ESPN rumor: UFC owners looking to sell the business, in advanced talks

>The owners of the UFC are in advanced talks to sell the business, sources told ESPN.com.

>At least four bidders are believed to have submitted bids for the organization, including WME/IMG, China Media Capital, The Blackstone Group and Dalian Wanda Group. The winning bid, should things proceed, is expected to be for a valuation between $3.5 billion and $4 billion, multiple sources with knowledge of the negotiations told ESPN.com.

>"As a private company, we don't discuss speculation or rumors related to our business," said Dave Sholler, vice president of public relations and athlete marketing for the UFC.

>Investment bank Goldman Sachs has been representing Zuffa LLC, which bought the UFC in 2001 for only $2 million. Sources with knowledge of the numbers presented to potential investors said that Goldman Sachs had represented UFC's last full year earnings in the $200 million to $250 million range, before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. A new television rights deal, which would begin in 2019, could add an additional $250 million in annual revenue to the bottom line, investors were advised.

>Lorenzo Fertitta, who with his brother Frank owned more than 80 percent of the business at last public acknowledgment, told CNN in December that the private company grossed about $600 million in revenue last year. Besides the Fertittas, who are each worth about $1.6 billion, according to Forbes, the company has two other minority investors: UFC president Dana White and the Abu Dhabi government, which, under its Flash Entertainment arm, bought a 10 percent stake in the business for an undisclosed sum in 2010.

>The leader in the bid to buy the biggest mixed martial arts business in the world is said to be Chinese-based conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group, sources said. Its chairman, Wang Jianlin, is the richest man in China, worth nearly $35 billion, according to Forbes Magazine.

>The company has slowly been getting into sports. Last year, Wanda bought a 20 percent stake in soccer superpower Atletico Madrid for a reported $48 million. In March, amid the FIFA scandal, the company agreed to sign on as a FIFA partner, the highest level of sponsorship, through 2030.

>Other bidders said to be in the mix are WME/IMG, which owns media properties and represents athletes, including Rousey, the former UFC bantamweight champion. Blackstone Group is also believed to be a bidder. A senior executive at the private equity firm, David Blitzer, owns a minority stake in the New Jersey Devils, Philadelphia 76ers and British soccer team Crystal Palace.

>Another bidder is state-backed investment firm China Media Capital, which in October beat out Dalian Wanda and national broadcaster CCTV to win the broadcast rights for the Chinese Super League, the highest level of soccer in the country. In December, CMC, with another Chinese investment group, Citic Capital, bought a 13 percent stake of British soccer team Manchester City for a reported $400 million. UFC executive vice president Garry Cook was CEO of Manchester City from 2008 to 2011.

IIRC they recently signed a $100 million deal with Fox which is what drove most of the $4 billion price tag as that was guaranteed income for whoever bought the promotion.

Dana owned 9% so cashed out $360 million dollars plus got a new stake in this company, plus he's already paid something like $15-20 million per year in bonuses and CEO salary. That Emirates prince who bought in $100 million for a 10% stake way back when just cashed out $400 million, he will probably kill many goats in celebration tonight.

Also, Fertitta's exit strategy was pretty sound. They took on as much risk as they can whereas these new owners have insane capital and connections to survive shit like new promotions popping up since UFC already laid all the hard groundwork getting regulators to allow MMA prize fighting in their states. When Dana first started UFC was illegal in almost every US state. Now any jackass with $100 million can show up and start a promotion, steal away top UFC fighters, use existing PPV network, shill via social media to save on advertising costs ect. Good time to get out

A bit general for this board, but I found something worth a read. Apparently, doctors have devised a new surgery for ACL tears that gets the ACL fixed in 6 - 8 weeks and an athlete back to training within three months. All preliminary, of course, but this could be huge for fighters in a few years when it's no longer considered experimental.

>On Wednesday, doctors at Boston Children’s Hospital announced that they have succeeded in reconnecting A.C.L.s in 10 patients using a novel technique.

>Their preliminary results at three months suggest that healing an original A.C.L. without the usual grafts may be a viable option in the future.

>In a preliminary study to assess safety, Dr. Martha Murray and her team at Boston Children’s Hospital performed standard reconstructions on 10 patients with A.C.L. tears and the experimental procedure, called bridge-enhanced A.C.L. repair, on 10 others.

>In the experimental technique, the surgeons placed a blood-soaked sponge between the ligament’s severed ends; the sponge acted as a bridge, helping the ligament grow back together over the next six to eight weeks.

>No participants in either group had ligaments that failed to reconnect, got an infection or had stiff knees.

>Three months after the operation, Mr. Peak, a doctoral candidate at Harvard School of Public Health, was back to running on the treadmill. This spring he will play ultimate Frisbee and soccer.

>However, repaired A.C.L.s have failed in the past. In the 1980’s, surgeons tried stitching torn A.C.L.s back together. The initial results were good, but five years later, less than half of those knees remained stable, Dr. Hannafin said.

Now I begin to wonder if he would've been allowed to compete in Pride FC since those fuckin ringside doctors were so hell bent on establishing vision from both eyes...

Remember that Wandy vs Cro Cop they had that motherfucker following their fingers, poking at his eye, lifting his swollen eyelid over n over for like 15 goddamned minutes. So if both eyes are that crucial to em, do they allow him to fight at all? Or make him get his eyeball fixed first?

Damn that really sucks. I remember my mate being pretty hyped for his debut because he's a real big follower of Karate, and then he goes on to KO Perosh in under 10 seconds while he was on a win streak, which finally pushed him to go train at PTT instead of Australia.

Since you are unable to comprehend english I will highlight this for you
>Robinson has been ranked as the greatest boxer of all time by sportswriters, fellow boxers, and trainers

Sugar Ray also didn't dodge the Army in WW2 and did his service unlike Ali who draft dodged, then tried to turn it into a civil rights thing when he would've never seen any combat and would just have given exhibitions to the soldiers. I don't hate Ali but he was the greatest shit talker and best at becoming famous, not the greatest fighter.

Does UFC actually license copyrighted music for their shows? I googled and saw fans complaining some songs were edited on Ultimate Fighter. I'm watching on UFC TV and already heard a few legit songs. Do they pay to use this music on their streaming service? Or is it some kind of loophole where it's only background music for the arena? (It's not really broadcast through a sound board to the main feed.)

Is it only the UFC that's under these strict laws? I'm watching a replay of an Australian card and they're playing like Kendrick and popular stuff as the entrances which they were playing live that night. It almost actually sounds like they later dubbed the songs over the video later since it sounds so clear, but I know those were the songs that were playing since I was there. Is it just because Australia might be free of those laws or is it because it isn't a big promotion they don't care? But even then it's on the Fight Pass so the UFC must know about it

Yeah that makes sense, could be a jurisdiction thing too. I also thought that the smaller promotions probably don't make any money worth going after by music companies or artists anyway.

It''s just a bit weird that even the smaller promotions that are broadcasted and have their replay streams hosted by the UFC on their official site aren't changed though all the big ones are, just a consistency thing given they're on the same service.

Ronda Rousey says suicide crossed her mind after first UFC loss

>On a segment that will appears on Tuesday's episode of Ellen, an emotional Ronda Rousey told host Ellen DeGeneres that she contemplated suicide following her November 2015 loss to Holly Hom.

>The former UFC champion appeared on the show to help promote her Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover, but the first part of their conversation centered around her title loss to Holm, the first time she's truly opened up on camera about that night. At first, subdued and serious, she said that things weren't perfect going into the fight but that's how things go. She cited that it was her third title fight in nine months and that she felt tired, but nothing too out of sorts with other fights she's had.

>She said that Holm's first shot "knocked out on her feet", cutting open her mouth and knocking her teeth loose. She lost her depth perception and that she was swinging blindly.

>She then got choked up when talking about what happened in the locker room afterward. She said she thought, "What am I anymore if I'm not this?" and said she had thought about "killing myself" and that she was "nothing" before looking up to boyfriend and UFC heavyweight Travis Browne. She said she saw him, thought that "I need to have his babies and to stay alive" and that he was meant to be there at that time.

>She said she does want to fight Holm next and to be the one that beats her.

How would you feel knowing that you contributed to bullying Ronda to suicide by saying mean things about her /mma/?

This kind of thing is a joke from a historical stand point but also funny to watch.

The rules basically reduce it to armoured grappling (which would actually be cool to see) but to try and pretend it is "close to real medieval fighting" they force them to hold weapons at all times.

The armour they wear has to be a certain thickness and the weapons have to be specially made to be "safe". On top of that strikes to unarmoured or lightly armoured areas are not allowed, this totally removing any historical type of armoured fighting tactics which naturally was all about bypassing the armour.

The vast majority of the injuries unsurprisingly come from joints being injured during takedowns and scrums. With nastier injuries turning up when either the organisers don't care about safety (eastern europe) or a competitor is an idiot and doesn't wear good armour. Or of course someone just getting unlucky and taking a hard hit to a lightly armoured location.
