Thoughts? I think it was okay, overall a difficult and challenging watch.

Willem Dafoe's acting was superb and outclasses Pattisons completely and it kinda ruined the dynamic between the characters for me. Pattison did an okay job but was not completely believable in many of the more poignant scenes.

Some real nice dialogue in this film too, heavily influenced by classic literature and it's quite refreshing.
also it's super gay.

That sounds interesting. I know that he WAS tapped to direct that Nosferatu remake. However as I said, its obviously suffered delays - to the point where he went ahead and made a whole entire film while the suits and the bean-counters sort this shit out. I was seriously hoping against hope that things were gonna sort themselves out, but if what you're telling us about his next project being a Viking drama is indeed true, then that pretty much confirms the worst. Development Hell for Nosferatu. Likely never to be made (as theyve been in perpetual pre-production ever since announcing Eggers as the director, so if things still havent gotten off the ground at THIS point, I doubt they ever will and we can consider that project dead as a doornail.

Such a shame. Hes absolutely PERFECT to helm a project like that. Then, he also sounds perfect to helm a project like you've just described as well. Especially working with the producer of HEREDITARY! I'm sure it'll be fantastic anyway. Like I said, Eggers imo is the brightest, most promising new director out there rn and I can't WAIT to see what he does next. Cuz I legitimately believe he has what it takes to become one of the all time greatest filmmakers. A one or a kind auteur.

Excellent film. People were going expecting lovecraftian and were slightly disappointed that there wasn't any antediluvian evil springing forth on the screen kind of misses the point of what lovecraft was about, *puts on glasses*, which was the human descent into madness and the fear of the unknown. It's very clear that Eggers was going for this angle in a more subtle approach.

But yeah, tantalizing screenplay and I really loved the ending.

it's good folks

i don't get really what people are complaining about with the visual style, i think it adds a surreal quality that makes the mixed-media production look much better and the at times stiff acting less jarring

I don't think it was never supposed to be a high art masterpiece, just a cute movie based on a cute musical, which i think it hands down is

would put a lot of money on it becoming cult

why are people so cynical these days?

just dropping in to say i really really really liked the ending, it pretending to veer into both directions i feared would ruin it (the machine actually doing crazy scifi shit, or everything being just a delusion but ultimately ending on a satisfying note.

just ending dom's whole fucking arc with her accidentally going to budapest alone but finally getting some real shuteye is pretty fucking lol, now that i think about it.

I liked it. It wasn't a perfect masterpiece or anything but it did its job as an ending.

An open-ended ending isn't a plothole. You don't have to show every singular action in a story for it to work. e.g. you don't follow characters every time they have to go to the bathroom or get gas. Irving telling Dom that the Dark Army didn't care about her or Darlene anymore isn't a plothole either. They lost their cash and White Rose had already made her mind up about what she was going to do.

For those of you who still care about Star Wars. The latest movie poster was recently leaked for Episode IX which is due for release in the latter half of this year. Along with it an image depicting some of the new attires for the main heroes.

It makes me wonder, though, when the trailer is going to be released and if we're going to get a sub-title soon.

Dude. The best way to watch shows that meander off into the sunset of dissatisfaction is to just trail off.

This is the only correct way to watch Lost, and probably also Game of Thrones.
Future generations can bail on GoT in the later seasons knowing that no, it doesn't pay off shit and only cheapens the rest of what it had going on.

Future generations will also have that fucking book we've been denied for 15 years.

interesting article I just found here on Forbes kind of pertaining to earlier discussion above;? source: https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2020/01/12/box-office-star-wars-rise-of-skywalker-is-the-first-1-billion-disappointment/
> Kathleen Kennedy’s leadership at Lucasfilm has yielded 5 movies that will gross just under $6 billion in global grosses.
>Inflation aside, that’s more than all six Peter Jackson Middle Earth flicks.
> That’s 35% of MCU’s $17 billion 22-movie cume.
> or 76% of the $7.723 billion earned by the eight Harry Potter movies.
“And those five moves include one super-sized smash (Force Awakens) and one huge miss (Solo), with all but Rise of Skywalker earning decent reviews and solid audience word-of-mouth.

Even with all the behind-the-scenes struggles,
I’d argue Rise of Skywalker is the only one that seems a victim of studio tug-of-wars.”

So, about JJ [Abrams] and KK, and RJ.
What the fuck really even was this take-turns directing for this trilogy?
is that not the most soft modern thing imaginable for hollywood to do lol

Fuck off, I actually worked as a janitor for a couple years when my life was at an all-time low, so I was talking from experience. Only instead of working it forever, I got a better job, one that would pay rent and keep me affording more weed than I can ever run out of. Anyone who willingly works as a janitor for life is fucked in the head. It's supposed to be a job to give the mentally handicapped something to get them out of the house, not for normal people to rely on.

A very brief review (or maybe afterthought) of "The Painted Bird"

I've just recently returned from this year's Camerimage in Poland, which is an international film festival with a particular interest in the art of Cinematography. I wanted to share some thoughts on a particular film screening I saw during the festival, "The Painted Bird," by Václav Marhoul. The film is a black and white adaptation of Jerzy Kosiński's novel by the same name. I'm sharing this brief review, or probably better described as a "personal afterthought" without the use of any particular spoilers.

    • *

The Painted Bird was unique in it's use of stunningly beautiful imagery, speckled with hints or suggestions of various symbolic notions. Yet this particular visual and symbolic beauty was presented in a nearly constant contrast with the absolutely disturbing and truly horrifying events of the plot.

Leaving the screening room after the film, I was emotionally and psychologically jarred. The night after having watched the film I woke from terrible nightmares. These nightmare scenes and images were so absurdly repulsive that I am unwilling to describe them to my wife, my closest partner.

On the screen it is only a story, it is only fiction. But in the hearts of some viewers it may shed light upon a certain philosophical or metaphysical musing wherein the most terrible horrors, sufferings, and other pains a person could experience in this human life is perhaps a sort of cosmic phantasmagoria - mere illusion when compared with something yet more mysterious and subtle than our own current human condition.

I always thought it was silly that anyone believed otherwise. A quick read of the book makes it obvious the plot was, at its most generous, embellished.

I´ll explain by example;
If you liked the Tyrone and Spider politics parts in the earlier GoT seasons, you would likely love Wolf Hall. No fantasy and more laid back, but tasty and subdued intrigue.

Holy fuck, this fucking show. It's absolute madness and I can't get enough if it. That season 4 ending, man, the last time I cried so much for a fictional character was when Hodor died. Q got on the underworld metro to go to the great beyond so I guess he's not coming back. But he's kind of the main character. What the fuck will happen to Fillory without Q to believe in it?
