The Expanse is back tonight on Syfy with a 2-episode premiere. Prepare for political intrigue, complex plots, and awesomely beautiful space battles as tensions heat up between Earth, Mars and the Asteroid Belt mining colonies and the crew of the Rocinante has to pick a side.

The plot was bad this episode. A little disappointment here, in contrast to all previous episodes everything had that hard-scifi vibe, nothing was hand weaved away.
This episode however there were:

  • Miller suggesting to simply try to argue with the (at this point hypothetical) representation of Julie Mau to divert Eros and everybody going along with it. (could have been done better if the crew would display some self-preservation over self sacrifice and because of that choosing that option.)
  • Sudden gravity on Eros because of magic proto-molecule fairy dust (for gods sake at least come up with some techno-babble)
  • While communication is accurately depicted as time delayed the crew and the UN council can instantly not only track Eros but the missiles too.

The previous episode, while not being too convincing in terms of a ~1km large space ship hitting a several hundred km large rock would hurl it into the sun it at least was made possible to keep the suspension of disbelief by them mentioning that the nerds crunched to numbers and that considering relativistic speeds there is some number that would at least, except for material properties be consistent with conservation of momentum.

You're just setting yourself up for disappointment if you're gonna nitpick all the times a Syfy series isn't perfectly scientifically accurate.

I think that episode still did have a hard sci fi vibe.
When they were going full burn to chase Eros, they almost died from G Force from the acceleration. I had never even considered that being an issue with space travel. I thought that was really cool.
Also they never, to my knowledge, have addressed why/how there is gravity on their ships. That's likely because it would add nothing to the show and experience. Just like adding in time delay in communication would add absolutely nothing.
Also, Juice appreciation post. Anyone care to speculate what's in those drugs? Alex said in the last episode that the Juice would help them survive additional G force.

The Expanse is the exception because it's premise has been scientific accuracy from the start. So far this show has showed better consistency than even Star Trek: TNG. Now I get that producers might be in the process of changing that, and I am pointing that out.
I will watch the show regardless of that but I certainly would like them to keep the innovative idea of real physics in the storytelling (which hasn't been done on a TV space opera AFIK)

For the sake of comparison Dark Matter, has a different vibe to it and I am perfectly fine with any lack of physically based space battles or lack of logical consistency. It's a different show.

The ideas this show comes up to portray relationships is some funny shit like Josh doing a panel for his upcoming proposal like it's a movie and Lucy acting like Sherlock Holmes trying to deduce Josh's proposal and shitting on Dr. Watson. My favorite part from these two episodes was when they had the bomb squad deliver the wedding invitation to his mom and when Josh said she was Jewish everyone ran off. I've said before Katie Findlay is a welcome addition to cast and plays off Jay Baruchel so well, hopefully she sticks around.

>European movies where the Ibiza youth/party scene from the 90s-2000s plays a prominent role

'Morvan Caller' is a 2002 movie about an autistic (not really but kinda) girl who falls into ill-gotten riches after she publishes her boyfriend's novel under her name after his suicide. It's an impressionistic, visuals-led narrative that conveys more with setting and scene than dialog as Morvan travles around Europe and experiences things she would never have expected in her former life of a grocery store clerk. It's a great movie.

At one the titular Morvan brings a friend with her to Ibiza to vacation and party. The movie shows decadent, slovenly middle class 20s-30s Europeans doing tons of drugs, going crazy in rave-esque laser show dance rooms, having easy fun sex, and lounging on the beach. Aphex Twin, Can, Broadcast and Stereotlab are some of the period music they use to marvelous effect. I have become obsessed with this period of culture and music. Can anyone, especially British users, recommend me movies that have this feel and capture the youth Ibiza/Majorca scene particularly during the 90s-2000s golden years?

Personal blog: I like to mentally LARP as an upper middle class European who lives a blissful jetset/party ocean life during the summer. I'm an introverted nerdy American who spent his 20s playing PC games but now, in my early 30s, have refound a love of fitness and the outdoors, pools, oceans, etc during summer time. Lately I've been listening to Ministry of Sound house mixes and other euro electro acts (like Air France) that capture the feeling of that time and place. The sounds and styles remind me of that time of my life which was joyous but I missed out on the summer beach experiences. features many great and some obscure electronic and alt bands of the late 90s-early 00's. This music brings out the aesthetic and vibe of being totally fucking relaxed and living a paradisical life.

Based on the Marvel Comics series by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz and from creator Noah Hawley (Fargo), Legion is the story of David Haller (Dan Stevens) – a troubled young man who may be more than human.

Diagnosed as schizophrenic as a child, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. Now in his early 30s and institutionalized once again, David loses himself in the rhythm of the structured regimen of life in the hospital: breakfast, lunch, dinner, therapy, medications, sleep. David spends the rest of his time in companionable silence alongside his chatterbox friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza), a fellow patient whose life-long drug and alcohol addiction has done nothing to quell her boundless optimism that her luck is about to change. The pleasant numbness of David’s routine is completely upended with the arrival of a beautiful and troubled new patient named Syd (Rachel Keller). Inexplicably drawn to one another, David and Syd share a startling encounter, after which he must confront the shocking possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees are the result of him being a mutant.

Episodes air Wednesdays at 10pm EST on FX

you view him as pathetic, that's on you. others view him as disgusting, unsettling, all sorts of other things. You are rationalizing the creepiness away by assuming you now know what it can do, or why it does what it does. We were going to see it anyway, so they just ripped the bandage off. It's more than just some savage creature whose only motivation is murder. Yes, when the mystery behind what the creepy monster looks like (in your typical creepy monster media) dissolves the fear of the unknown, but there is still a lot that we don't know about the Yellow Eyed Devil or w/e, and now that we have a solid idea of it's actual height/size, doesn't really change anything because we already see plenty of it before then. We already knew what it looked like before this episode. It was already intended that we'd know what it looks like, the larger point is what it wants and does from here.

i'm high af and fucked up a sentence.
>in spooky monster media by having the creatures full form revealed, the mystery is solved and we have no more fear of the unknown, because we already have the creatures motivations/methods. But in this they are going in the opposite direction. We've seen the monster, but it hasn't done anything yet, that we know of. So they're working backwards on the usual monster formula it seems. I still find it creepy as fuck.

I don't think showing him for to long was the problem like in Stranger things, I think the problem is they changed something in his design. This is the only time he's had human looking pupils. Its impeccably shot, perfectly done. I was lead to it by all the endless simpsons gags about it actually. A beautiful journey of a film, kicks ass and takes names. Give it a try.

I can still hardly believe this is an actual description for an actual tv show that got made. next year we'll get a series that can be summed up as "gay teenage romance story between reincarnations of stalin and hitler set in the seinfeld universe also there's mecha".

The only really japanese power fantasy in recent times that comes to mind is Gate and its sequel. Drifters is just "Muh ancient samurai motherfucker" and one giant "what if x fought y" scenario so it gets a pass from me. The bad thing about Youjo Senki though is that it panders to fans of ww2 and with that has a giant fanbase outside of japan that consist of DEUS VULT idiots that actually take it for more than it is. I read a post of someone describing it as good because "people die" and "main character acts reasonable".

I'd argue Drifters qualifies. It's not just "muh ancient samurai", its "muh Japanese warriors from all eras land in fantasy world and immediately start taking over because wizards ain't shit to glorious nippon tactics & gunpowder". Taya is kind of the same thing, in that Taya succeeds partially due to Japanese Salaryman ruthlessness and cunning.

Watched the past two episodes. They were both alright and had their moments like Anders and Blake asking that brain injured guy about his time in the XFL and Adam being at church. This season has been pretty weak, not on 4's level, but less than the previous two seasons.

And I assume Jillian quitting TelAmeriCorp cause she got $48K is probably her final appearance on the show. My dad actually watched Workaholics with me and he thinks this show is ridiculous and I shouldn't tell anyone I watch it lol.

3 left now.

New season confirmed to have a musical episode!

We getting Nightman 2? Or a more traditional musical episode of a show where the characters all sing about their daily lives. I would be down for a Cricket ballad about life on the streets, and a Charlie/Frank duet about Nightcrawlers.

I really hope there's a more Cricket heavy episode this season. I love seeing him, but always want more.

They should make a flash forward episode where Dennis x Mac and Charlie x Dee are old couples being old assholes in a nursing home or something like that.

My prediction is that he'll lose a hand next. Then he can fashion a makeshift hook out of a clothes hanger.

Finally watched the past two episodes. They were pretty funny though I'm surprised AV Club gave PTSDee a C+ because I thought it was hilarious especially for the scenes at the PTSD meeting and Mike putting his cock in what turns out to be his daughter's face. Damn Dee was fucking cold doing that shit. I did like the last episode a lot and its similarity to Charlie Work where one member of the gang gives a shit about the bar and the rest don't. I will say Mac getting Dennis an RPG was a nice Valentine's Day gift lol.

What is the best slice of life amine out there? I wayched shirokuma cafe and I'm in love with it. I didn't expect to like it so much. Actually is there any other great anime with cute furry characters?
