Been a while since I’ve made a show thread but everyone’s favorite con artist lawyer Jimmy McGill Saul Goodman is back as Better Call Saul returns for its 5th and penultimate season.

I think I watched 2 seasons and i didn't mind it. I just think i was hoping for a payoff that never came. Maybe I'll watch the rest later on but right now I've got no motivation for a slog.

It was always obvious that it was going to be a different show. IIRC, that's what they said. What wasn't obvious was that it was going to have increasing amounts of filler so they can milk it for everything it's worth. There's four seasons worth of story here, tops.

I really liked the season finale and you're right that there is some sympathy for Lalo being betrayed by Nacho considering how much trust Lalo placed in him and having to fend off all of those sicarios by himself, which was pretty badass. Then again, Nacho has been put in a very difficult position of being in the middle of the war between the Salamancas and Gus having to work for the latter or else his father is gonna be killed.

I also found it interesting that we saw a role reversal with Kim and Jimmy in this finale compared to last season's finale when Jimmy became Saul and now Kim coming up with the idea of sabotaging Howard and getting their 20% of the settlement money from the Sandpiper case including the whole guns shooting and holstered gesture. I'm really interested to see what ends up happening with Howard and how that affects Kim and Jimmy's relationship.

>>414668
Exactly. Better Call Saul isn't just another Breaking Bad and it's better that way than having to replicate the same formula of Breaking Bad. I enjoy the legal drama/non-Breaking Bad type aspects of the show that helps set it apart.

Can you recommend any good horror-movies with a happy ending?

Something like the Exorcist but without the priest dying? Or imagine Hereditary without the main protagonist dying horribly?

Something where the bad guys / entities lose @ the end?

It's uncommonly more fleshed out for a horror movie, though the ending is up for debate on whether it's happy or not (though I didn't find it TOO sad).

This was a fantastic, trippy movie with some heavy emotional and psychological themes, and an extremely good modernization of Lovecraftian cosmic horror, but I'm not sure if your weirdass analogy is the best way of conveying that.

I'd say the ending is more bittersweet than outright happy or sad. Sort of on the level of a more emotionally draining The VVitch.

I just finished Beverly Hills Cop 1 - 3.

While I think the first one is still the best of the three with a noticeable decline with 2 and 3,
I still really enjoyed the bad jokes, the swearing and violence.

Can you recommend anything similar?

Any 90s Action-Comedy worth watching?

There's a difference between expending effort to maintain things and deliberately modifying them for continued profit at minimal effort. A reimagining or remake or new telling of a story adapted for modern times isn't the same as editing/censoring a previous work to fit a modern audience and basically gaslight people about how things were in the past. And in 100 years, plenty of people would get that reference, and for those who didn't it'd probably annotated. Editing works like that is a slap in the face to historians as well as whatever the future GreekTragedyLover equivalents in the future will be. What irks me the most is that it's done for the worst reasons though, particularly in Disney's case.

Shit forgot to add: I disagree that art is a means of communication first and foremost. Art is for it's own sake, for the pleasure of the exercise, for the pleasure of the interpretation and for the pleasure of the aesthetics. Art is too broad, too vast and simply to ineffable and debatable a term to be reduced to [simply a means of communication. nb.

>A reimagining or remake or new telling of a story adapted for modern times isn't the same as editing/censoring a previous work to fit a modern audience

How so? How is every edition not a work in and of itself? I think things can be revised or changed for many different, valid reasons. As an observer of a piece, I don't feel the necessity to know everything about its provenance or how the work has changed over time. To simply appreciate it specifically for what it is at that specific viewing is all I can really do. There is nothing outside the text.

I think any change that would be made in the name of "political correctness" is such an insignificant thing in the scheme of history it will never, ever matter. Well actually, if anything now that I think about it, what would be more important to future historians is records of exactly what we're doing in supposedly "censoring" things, historians of the future I think WILL be very keen on knowing why we made the changes we did, because it shows what we value in this time we're living. There will still be older editions to compare to, they don't just disappear

>basically gaslight people about how things were in the past

we already do that all the time though, because the past is almost as great a mystery to us as the future is, we don't and can't ever truly know what it was like. Any and all interpretations of what it might have been like in any past time are necessarily influenced by the observer. that isn't to say it's all bullshit or it's all pointless to think about, just that all of recorded history should be taken with a grain of salt, as narratives and stories, not full-color photographs

>And in 100 years, plenty of people would get that reference, and for those who didn't it'd probably annotated

What makes you say this? What are some legendary silent films? Great 18th century Neapolitan operas? Would you recognize a quote from one? And more importantly, how can a simple annotation possibly give someone the cultural context that living decades in this time and place gives us? It's like trying to explain why a joke is funny to someone who didn't get it.

I just realized how abstract and pretentious this discussion of children's shows is getting, maybe we could bring it back and say I still just don't understand why it's that big of a deal when diddlers and wife beaters get cut out of media targeted at impressionable people.

>Editing works like that is a slap in the face to historians as well as whatever the future GreekTragedyLover equivalents in the future will be

They'll get it just as "wrong" no matter what, because history is still of its time like any other human endeavor, and they'll belong to a different one. Their interpretations of our history will serve their own purposes, just like our interpretations of the past serve our own purposes in the present.

>What irks me the most is that it's done for the worst reasons though

That seems like an entirely different deep dive so I'll leave it alone

>>414926
yep agree, describing it as a means to any one end is narrow minded, I should have worded that better

I mean the series does focus on Joe's narrative and paints Carole in a hypocritical light. There was an article on Elle that talked about that:

>For example, the show touches on the fact that tigers can't be released into the wild after being domesticated during cub-hood. Although, it doesn't explain that tigers bred in captivity are not the antidote to the endangerment of the species, as they are technically known as 'generic tigers' that are typically mixed sub-species that are not found naturally in their countries of origin, where they could no longer survive as a result.

>Unfortunately, because this fact was not explained in the show, the series made Carole appear hypocritical for keeping the cats she rescued in captivity. However, in reality, there is no other option left for these animals. They cannot be released into the wild because they will not survive, so unless they are saved and live out their days in a sanctuary, they are still at risk of unethical breeding or even being killed in private zoo circles.

>On a related note, there are allegations that the show deliberately portrayed Big Cat Rescue in a negative light, which was the only place in the series dedicated to rescuing animals and not breeding them—and is reportedly affiliated with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, a non-profit organisation that provides certification for animal sanctuaries, rescue centres, and rehabilitation centres through verification and accreditation. In fact, the one person who preached about the plight of the animals in the show was Carole.

Not that I disagree with how Tiger King portrayed her though they could have had more fair and balanced perspectives.

>>414830
Yeah she doesn't, they're volunteers. The series didn't mention that Big Cat Rescue forbids volunteers or staff from touching the animals or else they're fired for doing so.

Since the show was about the people not the animals there wasn't any focus on any real conservation efforts. They could have interviewed independent experts but that would have made a different show.
But I think the over-arching narrative that tigers are in any way special in comparison to other animals we keep for instance as livestock is very hypocritical.

  • They both have companions were are all guys.
  • They both use weapons that were passed down to them.
(Rey had the Skywalker lightsaber. Korra had Aang's staff.)
  • They both use staffs.
  • They both had an issue with anger/rage.
  • They both have a relation to an evil man trying to usher in an era of darkness.
  • They both were called Mary Sues and both of them were hated.
  • They both have powerful connections.
(Rey has the power of every Jedi. Korra had the power of every Avatar.)
  • They were both tasked with restoring balance.

Michael Moore presents Planet of the Humans, a documentary that dares to say what no one else will this Earth Day — that we are losing the battle to stop climate change on planet earth because we are following leaders who have taken us down the wrong road — selling out the green movement to wealthy interests and corporate America. This film is the wake-up call to the reality we are afraid to face: that in the midst of a human-caused extinction event, the environmental movement’s answer is to push for techno-fixes and band-aids. It's too little, too late.

Removed from the debate is the only thing that MIGHT save us: getting a grip on our out-of-control human presence and consumption. Why is this not THE issue? Because that would be bad for profits, bad for business. Have we environmentalists fallen for illusions, “green” illusions, that are anything but green, because we’re scared that this is the end—and we’ve pinned all our hopes on biomass, wind turbines, and electric cars?

No amount of batteries are going to save us, warns director Jeff Gibbs (lifelong environmentalist and co-producer of “Fahrenheit 9/11” and “Bowling for Columbine"). This urgent, must-see movie, a full-frontal assault on our sacred cows, is guaranteed to generate anger, debate, and, hopefully, a willingness to see our survival in a new way—before it’s too late.
