Mike Goldberg leaving UFC

>The 20-year-run of Mike Goldberg as the lead play-by-play announcer with the UFC will end Friday night with UFC 207.

>A number of outlets reported the news and Dana White confirmed that Friday would be Goldberg's last event with the company. Goldberg leaving had been reported by us weeks ago when White noted that they were negotiating for his replacement publicly. The only name that has been brought up is Jim Rome, and it was Chael Sonnen who claimed that was the name.

>White today said he hoped to reach a deal by July with the new announcer, who would work primarily with Joe Rogan, who WME-IMG wants to keep.

>Goldberg started with UFC in 1997. In 2001, UFC interviewed people regarding replacing him and then decided to stay with him. In 2005, Goldberg was going to be hired by WWE to replace Jim Ross on Raw, but part of the deal was to no-show a live UFC event and start on Raw that same night (UFC and WWE were going head-to-head) and Goldberg ultimately turned down that deal.

>As part of the deal, Goldberg was going to have to change his name because at the time, Vince McMahon hated Bill Goldberg so much he didn't want anyone named Goldberg on Raw.

>Goldberg had been the lead announcer on PPVs and FOX shows. Jon Anik had been used as the lead announcer on most of the other shows, along with John Gooden, who handles most of the European shows.

I figure Goldberg will end up going to Bellator or another combat sports promotion willing to pay him good money.

I believe he was only fired because he wanted too much money. The same deal with Rogan, after the new owners took over he said fuck you I'm only doing regional vegas broadcasts for PPV and nothing else as in the past they had both those guys doing a ton of free promotion, such as Rogan's lamenting on his radio show of never wanting to phone Lorenzo or Dana because they would ask him to come do some silly media junket for no money.

tl;dr UFC too cheap to afford Goldberg and Rogan, would highly doubt Jim Rome gets parachuted in unless he agreed to do it for cost just to pump his radio show

He will be fine.

I trained mma for years and know the fight game well enough.

I predicted Rousey would be losing soon before she ever lost. Even told people how while they argued she could beat any man any women blah blah.

Every division when it gets its first start takes years to settle and stabilize. Women MMA when I was training paid shit and wasnt on pride or ufc. When UFC opened their womens division I told people itll be the same as any mens divsion. You will see a bunch of cans fighting cans. Then a fighter who is a better can will stomp a bunch of cans. Then once money starts flowing into the division the mercenaries come to play.

Rhonda made the womens divsion pay, the blood brought the sharks. Now the division is in a bit less of turmoil, we are starting to see the outlines of an actual stable division.

It is still around 2 years from being a proper stabilized division where you can place numbers on who is better fighters.

Dana White more than likely knew this, if he didnt he is ignorant. So he musta known like me that a division always goes through this phase.

I don't think Dana cares anymore, he cashed out his 400+million in stock and his new role is totally different, he's more the PR rep of UFC and according to Rogan and people nobody knows who is actually running the UFC anymore.

It became obvious when all the can fights stopped because it's obvious UFC just fed Rousey cans to pump up her record, same with McGregor and numerous other fighters they tried to inflate. Now everything is different, Sage Northcutt in the past they would have fed that guy at least a dozen cans before selling him out to Mickey 'Career Killer' Gall.

They were not feeding her cans. The women's division was and still is new they didn't have many well established female fighters. Everyone she fought besides Miesha Tate was coming off win streaks. They were the best challengers at the time. When Rousey fought Holm(undefeated at the time) the UFC was still under the old management so I don't know if your theory holds up.

Everyone loves to say shit like this in hindsight. Now they're "exposed" "frauds" like all those other fights were meaningless. Same thing was said about Anderson Silva. Both Silva and Rousey were so successful in their divisions they set the benchmark for other fighters to beat. The best challengers at the time won't always look good later on, especially when new and better fighters are always coming out of the woodwork.

I think Rousey might have had a longer run if she had a real coach. Edmond Tarvardyengonangin is a joke she should have sacked him and hooked up with someone who's well established in the fight game as soon as she lost to Holm.

Cormier pulled out of UFC 206 today due to injury, and now the already-mediocre card looks like a black hole as far as PPV's are concerned. Makes me wonder if they'll cancel it like they did UFC 151 and 179 since for whatever reason they can't just make it a fight night on FS1 or Fox.

  1. What are the fittest disciplines for real fighting?

2. I've glanced through C-Mass by Wade and he says there are two approaches to bodybuiling: muscle system training and nervous system training. Former max outs your mass, but doesn't develop the pure strength (maximal accelaration you can provide to a fixed mass - such as the fist on your arm) to it's full potential, whereas latter does the opposite, maxing out your mass, while not being able to enlarge your muscles up to their limit.
Obviously, there are nuances here - for example, you still have to do SOME NS training so that you can really burning it to the ground with the MS, but that's not the point.

From the point of view of the second law of motion, you can't tell which approach is better. I don't have much fighting experience, so here's my question:

With other vaiables (technic, experience, whatever) being equal, what's more optimal for a fight: heavier weight with lower strength or higher strength with lighter weight?

If we're talking MMA, then there is no clear "power" discipline, you pretty much have to be competent in all aspect. I'd say the most important would be Wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu and some form of striking (Boxing, Kickboxing, Muai Thai etc.)

But like I said, if you wanted to actually fight and be competitive, it's a whole mixture of everything

If money is not an issue, UFC Fight Pas is a great way to not only catch up on any UFC and start from there, you also get old PRIDE fights, GLORY events and a whole bunch more content.

As for the lengths of the shows, they can be pretty long. A good rule of thumb is to not miss the main cards That's where the best fighters are gonna be and you'll get more competitive fights and ususally only last about 3-4 hours, but if your trying to learn the ins-and-outs of MMA, I recommend watching as much fights as possible to understand concepts and positions.

Watching on the tube helps as well. You don't have to sit through boring promos or commercials and it makes it go by a lot quicker when you're chatting with your bros. Hope I could be of some assistence today :)

Boxing has a ton of different weight classes though. Floyd Mayweather fought across five different weight classes, but there was only a 24 pound difference from the lightest to the heaviest class he fought in. There's a 25 pound difference from featherweight to welterweight in the UFC, and it doesn't help that MMA has a much larger emphasis on weight cutting than any other sport (even wrestling, since wrestling has instituted mandatory weight cutting limits). There are also multiple organizations with their own sets of titles for weight classes, while UFC only has one for each class.

i think conor being the draw that he is precisely the reason why dana doesn't want him to hold two belts.

going from one weight division to another takes time. you want your top draw out there as many times as possible.
champions probably fight more than non champions. you don't want to over expose your top draw, or have them get hurt sooner because they are constantly cutting & facing top competition from two weight classes.

If anything, putting a less exciting guy like mighty mouse in this position might actually get guys to buy his fights...

Who are your MMA "boys"? Those MMA fighters that aren't particulary popular or well known but you look forward to watching? The names you're looking out for on the prelim cards?

Rules:
No major championships
No main event fights on major promotion's cards (UFC, Bellator, Pride)
Exceptions for the above rules can be made, for example if they were a late replacement who wouldn't be put in that position normally or the opponent is obviously the sole draw. (e.g. Joe Soto when he stepped in for Barao to fight Dillashaw).
Women can also be a "boy", but refer to them as your "girl"

Mine are Ulka Sasaki (his first fight seriously impressed me and I liked his attitude for a Japanese fighter, I also want more Japanese fighters in UFC), Michael Chiesa (although he's rapidly getting too good to be a boy, exciting fighter and great attitude), Alex Caceres (very memorable on the Ultimate fighter, I'm all for Bruce Lee fanboys actually fighting and you don't know what you expect from him) and Ryan Hall (heel hooks! I like BJJ and seeing this relatively regular looking, laid back guy beat dudes who look like they're 2 weight classes above him. His fight with Artem "nice and flowey Artem!" Lobov was legit hilarious and memorable for me).

Everyone knew this would bring in hopeless wrestling virgins and probably increase sales because they are picking up a big audience of enthusiasm kids who want to see their favorite fake fighter try out in a real life fight.

He got beat in seconds and they tuned out, do you think it isnt some sort of unique event? it won't be repeated he will not fight in the UFC again, and even if he did he wouldn't draw as much because the hopeless wrestling virgins have already come to the conclusion that the sport is fake and people like punk who want to fight in the real leagues will just be destroyed by young kids.
