Movies whose soundtracks impacted you and integrated into your life by Harry Enfield - Sat, 25 Mar 2017 17:31:35 EST ID:HO+GjJVy No.380742 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

Some of these are downright fucking embarrassing. Whow ants to admit that they learned about a band or genre from a movie, rather than a cool friend or through crate digging records and CDs yourself? Still, with T2 out it got me thinking about the movie soundtracks that I ended up listening to a lot, intrudced me to bands that I then got into, and really call me back to the time of my life when i listened to them.

>Trainspotting
saw it in early 2000s when in H.S. Velvet underground and lou reed stuff was interesting to someone as young as me, this was like kazaa or napster file sharing era. Biggest influence was New Order, I became an obsessed fan for many years of thier music. I recently heard 'Born Slippy' by Underworld and it sent me into a crazy trance of nostalgia. Also the cover of Atomic by blondie got me into blondie in a huge way for a while

>Donnie Darko
got me into Tears for Fears in a big way. Also Echo and the Bunnymen, and further into that time period/genre. It also got me obsesseed with the awesome high energy 80s neo-dandy attitude from Duran Duran. This movie was way too real around the time in my life i first saw it

>Garden State
guilty pleasure. Not proud of this but I will cop to it. I knew of Nick Drake before this I think but this may have spurred me into him more.

>The Beach (2000 with DiCaprio)
Saw this a few years ago and the music made me so nostalgic for the late 90s and early 2000s it made me fucking melt. I got into a huge mid-late 90s kick for a short stint due to this.

Only two really come to mind for me.

>Tommy Boy
I found and got pretty into a short-lived band called Seven Day Diary through this, and have since ended up loosely following the careers of two of its members (Nancy Hess and Pamela Laws/Ordonez).

>Mortal Kombat Annihilation
Got back into KMFDM and Pitchshifter in a big way, found Urban Voodoo (and Kamary Phillips), ManBREAK, Psykosonik and Cirrus, and got big into all of them and just fuck what a good soundtrack.

>Xanadu (1980)
Soundtrack is by ELO and Olivia Newton-John, just fantastic. The movie itself is godawful but the score is well worth the watch. Plus you get to see Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly dance together, which is pretty neat!

>Cocktail (1988)
Yeah the one with Tom Cruise. Not a GOOD movie but I love it, and the soundtrack is just good. I don't have any other reason to like this soundtrack other than it's just a bunch of rad happy, full-of-life songs.

>The Lost Boys (1987)
This was the first movie I ever really set out to watch on my own because I wanted to, when I was 12. It also introduced me to The Doors (People are Strange) and they went on to be the first band I ever got into. I listened to nothing but their entire discography from the time I was 12 until I was 14.

>A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Another film I watched pretty young, when I was around 13 or 14. It basically got me into classical music.

>The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
I adored the score when I first saw this movie, and the next twenty times I saw it. But nothing will beat seeing a local troupe do a performance of the play, getting up and doing the time warp with everyone in the audience, shooting each other with water guns, and screaming along with the actors.

The theatrical cut of Donnie Darko didn't have those songs in it. They re-did the soundtrack for the Director's Cut edition (which does have those songs).

Through the ages of mankind, there has been a theme that has followed us through the antediluvian time of nature, to the places of Greek epics, tales of northern gods and ale besides bonfires, the colorful pages of a comic book all the way to the big screen.

I am of course talking about being a total badass. There are tons of badass fictional characters, we have all seen someone who just was undeniably badass. Maybe it was a bald dude with a plan, a sly guy who pulls of wearing a hat or a massive beefcake monster who kills things with axes. We all got a favorite.

My vote goes to Country Mac.
Who is your favorite?

Not a western but I think related, is the film The Long Goodbye (1973). It's a Phillip Marlowe story set in the 70s and has a lot in common with acid westerns. Most obviously it's set directly after the collapse of the hippy lifestyle and deals with a lot of the existential directionlessness and nihilism as acid westerns. It also subverts most of the detective film tropes. I'd say it's worth a watch if you enjoy acid westerns. Though really most period noir films have been a bit subversive and dark, so hey whatever.

Also it has a killer score.

That music? That environment? The emphasis on how weird and intense it was to be colonizing, and how vastly different and contradictory it all was, compared to UK culture and ideology, and how vastly different that is in itself along class divides.
Theres' a lot of spooky synchronicity and rumination stuff going on in the picture as a whole

Fellow countrymen of Niger.

It crystalized for me this week. Luke Cage never had an 80s Miller run, or an Alias, or even Immortal Iron Fist. He never got one of those iconic artsy runs that "transcend" the medium and "legitimize" superheroes as serious business. He remained a raw colorful unashamed comic book character, plain and simple. So the show had nothing to ape pretentiously and stuck to that fun-loving tone. And filled the gaps with the raw colorful unashamed blaxploitation the character was born into in the 70s.

in shaman king the mc's family runs a hot spring bed and breakfast I think, so they spend a lot of time there. no moe fanservice crap to my knowledge but plenty of drug references. They had to edit out the mc's pot leaf shirts for american releases and later japanese ones but everything else is there. also you have to stick to the manga, the anime is only good for a few episodes before it goes off-canon and comes up with some ridiculous yet generic story with barely any correlation to the manga version.

They're funny as fuck. I loved them. I'm about to go check youtube to see what all the fuss was about. I guess he stirred up some controversy. One thing I noticed, was he...well I can't remember exactly what it was, but he said something that made me cock an eyebrow and wonder..."Is Dave Chappelle a Muslim?"...because I mean he went to Africa, and all that...and he kind of hates whitey...so...anyway I kept watching and later on he mentions his sister is Muslim, and I was like mind-blown. I don't get how such a smart guy can get reeled into such a fucked up cult.[/5]

Shitload of Africans are Islamic.

Also Patrice Oneal was way funnier than Chappelle and they had different styles of comedy anyway so I don't see how he would be "the new patrice" unless you mean a black comedian.

Quick question.

Is the Star Wars Holiday special a valid addition to the Star Wars cannon?
If not is it because you're racist towards wookies?

Rumor is in the next Star Wars film, we find out that just like Ben Solo, Lumpy has also joined the dark side of the Force.

Based on the Marvel Comics series by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz and from creator Noah Hawley (Fargo), Legion is the story of David Haller (Dan Stevens) – a troubled young man who may be more than human.

Diagnosed as schizophrenic as a child, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. Now in his early 30s and institutionalized once again, David loses himself in the rhythm of the structured regimen of life in the hospital: breakfast, lunch, dinner, therapy, medications, sleep. David spends the rest of his time in companionable silence alongside his chatterbox friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza), a fellow patient whose life-long drug and alcohol addiction has done nothing to quell her boundless optimism that her luck is about to change. The pleasant numbness of David’s routine is completely upended with the arrival of a beautiful and troubled new patient named Syd (Rachel Keller). Inexplicably drawn to one another, David and Syd share a startling encounter, after which he must confront the shocking possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees are the result of him being a mutant.

Cool episode. The bits done in the style of a silent film reminded me a lot of Cabinet of Dr Caligari. In fact the whole show seems to borrow a bit from that film, the asylum bits and the whole unreliable narrative deal. Although the monster approaching the characters with the lantern was very reminiscent of a famous still of Lon Chaney from the lost film London After Midnight (see pic). Gotta say I'm loving the style of this show more than anything else, they're doing a really good job.

The style rules. It's the first show to nail that Sandman, Swamp Thing, and Doom Patrol vibe of drug fueled 80s comic books.

the silent film bit made me lose my shit, this show is a work of art.

I can't believe there's only one episode left this season, it better be a showstopper.
