eyehategod has helped me through some tough times, if you're in to metal and/or blues i would recommend it. new orleans southern metal, heavily influenced by the melvins, saint vitus, pentagram, and probably a shit load more

post amplification blues

I was depressed for so long I forgot to listen to any music. Now i have slightly time and energy, I'm trying to bring myself out of it, and rn I'm listening to the entirety of Neutral Milk Hotel and singing it too. It's cathartic.

Can't believe I didn't mention Townes Van Zandt either, but yeah as Townes said he doesn't write sad songs, he writes hopeless songs.

He also did a really good Hank Williams cover of Alone and Forsaken.

I've listened to a fair amount of depressing music, but something about old country really does it for me.

I used to listen to Radiohead's Amnesiac when I was depressed but now I try not to coz it made me feel worse. It's good when you want to sit with your feelings for a bit though

Emma Ruth Rundle is also great for drowning in moodiness. Kind of like.... if PJ Harvey had a baby with Tool? Kinda.

If I feel like I'm starting to disintegrate into a fog of terror and anguish I put on some Tim Hecker and try to make my soul leave my body.

To gay up this thread some more, if I want something more beautiful and uplifting, anything by Beach House, or Rufus Wainwright's All Days Are Nights album is good for some tender melancholy. It's an intimate, florid album of just him and a piano.
