Been binging Dear White People. Three episodes in and I'd already put as one of best Netflix original comedies yet. Should probably also watch the film it's based off of too.

>Everyone I know says that movie sucks and to start with Aliens.

Probably because they're very different.
Alien is a horror movie, kinda slow with lots of suspense.
Aliens is an action movie with some horror elements.

Both are great in their own right.

Currently watching the third episode of I'm Sorry, is anyone else watching it?
It's pretty funny, I'm glad I decided to check it out. Andrea Savage is way too good to be someone I've literally never heard of, and Jason Mantzoukas could make literally anything good. I didn't even realize until the start of this episode that the producers include Will Ferrel, Adam McKay, and The Lonely Island. I was pretty wary of the fact that it's on TruTV, at first, but it's good. It's on Wednesday nights if anyone else is interested.

>John Heard, the beloved star of several huge 80s and 90s movies, died Friday in Palo Alto, CA ... TMZ has learned. Heard was found dead in a hotel by the maid service ... according to family sources. Police were called to the hotel for a report of a medical emergency, but he was pronounced dead on the scene. The coroner is investigating, and cause of death is unclear at this time. We do know this ... according to his rep, John had "minor back surgery" Wednesday at Stanford Medical Center, and he was staying at the hotel while he recovered.

>Heard's most iconic role was as Peter McCallister, the dad in the "Home Alone" movies. He also had roles in "Big," "Beaches," "Gladiator" and "Pelican Brief" -- to name just a few -- and also a slew of TV roles on "Miami Vice," "The Sopranos" ... and even the first "Sharknado."

>John was 72.

Based on the popular cult comic book franchise of the same name, Preacher is an absurdly twisted and action-packed thrill ride. When Jesse Custer, a small-town preacher with a criminal past, realizes God is absent from Heaven, Jesse sets out to find Him. Along for the ride are Tulip, Jesse’s volatile true love, and Cassidy, an 119-year-old Irish vampire, who is Jesse’s best mate. The gang ends up in New Orleans, where they must dodge local gangsters, dangerous secret agents in white suits, and the Saint of Killers, an unstoppable murderous cowboy from Hell.

The season premieres June 25 with new episodes airing Mondays at 9pm EDT on AMC

Yeah I agree. I mean there just hasn't been a whole lot to talk about. I don't find the backstory particularly compelling, and the last couple episodes have been kinda boring. Though I do really like the bits with Eugene.
I miss all the great humor of the first season. It feels like it's been missing from season 2. The season premiere is the only episode that felt anything like the first season because it had all that excessive gore and jokes about siphoning gas with someone's intestines. We need more of that and less of the downer backstory stuff.

I get what people are saying about the last 2 eps, but as a comic fan, I can see where they laid out some really important character info. This is TV fans first look at the real Jesse Custer. Not a bad ass John Wayne but a toddler throwing tantrums when shit doesnt go his way. Like, beating up some dude who dated your girl back in the day is pathetic. Jesse is a naive bitch and this element of his character will lead to his Walter White moments that might cause the audience to turn on him down the line. If things go like the comic, these episodes will seem more significant eventually.

I caved and decided to start reading the comics, so I checked them out from the library. Unfortunately, they got vol 2 in before vol 1, so I gotta wait a while before reading it. Or I would, if I had any self-control. Looking forward to Jesus de Sade and (comic spoilers)Herr Starr getting raped lol.

That said, the first few chapters have been like the last two episodes: mostly character building and exposition with the rare moment of action or humor. Granted, the comics are much more compelling. I want to keep reading, whereas some of the scenes from the last episodes have had me waiting to move on.

The Ghostbusters reboot was made by a man who almost exclusively subverts genre tropes and dicks around with low brow and stupid moments.

But the original Ghostbusters isn't a subversive comedy. It's a a genuine horror comedy. The horror aspects are taken relatively seriously. That above all is the reason the new Ghostbusters is a failure. Not women, not feminist activism, although that aspect of it resulted in laughably weak arguments from white knights and feminists alike that this movie would just be FUCKING BRILLIANT when they had no evidence toward that conclusion at all.

When online media outlets got to the point of ridiculing James Rolfe when he said he wouldn't bother watching the new Ghostbusters. Despite his juvenile AVGN character, he is a family man who now lives a fairly tightly scheduled life and he is a veritable CONNISSEUR of classic horror films. He saw early on how Ghostbusters 2016 had abandoned its horror roots and simply had no interest.

All the noise around the remake just represents the worst of the internet's well meaning troll signal-boosting, recreational outrage and blind faith in ideological whatevers that have no relation to the art in question.

Ghostbusters is a cautionary tale that Doctor Who should have learned from by now. So I think there's hope, especially with crusty burnt-out Moffat bowing out for a new showrunner. The feminist part is over, we've cast a woman.
Now that MUST take a back seat to just making the best Doctor Who stories they possibly can. Learn from Fury Road and Alien. The best feminist heroines aren't concerned with being feminist, they're just strong, resourceful and independent characters in their own right. Those character traits make them iconic.

This is a very true statement, I loved fury road . Charlize was crisp in that role . But the lady doc already said she's a femenist in interviews after she was announced as the new doctor and i'm worried that is going to become a recurring thing in her role.

I have a feeling that the fan fare will die down quick and the novelty of a doc with a puss is going to get old fast.

This shit was dope. The animation is good, the voice acting is excellent, and Trevor Belmont is a perfect sarcastic badass action hero cliche. I'm really looking forward to S2. If it was written as a film trilogy, and each season keeps the quality up and covers one film in about 4 episodes, this should be just short and sweet enough to be the best game to screen adaptation ever.

So aside from a few Miyazaki films, are there any slice of life animes that appeal to non-weebs? Seems like this genre naturally has less cross-appeal than others like shonen or whatever genre Watanabe's stuff counts as.

Even harem shows have more mass appeal than slice of life.

We're just not sure what would appeal to a non-weeb. What do you look for in an anime that is not an anime exactly?

Eh, maybe Clannad and its Afterstory? It can be chill and cozy and there is no fanservice. They stick with a narrative and develop the characters as they go through highschool, graduate, become young adults trying to work jobs and start a family, etc. Shit gets downright emotional and tragic, too. There's deaths and the male lead has a drunk abusive/neglectful father. The show also avoids a lot of the modern anime tropes, though you might see some older ones. Soundtrack is good and unique, though they'll cycle the same songs before long.

Just a heads up it'l seem to start out like a harem kinda thing but trust me, once it gets going you can tell it's not, the show even briefly pokes fun at itself because of this.

It is one of those things where you need to watch from beginning to end to appreciate, fair warning.

Does having the occasional slice of life episode count?

As much as my inner otaco would love to know wtf is being said in Japanese, to me, dubs are better because I can pay full attention to the overall show instead of reading the entire scene and only see the end of it to when it changes, even if it's not a direct translation. Really, I believe I watch most anime for the art & any philosophy first and story &/or dialogue second.

What's REALLY difficult is trying to read the sub and hear the dub at the same time. ;)

The off time awkward comedy or whatever you want to call it this season has been amazing. I love the scenes between the detectives in Las Vegas detectives, especially the ones guys laugh. Dogies sex scene was biblical. Candy is great too, poor girl...

Just a random fan theory that's bouncing around, probably nothing. People think the Bear "hello Johnny, how are you today?" resembles "The Arm".

It's similar, but I doubt it goes any deeper than they just made it to look similar.

So apparently some feminists are calling Lynch a misogynist. 2 reasons.

1) Lynch put his hand around the young FBI agent's waist in the last episode
2) In episode 2 they used the classic fucking/getting murdered horror trope, and they're saying that reinforces the idea that sex is bad.

I personally think this is all just reading into nothing and exaggeration. Lynch just likes women. It's clear from his work. He may possibly even be a womanizer, I wouldn't know that. That doesn't imply misogyny at all. And as for the scene from episode 2, it's just a classic horror trope that is highly effective, and it worked really well for ep 2. There's nothing more to it than that.

Sex-negativity isn't inherently mysoginist. Lots of feminists do it all the time.

>David Lynch’s series was one of the first to use violence against women aesthetically and as motivation behind the plot.

As a McGuffin that he never intended to explore until forced to address it directly by the TV network.

Even if there are misogynistic aspects of the show, Twin Peaks is a parody of sorts. It's not automatically in favor of the tropes it's putting forth, often it brings in a trope tries to subvert or make a comment on it.

Calling Twin Peaks misogynist for these things is an incredibly superficial take. Someone might have a deeper insight than this article but I simply don't think that's the kind of thing that represents a nuanced and well supported criticism. I think it represents an over-simplified click-bait opinion piece.
