The Expanse - SEASON 1

So, after the disappointed with Star Trek Discovery, I started watching The Expanse on Amazon.

I'm a few episodes in and I have to say that the building blocks for a great series are definitely in place. I can understand why this show gets a lot of praise in science fiction communities. I've read that it's based on a book (or a book series) that I know nothing about, but it really reminds me of another modern sci-fi book series: Old Man's War by John Scalzi, but The Expanse is far less militaristic.

I really enjoy the balance between self-contained episodes and over-arching story. I don't feel like I have to binge 3-4 episodes to get my entertainment value. One episode every night or two is enough to keep me entertained and I feel like a lot of shows aren't able to walk that fine line.

I assume that this show has been discussed to death, but I thought I'd post since this board is so quiet and it's what I've been watching recently.

Just finished season 5
It was kinda weak there were things that I liked but
marcos inaros is such a lame villain with "huge" ideas but it just felt so lame when the solar system posseses and has seen an alien tech that can destroy entire planets and womrholes across the galaxy but theyre still squablling with this basic shit. And of course fucking Avirsirala becomes the Secretary General AGAIN. Idk the whole season was supposed to show Marcos showing off his super secret plan and it just felt so pointless, like wow dude you killed a few million people on Earth, fucking destroy the whole planet then Ill be impressed, your stupid Inner-Outer war pales in comparison to the scope the rest of the series has already explored; this felt like it sbouldve been the second season or something.
Didnt hate it but was kinda a dissapointment, Naomi had some fun parts at least

Well to be honest if it wasnt for Avarsarala then Inaros would have killed a whole lot more people. I'm rewatching season 1 and she talks about belters using stealth technology and throwing rocks at earth so I think it's a good pay off

I thought it was the best season so far due to the sheer amount of characterization. It was faster than season 4 and could slow down and indulge a little.

I just finished the season myself and I have to agree:

While I enjoyed the deeper exploration of everyone (except Holden)'s characters; the overarching threat of the season was totally minimized as soon as Avisarala was able to spot the remaining asteroids en route. On background, killing a few million Earthers is a big character boost along the villain axis for Inaros, but in reality, it was overshadowed by the Filip/Naomi plot. The Marco Inaros attack would have worked so much better as a cliffhanger season finale in season 4 instead of a midpoint season 5. Nothing really changed for the main characters after the attack in terms of their motivations.

I never really felt like Naomi was in any real peril and the "protomolecule" stakes were pretty weak tbh; it hadn't been in the foreground for over a season and as a result, I didn't feel that there was much to lose if the Roci didn't find the PM. Likewise, we all knew Naomi was going to be rescued; if she was set up to die, her suffering wouldn't have been stretched over 3-4 episodes, it would have been 1, maybe 2 max.

I am sad to see Alex go; he was always a fun character.

I really, really miss Klaes. I was hoping that old space pirate would have some way of surviving, but a few episodes after his death, I realized there was no deus ex machina coming to save him. He had to die for Marco to be a threat, but his death was kind of cheap in the face of the flaccid nature of Inaros' "evil potential". I also feel like Drummer's character went from 'tough, tiger lady' to 'melancholic molly' too quickly. I get that there was supposed to have been some time between seasons 4 and 5, but when you binge watch, the character turn is pretty abrupt.

Overall, I enjoyed season 5, but it was very different from the previous seasons. Even season 4, which was very locally contained, felt more like "The Expanse" than the current/just passed season.

I know it ended a couple weeks ago, but I went a few pages back and couldn’t find a thread for it.

I thought it was pretty much flawless. I’ve heard some criticisms of its accuracy Like scherbina would have never threatened an established member of the soviet science community like legasov out of a helicopter, this was 1986, not 1946; and that a speech like that at the show trial by legasov would have never happened. But pretty much all sources agree they got the setting of Pripyat and the lives of its citizens right on target, and they were some of the most compelling parts.

I’d be interested to hear from people who think it’s overrated though, considering how much critical fellatio it’s getting.

The first 4 episodes are stellar, legit perfect television. Episode 5 is 3.6/5, not great not terrible.

I mean, eps 1 through 4 shift the timeline of events, make up some things here and there, embellish certian things, but it is all within reasonable artistic license to tell a good story for television. There is no excuse for episode 5 to completely fabricate something just to turn the characters into sockpuppets. Yes, I know the soviet union sucked ass and disastrously mismanaged the whole thing, the series already had been doing a pretty damn good job showing me thatt, and it was unnecessary to dedicate a full hour of exposition to reiterate the point. There had to be a better way to end the series, come on.

This thread is another collection of good movies to watch any day of the year! I will post one film...every now and again.

Movie of the Day:
>The Descent (2005)
A British action adventure horror film written and directed by Neil Marshall. Five women embark on a spelunking expedition in an effort to support their grieving friend, a widow who lost her child and her husband in an accident one year prior to the main events of the film. It pits the women against nature, one another, and a predatory other. Dangerous circumstances and sexual rivalry conspire to strip all sophistication from the group; civilization erodes and the protagonists are left alone with only their baser instincts, glow sticks, and a damp cave full of monsters. It premiered at the 2005 Dead By Dawn film festival.

There was just a crazy mishap or something at the TV station, and they had pornos going on regular broadcast television as part of the shows, and part of it was live, and it kept glitching and I'm not sure we were supposed to see parts of it. I got it recorded on video, with my camcorder pointed at the TV, and I want to upload it somewhere, but I don't know where to upload the video because it's copyrighted and it's pornographic.

And this came after she had made transphobic comments mocking gender pronouns, which Pedro Pascal had tried to teach her why that wasn't okay since his sibling is transgender. It also cost her being cast in Rangers of the New Republic, which she was supposed to star in but after that happened they didn't announce her being on the show. She could have easily have avoided this whole thing and kept her job if she didn't do all that but hey I guess Ben Shapiro got her a new job now.

It sucks it's ending but it's been on the air for 7 seasons already so it makes sense to end it when you consider other workplace comedies that aired on NBC like The Office, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, and Scrubs all ended after 7-9 seasons too. Yes they had to scrap a few scripts because of current events from the past year but I don't think it has anything to do with it ending.

48 Hours was awesome but Another 48 Hours was the opposite of it though Paramount cutting the film from 145 to 95 minutes didn't help. I would hope someday Walter Hill could release a director's cut of the film. Apparently according to Brion James, who played Ben Kehoe, Total Recall fucked it over:

>Total Recall came out a week before Another 48 Hrs. (1990) that summer, it made twenty-five million, became the number one movie in the country and the studio panicked because they had invested a lot in the 48 Hours films, but they felt that at well over two hours, that the movie might be too much. My stuff was in there until one week before the film opened; that is when they cut twenty-five minutes out of that movie, a week before it opened. It went from around 140 to down around 95 minutes. They said, "Cut all the behavior, action, comedy..." I lost every major scene I had. That's the last time I ever cared about a movie because I went to the press screening and it was like getting kicked in the stomach, seeing what is not there. I was the third lead and now I looked like a dressed extra. All the stuff that they had in the set-up, stuff in the trailer, all those scenes were gone.

Tremors 2 > Tremors

It's pretty much a perfect sequel, with a tight script, better comedy, and the dynamic between Earl Basset and Michael Gross worked even better than the Bacon/Basset duo in the original. Also, it is the last sequel that doesn't entirely gravitate around Michael Gross, whose character became a walking gimmick.

Dunno about Al Pacino, but Robert DeNiro gives zero fucks if he plays in a bad film. To him, film is like work, and if he gets no good scripts for a while, he'll just get a bad script and play in that.
He talked about it in an interview, something about him doing acting like it's blue collar work. He had to, for his dad (who was a plumber maybe), and he kept it up even after his dad died.

Getting someone to touch an older man on the head and pat it turns you into an athlete, professional sports probably, coach if a failure, a deal with the devil.

>it felt more like a Quentin Tarantino script than a Coen script and I definitely agree, and that's being charitable
I think this is probably close to the truth, although Tarantino scripts are known for oozing tension and holding momentum all the way through, and i don't think s4 quite managed that - it was more like Miller's Crossing for dummies. It felt like the Coen moments were few and far between and added as an afterthought (Gaetano shooting himself in the head comes to mind)
Hawley's thing is always that he doesn't wanna repeat himself, which I admire, but imo if you're done emulating the Coen brothers then you're done making a TV show named after their most famous film.

I don't know that Satchel was ever supposed to be a twist, I think it was just showing us how that happened. But as you say, it makes no fucking sense. It was beginning to make sense around the 8 episode mark - kid gets used as a bargaining chip and swapped to another family, his dad tells him he'll always keep him safe and bring him home soon, then the kid comes this close to getting executed and this guy Milligan risks everything for him even though he has nothing to gain and they go on the run - but then the kid just walks home, it's all happy families and all is forgiven. Never mind that I nearly got murdered for your racketeering business and you didn't do shit dad, gee I should really pay tribute to that Irish dude someday.

Olyphant's character was easily the highlight. Funny, dangerous without trying. I actually really liked twitchy cop as well and all their scenes together, I just wish their story had actually gone somewhere.

>Shame, because the costumes, makeup, and set design were all fucking superb.

Just finished it, and yeah. Easily the weakest season by far. Completely aimless and meandering plot. Most interesting characters are given almost no screen time. No compelling central antagonist like Malvo or Varga. Ghost thing was stupid and went nowhere. Just a unfocused disappointment.
