The dorky male origins of nerdom View Thread Reply Hide Jeff Goldblum - Wed, 26 Aug 2020 18:24:10 EST 0NqZtmUY No.416291 File: 1598480650233.jpg -(13725B / 13.40KB, 213x300) Thumbnail displayed, click image for full size. Let's start with this: https://cosmicbook.news/disney-purging-star-wars-marvel-woke-agendaNow my, admittedly gender centric politically incorrect, take on the subject of sci-fi, comic books, and all things nerdy, in general. The favored subjects of nerdom, mentioned above, arrived on the main subculture scene in the wake of WW2 (although it's origins are in the late 19th century). Many young GIs returning from the war had become fans of sci-fi and comic books during their time in military service. Now, back at home, with much leisure time and good paying jobs, they began consuming their favored genres in increasing quantities. A decade later, their children adopted what was their father's former interest. Now though, being the mid-50s and society mostly re-normalized in an atomic age kind of way, sci-fi and comic books were preferred mostly by non-athletic, indoorsy types, exemplified by R E Howard and many other writers. Demonized by Sen. Kefauver, comic books became a subject of public scorn, further driving down the nerdy subject demographic audience size. Through this whole period it was almost exclusively boys that carried the core subjects of nerdom. It was a refuge from the bullying of more "manly" boys who viewed nerds as very nearly girls. It was also a refuge from girls, whom the nerdy boys had little success. Thus it was for half a century. But then, some time in the early 2000s, something changed. The children of the sons of those GIs of old had now attained adulthood. Raised on fare of Star Wars and Star Trek and X-Men and Batman, and with the spending power of adulthood, they began flicking to the cherished subjects of their youth. Responding to this, publishers andedia companies began to see the marketing potential of nerdom. And so the subjects of sci-fi and comic books began being marketed to girls. This is the problem: girls are not the inheritors of nerdom. They have, historically and as a group, derided nerds as unfit to associate with. Yet now, in the 2020s, and for a few years prior, we see girls attempting to insinuate themselves into need culture, driven by marketing by media companies, telling girls that nerdy subjects are cool.I reject this. Need culture is a clubhouse on the door of which is written "no girls allowed." This is not a dig at girls (or women, or females, or however you choose to signify non-maleness). This is drawing a line, as a historically marginalized person - a nerd. To girls I say, this thing is not for you. This is a thing that boys and men have built for themselves and it is wrong for you, at this late hour, after decades of rejection of nerdom, to now insist that you be included. There are NO girl Jedis. 3 posts and 1 images omitted. What is the mix of emotions called when feeling fear and joy at the same time?I’d go for a word that means something like paralyzed with terror, melding into the highest ecstasy and excitement, but more so wedded together like a sexual partners of any sort will seek in their desires - as the scriptures wistfully say, one flesh. That’s contentment. Contentment has content. It also works to contain the limits of another thing - like a soup can delimits how far the soup can flow, and stabilizes the soup in the can. And we are not easily stabilized - take a running stream on a mountainside. It is happy and sad within bounds, and within the same bounds, accepting a portion of fear and joy to bear with also. I don’t want you to think of this as a kind of compromise, settling for only terror and calm. It natively has a level of acceptance of things as they are in it. There is point and direction in existence. For people and for all things alive or not alive, what was, what is, and what shall be is true equanimity as Pyrrho and Epicurus achieved I don’t have to expect too much! I don’t have to complain! I don’t have to regret or envy! I’m just thankful for life! Tell me about VICE. Why is there such a dedicated base of people who hate their content so much they're singularly incapable of not viewing every single video and post they made to reeee? I cannot think of a single other company or IP that has such a huge number of consistent viewers who absolutely hate everything they do. I've always known it existed and liked their and I've not really noticed a change in content or slant since I started having a passing interest in their stuff in 2012 but maybe it had already fallen by then. But I doubt it, seeing as it started as a punk zine. I didn't start watching it before but is it really as simple as Gavin becoming retarded and taking a slice of the fans with him? Fans who definitely aren't ass-pained at all to have such a seething hatred for a media company instead of I dunno just watching something else. I mean even their pre-split content is not really any different. Is it just a case of collective brain damage as these people fell for "cOnSerVatiSM iS tHE neW PUnk rocK" meme and genuinely are disconnected from reality enough to think they stayed alternative and punk rock as VICE went SJW while their leader is creating far-right paramilitary groups and has takes like "why not an ethnostate?", "all muslims lie about being tolerant (literally the Onion "decoy muslims" video but actually". and "trans people shouldn't be allowed to talk to children"Why does VICE make these people so god damn upset? It's such a shocking level of absolute MALDING over a split that happened over a decade ago. I can't tell if it's people just finding any reason to hate VICE or people who hate this stuff and never watched VICE coming to brigade it. But I mean look at the comments here lmaooohttps://www.youtube.com/post/UgwMZ-dzCJ9bpV9fGxd4AaABCQhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbdNh6p8RKoThese one's are at least political and controversial to the very stupid and very evil among us, but look how mad some of these people are at SNAILS:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-UeVeRFU20 30 posts and 8 images omitted.
