Horror Movie of the Day by Jean Grey-Summers - Mon, 01 Oct 2018 21:44:41 EST ID:Gb7U/+LO No.403095 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

Let's do a thread for October. I don't have anything planned but I was gonna watch 31 movies anyways so why not.

>Wishmaster (1997)
>A demonic djinn attempts to grant its owner three wishes, which will allow him to summon his brethren to Earth.

I'm surprised it took me this long to hear about and watch this. What a great horror movie. Some of the computer effects look terrible but all of the practical is fucking sweet. (see skeleton digging himself out of his own body). But the Djinn is also a really played up trickster that they have fun with.

My only problem with it is I understand that he probably needs souls to power up. But once you get to that last person why not offer them a bunch of great stuff instead of eternal suffering. I bet some of them wouldn't even know.

>Candyman (1992)
>The Candyman, a murderous soul with a hook for a hand, is accidentally summoned to reality by a skeptic grad student researching the monster's myth.

YT Trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htGWOKCH_cM

What a great villain. Candyman basically gets to be a demon that haunts you. He has enough sense to frame people and make them seem crazy, and he also has a plan the entire time. I've never heard of the candyman folk tale so I don't know if there actually is one or if they just made something up. However I can see how the vengeful soul of slaves son tortured to death for touching a white woman is a fairly believable folk legend. I've also now only got like 2 more movies till I've seen all the terrordrome movies.

Watched the first episodes of the new Channel Zero, The Haunting of Hill House, Titans, and Into the Dark. Titans was kind of a disappointment. The other three weren't bad.

I just finished up the new season of 3% as well as Maniac and Trepalium which were all decent. 3% wasn't as good as the first but Trepalium had a similar vibe and I liked it well enough.

I need to catch up on the new season of Snatch and TMITHC but haven't gotten around to it and probably wont for a while.

Its finally starting to turn colder here with fall weather and Halloween rapidly approaching so its time for my annual watches of various related things. Twin Peaks is up first though I think I will probably just watch The Northwest Passage and The Last Seven Days of Laura Palmer instead of the full series this year. For some reason I always want to rewatch it during autumn.

Also totally forgot to pay heed to the ChioChan rec, I've seen some eps of that actually. That Mananacchio dance, caught me so off guard I could hardly breathe. Probably gonna finish watching it now that I've done Asobase. Don't even remember which ep I'm at, or why I didn't continue.

>Labels it PG because the cover looks like another cheery adventure anime
>People ended up blindly watch it up until the screams and gut wrenching scenes.
>lol

I don't see the anime showing anything worse than what was shown in the first episode and I think they already left out a certain scene from manga that was suppose to be in Episode 2. I also have my doubts they'll go as far as showing women being used as meatshields or it'll be heavily toned down.

Other than that, the show is dope and I'll keep watching it but its catching flack from all different sides, people who don't like rape as a story motive, people who love Berserker, people who hate CGI, ect.

What's funny is goblin slayer in the manga is still nowhere as brutal as berserk ,and really only has the first episode and farm arc that could be considered over the top unnecessary without context.

My friend a while back called it the forest gump of manga.

I have an ongoing discussion with my friend:

-Dennis=Jerry because he's the ringleader while being disinterested and narcissistic, lot of shallow relationships, decent body but shit personality, most successful of them
-Dee=Elaine with physical comedy and being unavailable to the male lead (Jerry's ex/Dennis sister), occasional freakouts
-Charlie=George because he's the bottom rung, the idiot, weird interests and hobbies (slime and rats vs public bathrooms), some Kramer with his occasional brilliance
-Frank=Newman with similar body type, nefarious schemes, and happy go lucky outlook

So what the hell is Mac?

I think that "traditional" element ain't all that vital given that so many of the Ur-capes were all either born with powers (Superman, Wonder Woman, Sub-Mariner, OG Human Torch) or lacked them (Batman, The Spirit, The Shadow, The Phantom).
The fact that T'Challa's abilities are attached to his regency might actually be the point. He's not a relatable everyman who stumbled into power; he's a 1%er born & raised into these privileges. Albeit so that he can use them to best rule & protect his subjects. The character comes with his own metaphorical wall. Regular people aren't expected to live vicariously through him, because his responsibilities don't permit him the carefree life of a regular person.
Of course that characterization hinges on an underlying "the monarchy knows best" message. So his journey, ala Thor, entails bringing him down from that high horse & making him reevaluate his ethos. Basically the "traditional" trope in reverse. Superperson becomes more of a regular person.

So the thing about Superman is that Superman really has four identities. Yes Superman, worlds greatest hero, is an act, as is Kal-El of Krypton, the alien god, but so is the Clark Kent that works at the Daily Planet and that most people know and interact with. The real Clark is a very different guy and only really comes out when he is back in Smallville with his parents or alone with Lois or maybe shooting the shit with Bruce and Barry and Ollie.

I was thinking the other day, and I came up with a theory for why GRRM has taken so long with the latest book. I'm of the belief that he's been waiting for the show to end before he publishes it. If you think about it, it would make sense for the reader and potentially for his legacy.

For the reader, it would help a lot to differentiate between the worlds. He knew the show would probably end up way off and have dozens of threads that are stitched in different ways, making going back and forth between the book world and the show world really confusing. This could possibly keep some people from buying the book as well.
And in terms of his legacy, he might have wanted to be sure that he had the last say in how the real Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire) ends. It wouldn't take a psychic to guess that when translating something as complex and nuanced as his books to mass market on tv that a lot of things might be lost, dumbed down and/or replaced with more convenient or easy stories. So he might be wanting to safeguard his version by ensuring that it is distinct from the show universe and separating them like that could help.
That is not to mention that if he timed Winds of Winter to be published right after the show ends, it would probably sell like crazy with all that free publicity.

Anyway, that's just my guess. I think it makes sense and could also explain why he's basically been stringing his fans along for 5 years or so now. If when it was supposed to originally come out he came out and said "actually, I changed my mind. I'm not gonna publish it until the show is over in 6 or 7 years" he would have a lot of enraged fans. So better to just leave it up in the air. And I find it highly suspect that he originally projected it to release in 2014 and then when that came he just gave an extremely vague delay and all these years later we still haven't heard anything. I find it impossible to believe that he was that far behind his predicted schedule, lol. He's been putting it off purposefully. He's probably got it sitting in a safe.

This is what GRRM wants us to think. Sometimes the most simple answer is the one that's true: he's always been a slow writer and fame/pressure to write faster has only slowed his already glacial pace.

On topic of the books, I'm just learning about the book The World Of Ice And Fire. Is it worth reading? I guess it's more a history book than a novel, but is it still an entertaining read for Thrones fans? Does it come off like a collection of short stories about the past, or is it just a bland desprictions of boring old shit. Apparently Martin has a new book coming soon in the same style as this book only about the Targaerean royal history, so someone must be reading these things.

GRRM has a couple of series of novellas in the same universe. There's the Targ dynasty ones which I haven't checked out, and the Tales of Dunk and Egg which follow Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg, the future king Aegon the Unlikely, during the aftermath of the Blackfyre rebellions some 90 years before the main series. These are fun! A little more lighthearted and you get more history and cameos from people of legend. There are graphic novel versions of Dunk and Egg, but the art isn't great and you miss out on some stuff.

As for A World of Ice and Fire, I haven't read it, but it's basically an encyclopedia written from the perspective of varies maesters. I hear it's interesting and a bit of fun because of the varying degrees of reliability when it comes to entries.

The production value was good and the acting as well. It was without a flavor though, generic in the sense that it was too efficient in the things it showed. Like if the spy had a small penis, they'd just have him pull down his pants and say "i have a small penis"
