene, and were pretty much mentored by Fugazi (not to mention being notoriously close friends with The Jesus Lizard)

Good list, only a couple things I'm seeing is maybe missing. Proto-punk is a very nebulous concept, but I think The Velvet Underground should be in it for sure. This is kind of questionable but maybe also the Elevators should be too, despite usually being considered psych, they had a very raw, stripped down sound that influenced a lot of early punk/post-punk acts.

The Modern Loves should go somewhere for sure.

Maybe Cap'n Jazz or would you call them more straight (not a good word to use come to think of it lol but you know what I mean) emo?

Probably a few I'm missing but this is pretty exhaustive. Maybe I'll think of some more.
