So the boards are back up again after being down for almost a week. What the fuck have you been watching bruh??

>True Detective s3
Way better than season 2 but not as good as season 1. That's not to say this season hasn't been great, it's just been more of a slow burn. The finale airs this Sunday and I'm really looking forward to it.

>Doom Patrol
Only one episode out so far but it's pretty promising for a pilot. Having the antagonist being the narrator is fun and the show is meta without being Deadpool-on-head levels of Random XD. Some people are saying that it's already better than Titans after a single episode... I don't know about all that, but it definitely gives me hope for Swamp Thing coming out later this year.

>Umbrella Academy
Gave it a shot and I got bored 3 episodes in. I'm all for more comic shows that aren't from the Big 2, but not if they're like this. Not trying to hate on the show, maybe it just isn't for me, but it feels like that Wes Anderson X-Men parody already did it better. (Source btw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UngE0qn3VRY )

Haha, the boards were down for almost a week and I didn't even notice. Me 4 or 5 years ago wouldn't know what to do with myself. And I haven't even changed much, all the boards just suck now except /mtv/ and a couple others. What a shame.

Anyways, I've been watching a lot of Mad Men, Season 3. The show has kinda plateaued and gotten to a point where I'm not enthralled or eagerly looking forward to the next episode, but I always know I'll enjoy it. It's a reliable show. That doesn't seem like high praise the way I worded it, but in this day and age, it is.

I watched Team Foxcatcher which is a Netflix Documentary. Really Insane shit. Recommend if you wanna take a swan dive into the mind of a psychotic, schizophrenic, coke addled, 50 year old millionaire man child sports hero wannabe.

Mad Men is great. I know what you mean though. It isn't a show that has cliffhangers or big reveals... it's more akin to the morning after getting blackout drunk and having to deal with the emotional/moral fallout of the night before.

John Hamm's mannerisms in that character have started to tickle me though lol. He has these 3 or 4 go to facial expressions for charming people. There's the confused John Hamm, the intrigued John Hamm, the mischievous and quizzical John Hamm (pic related), and the carefree look right through you John Hamm. After a while you get to notice them being reused and you start to chuckle at them when you notice them being recycled but you recognize that god damn John Hamm is such a fucking charming motherfucker. How could any other actor pull off Don Draper?

I found that show totally uninteresting. Could have just been that for whatever reason I find Emma Stone and Jonah Hill on the screen together to be totally repulsive. It's probably just me but they have no chemistry and it feels like they just have some kind of friendship and are really forcing it.

I saw Jellyfish recently.
Sort of Submarine meets 8th Grade meets 8 Mile with more child abuse.
I thought the cast did a good job and in general it was a good film but have a couple of nitpicks:
The narrative arc seemed to want to lead to a moment of apotheosis but then left everything unresolved in a way that felt more like they just couldn't think of an ending than trying to make a point about real life being unresolvable.
The drama teacher's behaviour and general energy was quite strange; I didn't buy him as being a real person in a real teaching role. I think I know what they were going for but it wasn't right.

At the Q&A after Cyril Nri started telling an immensely dull story about how he got involved in the script but after that was interrupted he loosened up and seems immensely likeable as a pretentious goofball.
Liv Hill did well for such a young actress.
Sinead Matthews' performance was fantastic but she'll always be Jenny to me.
The only thing I really got from the Q&A is that the title is meaningless. There's a retroactive "Oh she's like a jellyfish because she's fragile but also has defence mechanisms" tacked on but no.

>>405202
Honestly, as far as UA goes its really not that bad and definitely watchable considering the current state of TV series. It also gets better as it goes.

However if you have something better to watch or haven't seen some of the old greats then skip it for now and maybe comeback later.

If you are looking for something newish and superhero-y I'd recommend Powers. It only ran 2 seasons but it was pretty good. I am biased though because I've been reading the comics since they came out.

I loved Powers the comic, the show on the other hand... well... I watched the whole thing and barely remember it. I remember at the time thinking that the CGI looked pretty weak. Also Sharlto Copely is a great actor but he felt miscast as hell. The rest of the cast was great, especially Eddie Izzard! It feels like Sony jumped the gun with creating an original series for PSN.

Doom Patrol is fabulous and perfectly nails every character so far (except Jane I guess but it would be pretty much impossible to do her well unless it was actually multiple actresses).

Hell yeah! Going heavy on the Grant Morrison certainly helps. Between this and Happy!, I'm so glad that his works are getting to exist in other mediums. Not sure how to feel about Happy! getting a second season since the source material is only 4 issues in total, but we'll see what happens.

According to the showrunner, we'll see Danny the Street and Dorothy Spinner along with Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man and The Beard Hunter. https://www.syfy.com/syfywire/doom-patrol-showrunner-jeremy-carver-on-turning-the-comic-into-an-r-rated-series-for-dc From what some rumors say, Flex Mentallo will definitely appear (maybe not in this season aside from a tease or two though). Aside from all that I'm loving the easter eggs like Superboy and Krypto being mentioned in Doom Patrol and a random throwaway crime blotter post about Fire.

It seems as if DC has left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths because of their attempts at the DCEU. As a DC fan, it's been a rough few years. I only signed up for DCUniverse so my little brother would have a chance to watch the new season of Young Justice but I've been blown away by how good all the original programming has been so far. Titans hit a few speed bumps but it's probably the best superhero show outside of Daredevil... until Doom Patrol came along at least. Season 3 of Young Justice has actually shocked me with the level of violence... that's the benefit of creating your own platform I guess. DCU has also given me the opportunity to share tons of classic comics with my lil bro.

Everyone outside of the US is kinda lucky that DCU shows drop on Netflix all at once. The only downside of these DCU shows is that they're weekly. That has encouraged discussion in multiple places however.

Lifelong DC fan, I think they get a bit of an unjustified bad wrap compared to Marvel. I haven't gotten around to seeing any of the DCEU movies yet and I hear they are bad to so-so but IMO in the live action department Marvel is mostly so-so to decent. On the live action and animated TV front DC is better and DC has been killing it with animated films for a long time, not to mention their comics.

DC Animated is the shit! While they appear on Netflix infrequently there are always torrentable.

They're far from perfect though. The Killing Joke had too much filler, which wouldn't be bad if it wasn't character breaking filler.

DC's live-action TV stuff has ranged from great to terrible, but quality always varies in a long-run series. NBC's Constantine was amazing the whole way through. Shame they cancelled it, but glad they brought Constantine in the Arrowverse.

Finished marathoning True Detective S3 and it was fantastic. Well written, well shot, well cast and well acted. The only things that stood out to me as not being great was a few green screen driving scenes that were not done very well, and Carmen Ejogo's English accent suddenly popping up in the last episode. Mahershala Ali was fuckin' great throughout and makes for a very convincing old man.

Man, I loved episode 1-7 but the finale was shit. You could watch S3E1 and S3E8 and skip the rest. They make you think its something else the entire time and it turns out to be garbage in the end. The way they talked about Louisiana and how the case got jammed up as well as in the Ozarks(S3) other locations, and specifically mentioned similar things happened all over pointing out Arkansas specifically leading me to think that would be the next season connecting S1 and a future season that Nick said would connect S1 to other seasons but no we get a bullshit junkie who paid to give her kid away who then lived a happy live for decades.

Ruined the whole season for me. They played too hard into S1 in S3 and then went a completely different way with it.

I felt just like you did when I first saw the finale. Looking back though I really came to enjoy it. Unlike the first two seasons this season didn't have any supernatural element or hint at it, and I think it helped. It played the audience right into it's hand. It was also a surprise that there was a relatively happy ending for a victim with a sad one for our senile main character. The final shot was perfect Purple Haze was always a soldier tracking through enemy territory in the jungle. He never changed... only the setting did.

You weren't totally wrong, the bit where Amy acted all broken up because some dude once hit on her who she wasn't into and that's a thing I'm supposed to feel very bad about, that was dumb. I'm not complaining about social justice themes, the way that was framed and presented could actually be detrimental to people who've had real problems because it makes them look like idiots.

Watched the season premiere of Better Things. Glad this show is back. It is basically female version of Louie, which makes sense goven that Louis CK and Pamela Adlon used to collaborate together and they co-created Better Things, but I think it’s an underrated comedy. I did like the scene when Sam was at the bar and had to get her ID checked along with the other senior citizens at the airport bar.

Also what did y’all think of latest B99? Main plot with Jake, Amy and Rosa was at least relevant in today’s context but I don’t know if it hit its mark. I did enjoy the subplot with Holt, Terry and Charles however and that standoff at the end between Holt and the Disco Strangler.

You, along with everyone else that enjoyed Garth Marenghi's Darkplace should check out Matthew Holness' (aka Garth) horror movie, Possum. It's nothing like Darkplace as it's a straight up horror movie, but you might notice some similarities. It's really creepy and unsettling. Hell of a film debut.

new Brooklyn Nine Nine was finally funny again after a bunch of bad weeks in a row. I checked wiki, and apparently the writer also did this year's season premiere, so kudos to him for having the only two good episodes this season.

Speaking of shows with bad seasons this year, American Dad has been especially horrible lately. I know it always has had dips in quality, but what the hell?

TBS American Dad has been crap for the most part. We all see the potential but it isn't living up to the hype in the slightest. MacFarlane washed his hands of it with the network transfer.

This may not be a popular opinion but at least The Cleveland Show had a singular creative vision, making it better than what we've been subjected to in recent years.

Homecoming

It was pretty good. The acting was really good except Julia Roberts. I wish they had gone with someone else. She is terrible. Always has been horribly mediocre. But even still, it was quite good. The supporting actors really picked up the slack.

It was from the same creator as Mr Robot so it had some artistic style and a similar thriller feel that makes for good suspense and buildup. The artistic style at first felt a bit disjointed but it eventually grew on me and worked. Most of the show took place 4 years in the past and during those parts the show was in normal aspect ratio, but when it was in the present it had a 1:1 aspect ratio. It felt very strange at first and I didn't really like it but they made really interesting use of it to get some really interesting shots that looked really neat.

Every other episode is okay but the ones that aren't make for very long feeling short films. They're also super edgy in a weird sort of way; it's like whoever commissioned them was standing over the writers the entire time egging them on to add as much swearing and nudity as they possibly could, just because. It feels forced and doesn't add anything to the narratives.

There's 2 eps out so far and they're both really good, ep 2 in particular. They do good at making you like all the characters, from the minor students to the three teachers and even Patton Oswalt (who I normally talk shit about). I still miss The Mick but oh well.

Are there any other good recent comedy shows I should be following? Bonus points if the season is actively airing so I have something else to watch weekly once I'm caught up. Just assume I've seen all the classic shows already. My current weekly show load is super small and I've given up on TV dramas, they went downhill fast with Netflix taking over TV, and books fill the void that The Wire and Mad Men left. Right now I only watch AP Bio, American Dad, and Brooklyn 9-9 for week to week shows.

Haven't seen the show but I had tons of people shouting at me to watch the first season. I'm a serious fan of Brit Marling though. The Sound of My Voice and The East are masterpieces (Another Earth was cute).

She's not a short-form storyteller at all. She reminds me of William Gibson's cyberpunk storytelling where the bits he leaves out are just as important as what he puts on the page. It's a kind of narrative jazz in that way. Now that season 2 of The OA is out, it might be the perfect time to check it out.

Watched the first episode of season 3 of Santa Clarita Diet, which came out today. I'm liking the story-building they're doing with why Sheila is undead and its connection to a virus in Serbia and the Knights of Serbia order killing the undead. What I enjoy most about the show is its tone in how non-chalant and humorous the comedy is with Joel and Sheila killing people at least they're neo-Nazis they're killing so it's okay so she can feed, which reminds me of the tone of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. Also got caught up on the past three episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

I did also watch The Inventor and god damn Elizabeth Holmes is a Rule 63 Steve Jobs and so weird and delusional about what Theranos is trying to do and putting millions of peoples lives in danger that it makes Billy McFarland and Fyre Festival look like a saint compared to her.

I'm watching Resurrection Ertrugrul. This is certainly an interesting show. It's the first Turkish language show I've watched. It's kind of similar to American historical fictions like Vikings or The Last Kingdom except it's got a lot more emphasis on the drama and less on epic gory fight scenes. The fights are actually kind of cheesy because they just do this little fake blood splash and slow-mo, but I didn't mind, it's fun. The whole production is a little rough around the edges, but the setting is really interesting and the drama is great. I was kind of disappointed to find there were only 3 seasons, but now I'm on season 1 episode 33 and I realize it's not so bad. It's kind of like a soap opera really, but set in the past in an interesting time and place and with espionage in the palace and nomad tribes rather than cheating housewives providing the fuel for the drama. It's especially interesting to see the whole crusades thing portrayed from the Muslim point of view where they're the heroes and the Crusaders are evil. I can't say I've ever seen anything western on the crusades but I doubt it would have the same view. Also, let me just say how refreshing it is to see a romance without tons of graphic sex immediately after the two lay eyes on each other. Like damn, I didn't realize how tired I was of seeing that until I watched this show. it's nice to class it up a little and have some longing desire and shit build up.

Watched Maniac Cop 1 & 2. Haven't seen either since I was a little kid. The original is actually pretty decent for a low budget 80's horror. The second flat out sucks though. The idea of two serial killers meeting and partnering was completely wasted. The first movie was like an allstar B movie cast too. It has Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell, Robert Z'Dar, Leo Rossi, Richard Roundtree, William Smith and Sam Raimi. The bluray for part 1 was weird too, every time there was a scene with the mayor the quality dropped to what was very obviously an old vhs capture, that even has tracking issues in a couple of scenes.

Here's an example of how jarring the quality difference is with the mayor scenes and the rest of the movie.

Love death and Robots was solid. The short length meant that you never paused mid episode or got bored and also left you wanting more when you hit the really good episodes, which made up about half of them. The graphics were pretty great and the nudity was over the top. But God damn that alien.

Watched the first episode of The Last Drive-In. C.H.U.D. is a pretty dumb movie so I enjoyed Joe Bob's constant criticism of it during the breaks. Castle Freak is a total creepy sex pervert movie, though, and even with Joe Bob's comedic bits during the breaks I didn't really like that one all that much. Looking forward to see what next weekend's episode has in store. Hopefully someone is saving these episodes, too, since I imagine the digital rights to these movies he's showing are volatile and the entire season won't always be viewable. Hell, some episodes might get removed from Shudder before the season ends since this is running through the summer.

Fudge! Sorry, didn't mean to reply to The Doctor, I'm a high idiot nb.

Actually, I revoke my nb, invoke a bump, and request a pardon for double post.

I have been watching season 3 of True Detective and while this show is a fucking headache to keep up with at times, it's pretty fucking great. I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing that you have to think so much to align things, it's just the whole thing is a bit of a clusterfuck. To have the case being investigated in 3 different time periods and spectating all 3 at once is a bit of a mindfuck, but it's executed so well that I can still keep up with ease, and the little breadcrumbs that are dropped, leaving hints that travel through time, are really fucking rewarding to notice. I think season 3 is a return to form, as all the cliche critics are saying. Idk if anything could ever top season 1, but damn this cast and this writing is fucking great.

Episode 2 was a lot better than the pilot was. Hopefully the show levels out and stays consistently funny, because this one seemed an indicator of good things to come.

Finished my binge finally. The first 6 episodes were amazing, the final 4 were horrible.

Binged Veep this past week and am all caught up now but I think as far as this decade is concerned, it's probably at the top of the best comedies list. Jonah's antics and Selina in general being kind of an asshole and not taking shit from anyone like she's the antithesis of Leslie Knope has been pretty entertaining to watch.

Last week's season premiere started strong coming off that two year hiatus and definitely my favorite part was when Jonah said that his wife was his former stepsister and that sit down interview made it even funnier.

Not quite sure how to feel about this show. It isn't very funny but it does hit very close to home. It's a coming-of-age story about two best friends entering middle school. Maya & Anna start the 7th grade in the year 2000... but they're played by their adult versions. Everyone else is a teen or pre-teen. From what I've watched it's pretty spot on as a cringe-origin story if anything. The laughs are few and far between but when they land they're atomic bombs.

Comcast is doing some thing where they're giving access to some content for free this week. I'm pretty sure they're just doing it to see who has a job or not because they literally had a survey asking if I had a job lol. They'll know from how much people watch even if they don't answer the survey. Anyway, I used it to watch the last two seasons of Banshee. I forgot how great this show is. What a fantastic setting with great factions and characters.

>Veep s07e02 - Discovery Weekend

Good episode especially for the Jonah subplot and their parody of #MeToo with #NotMe and women denying that they ever dated Jonah. The dude is such a cringey pompous sleazebag but I can't help but laugh at the shit he gets himself into as he digs himself deeper and deeper and yet gets more popular. Wasn't as into the main storyline with Selina though bringing back the sexual tension between her and Tom makes it more compelling if they're running against each other. Looking forward to seeing how these final five episodes go.

>Brooklyn Nine-Nine s06e12 - Casecation

The whole will they or won't they have kids storyline is cliche but they handled it in a respectful yet humorous manner especially the debate scene between Jake and Amy.

>This Is Us s03e14-18

I binged the last five episodes of the season and I thought it was kind of disappointing after a good string of episodes with the two parter about Jack's brother and Beth's origin story. While I at least thought the episode about Beth and Randall's marriage was good and Kevin has had a remarkable turnaround this season and becoming one of the show's best characters, the rest of it I can't really give a shit about.

>The Disappearance of Madeline McCann

God what a media circus this was especially given the conflict between the rules of Portuguese judicial and police investigations and the media looking for answers. I thought it examined all of the angles surrounding the case well but I just don't get how you can leave your child in the room sleeping in a foreign country alone like that. She disappeared without a trace and yet nothing had ever been found of her but I got a feeling she'll turn up dead or alive some day.

>The Case Against Adnan Syed

I also binged another true crime documentary series that HBO just aired this past month and HBO's true crime docs are pretty top notch as this one was no exception. I'm glad Serial helped to publicize the case and galvanize the public into investigating deeper hoping to clear his name, which for wrongful conviction cases like this is important to have the media and public on your side much like the Paradise Lost trilogy did for the West Memphis 3. Too bad unlike the 3, the prosecution isn't willing to give Adnan the Alford plea and still taking the word of some dude like Jay that probably lied his ass off to frame Adnan. It's awful what happened to Hae Min Lee and her family shouldn't have to go through losing a child like that but I don't think Adnan killed her especially given that when they finally tested the DNA evidence, there was no match. Not to mention the cell phone records don't match up to the towers and stuff.

>Us

This movie was creepy as fuck but Jordan Peele did it again, the dude's becoming the next great director of horror. I honestly don't know what to make of the ending with Red taking Adelaide's place and Adelaide becoming Red but I thought it was pulled off well. It also wasn't as violent as I thought it would be though more so than Get Out. Also props to them making a classic hip hop song like I Got 5 On remixed into an orchestral horror tune.

>>406352
Amen to that, I really miss that show though I wish season 4 had been better had it not been for the production issues with it. I loved the fight choreography and action and I always found the dynamic between Hood and Kai to be pretty compelling with both being on opposite sides of the law but on the same coin.

I was pretty entertained by this episode especially the scene where Jonah was arguing with those public image fixers about using the words retarded and gay. I was also surprised how they handled Amy getting an abortion. Enjoyed the part where she clapped back at that protestor about getting one and Dan commenting about the vaginal vacuum.

>Room 104 s02e08-12 - A Nightmare, The Return, Artificial, Shark, & Josie & Me

I got around to finish watching the remaining episodes season 2 but overall I thought the season was just as good as the last one and with more big names. I think my favorite episodes from this season were Hungry, Arnold and Shark especially the last two based on Brian Tyree Henry and Mahershala Ali's performances.

>The OA s02e01 - Chapter 1: Angel of Death

Hard to believe it's already been over two years since season 1 but the recap made it easy to remember what happened. I figured that the five movements and OA's sacrifice at the end of last season would help to make the dimension jump into one where she's Nina Azarova and wasn't adopted though is back in the same situation as Prairie Johnson being held prisoner by Hap but now in a mental asylum with Homer as a psychiatrist instead of another patient. I also think so far Karim's investigation into Michelle's disappearance has been compelling with the addition of that ARG Symphony playing a role in her disappearance. The video game aspect is something that's been done before in Black Mirror and other media but I guess I'll see how they put their own spin on it.

I remember making a thread for the first season here and the reviews on here were more on the negative side but I like Brit and Zaj's work like The East for example. Almost caught up on The Walking Dead after reading a bunch of reviews from fans and critics about how good this season is. Turns out it's true. I only have two episodes left, and as a comic fan, I'm hyped for the big Fair in episode 15. I already was spoiled that Henry will be a head on a stick, so it's hilarious the way this season constantly treats him like a new main character in giving him all of Carl's old plotlines.

Watching veep and barry.

Not enjoying veep much at all. The characters have finally become thoroughly unlikable, but not in a funny way. Jonah bits from ep 3 are the funniest because of how over the top, rediculous, and slap stick he is, but it's painfully obvious how the writers have changed. At this point its become how many double entendres they can fit into an episode, and they are obviously trying hard to wrap up the character's relationships to one another as this is the final season, but it's very hard to care about any of them. It is honestly feeling more like the later seasons of arrested development.

Barry is pretty great, but not many jokes in ep 3 imo. Definitely less laughs and more suspense. I really do not care about what's happening with Fonzi's relationship, i get it, but i dont care. I only like Barry, and it's more like I'm agonizing with him rather than laughing at it. It's effective but i feel like hes suposed to have popped by now, and i think i see the pattern of him getting saved by his relationships that care more about him living through another episode. Kinda sillicon valley esq

Just watched the Last Drive-In episode with Deathgasm. It was... alright I guess. It felt like a student film someone made that was a big fan of Shaun of the Dead, Evil Dead 2, and Braindead. The practical FX were alright and some of the non-horror gags made me laugh, but overall the writing and script is a bit of a mess and it kind of looked like it was shot on digital video (hence the student film vibe) so I kind of tuned out from time to time.

No idea if it's been renewed officially, but Brit and Zal have a plan for 5 seasons. My favorite part of season 2 is that we learn Scott learned his movement while on the set of The OA from Phyllis Smith. Despite her role on The Office and all of her other acting gigs, she's only existed in our dimension (the one we all shitpost in) to teach Scott the third movement.

>Leaving Neverland

I always had a feeling that Michael Jackson was a pedophile even after his acquittal and this documentary certainly hammers that home. For Wade and James to come forward and publics with their experiences with Michael takes a hell of a lot of balls for them to do especially for the backlash they have already certainly gotten from fans of Jackson and will defend him no matter what. I think the doc paints a portrait of how the power of celebrity can mask a lot of the fucked up shit they can get away with. Obviously it's a one sided documentary but I don't know how anyone would be able to deny what Jackson did after that.

>Brooklyn Nine-Nine s06e13 - The Bimbo

It was an okay episode though Jake and Holt's comedic chemistry always gives me a laugh.

>>406610
>The characters have finally become thoroughly unlikable, but not in a funny way.

I've always felt like the unlikeability of certain characters such as Selina, Amy and Dan for example made sense within the show's context given their positions in politics and because of that I've found that aspect to be one of the show's funniest parts. I can understand now why Julie Louis-Dreyfus won six Emmys in a row for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

>Jonah bits from ep 3 are the funniest because of how over the top, rediculous, and slap stick he is, but it's painfully obvious how the writers have changed.

I agree that Jonah's storyline and his scenes have consistently been the best part of the show. He's basically Veep's Dwight Schrute. I do think that while I do enjoy watching it and makes me laugh, it does feel a little different since Armando Iannacci stepped down as showrunner after season 4.

>>406708
lol that wouldn't surprise me if that were the case. And they got a plan for five seasons? Well I hope they can do it and not have it get cut short like Sense8 though their budget is probably much cheaper than Sense8's was.

The first episode set the bar really low since it's essentially the first act of the original movie(minus all the comedy)... but each week has proved that the show is it's own thing and fleshed it out quite well.

Guillermo, Nadja, and Colin are great additions to the cast and story. Colin the energy vampire having a fling with an emotion vampire was great!

All a man needs to be invincible is a hammer and a shit life. This film would have been ignored without Phoenix. It's very well paced and edited, and technically perfect. Not one scene is wasted. Speaking of scenes, the one on the kitchen floor is something else. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, but it was genius film making.

The first episode was funny. I watched it last night just because I found out Matt Berry is in it. It really does feel like The Office but with vampires. It's really good. I couldn't get into the movie at all, but the cast of this really carries it.

It's not the best thing ever, but it's really good for a modern comedy. Way above the bar that's been set.

My main issue with episode 1 was that it seemed to be running off a checklist of vampire cliches to make jokes about. Like, they really couldn't make it one whole episode before referencing Twilight? But after episode 1, they do far more unique things with the characters, subverting tropes and coming up with more original problems for modern society to throw at the undead

I snatched Cartoon Hell on a whim. I think people who are really into animation or drawing and that kind of stuff would really like it. As someone who isn't it is still half decent and the dialog isn't bad. Pretty good background show as well.

Basically two animators are stuck in hell and each "week" (it was released all at once) they get an idea from one of the demons for a cartoon and then they have to come up with it while doing commentary, talking about the show and the characters, and some quips here and there and then at the end they plug the picture they draw into a TV show making robot and it creates a show from the pic. If the show is good enough they get out of hell.

Well I think a lot of people forget when they're watching that the pilot has to play it safe in order to get picked up, so I give it some slack when I'm watching the first episode. I think it's pretty understandable for it to go for the low hanging fruit that are very accessible jokes with a guaranteed chuckle.

The new Twilight Zone series is actually really good. Surprisingly good. I caught myself thinking "they should tone down the politics a bit" but The Twilight Zone has kinda always been political. But the new series might be overdoing it just a bit. Just give us a some sci fi that's less political every now and then and I'm satisfied. A break from the more serious stuff.

That being said, the most recent episode is pretty hilarious. It's such an excellent way to make fun of Trump while also making a decent episode.

Such a beautiful bit of closure for Larry in this episode. Some for Cliff as well, but the majority of the emotional gut punches came from Larry's storyline.

The use of the original Moon River early in the episode was only made better by using Frank Ocean's version at the end. Had me crying like a bitch. That "You're telling me you haven't fucked anyone since JFK" line had me rolling though. Looking forward to more Ant Farm shenanigans next episode!

I just marathoned Lodge 49. It's the best show I've seen in years. It has this great contrast between fantastical tv-style scene setups and then has the characters react in these really understated believable ways. The show seems to write characters with basic compassion for each other in a way that's more believable than most shows.

Debt is a great central enemy. The way it just grows and seeps into every corner of the show is great.

Alchemy is such a great setup. I mean, they deal with it and treat it as a magical-realist element. But it's also the central metaphor for the whole show. Ernie and Dud are on a quest to turn their shitty lead lives into gold. They chase after this quack-guru trying to make it happen and then it all slips away from them in the last episodes. Like an alchemist chasing transmutation.

Liz's story too. It's so close to Ernie and Dud's. Except her guru just appears to be a quack. She might be more real, but any time Liz's path seems to be actually real... she runs. She's just the opposite of Dud. Dud is desperate to have something be real, Liz is terrified when something ends up being real.

If she's also a knight in the metaphor, she's the one who runs from the grail because she's scared when it actually appears.

Any one else watch this thing? I haven't heard anything about it before now but it's amazing. Glad it was renewed because it doesn't seem like it's been a hit.

Finally got a day off so I put on The Tick s2 as background noise while doing much needed household chores. It's not groundbreaking or anything but it's lighthearted fun with a good amount of cheesy wordplay and trope teasing. Peter Serafinowicz's American accent isn't as off-putting as it once was. It's by no means bad... just always been weird to hear it coming out of him.

I really liked all the new characters that were introduced. Between Sage the Supernumerary, Tyrannosaurus Rathbone, and Lobstercules this show is really starting to feel like a live-action equivalent of Venture Bros.

Finally got around to watching Breaking Bad, ended up binging the entire series over the past week because it was so goddamn good. I had no idea it would have so much (black) comedy in it to go along with the drama, so that was a pleasant surprise. My favorite character was Walt Jr., I was glad that in the end he didn't get killed off since he was the only truly good character on the show (besides the other kids like baby Holly and Brock, I guess) so it was so incredibly satisfying to see him save his mom's life in Ozymandias. Fuck yeah, Walt Jr.

I guess, but by the end of the series it really felt like Walter was hoping to replace Walt Jr. in a way with Jesse. To Walt, his actual son was handicapped so he had a bit of pity for him while also a desire to make Walt Jr. admire and respect him. With Jesse, he was the son that Heisenberg Walter always wanted (and needed): and impressionable youth that he could mold, and whenever Jesse got out of line he could deceive and manipulate him back into servitude, something he likely would actually feel guilt for if he did to Walt Jr. I think the big moment in Ozymandias when Walt Jr. stood up to Walter in order to save his mom was the perfect capper to the Walt-Walt Jr. arc because even with all of Walt's attempts to preserve his ideal image of what he wanted his family to be, his evil intentions finally got the best of him, and when confronted with what his dad (who was his self-professed hero) actually was, a monster, Walt Jr. didn't give Walter any benefit of the doubt and he stood up to Walter. Jesse kind of ended up doing a similar thing at the very end of the final episode, too, where when Walter asked him to kill him he told Walter no, as he was finally done doing what Walter asked of him and letting Walter manipulate him. God damn, what a great show. I'm guessing Better Call Saul won't live up to it so I'll take a breather and try to watch it as its own thing as much as I can. I love Bob Odenkirk, though, so I doubt I'll hate it regardless.

I remember watching that as an 18 year-old senior and thinking it was some profound film. Looking back on it as an adult, though, it's just a vapid wankfest that tries to romanticize a couple of pussy psychopaths. It's well-disguised trash.

The movie was virtually devoid of any characterization, but I do remember it painting the murders as victims with them having drunk, abusive parents and them being gay. It's well-disguised trash.

Nope, their parents were normal and made them pancakes. No abuse or anything, are you mixing two movies together? The gay thng wasn't romanticizing them, they just went "well we're gonna die today, and i've never kissed anyone." And then kissed.

As for being devoid of characterization, I thought they had some believable characters, and the style of the movie wasn't about setting up your typical characters or narrative. It was more of in the vein of cinema verite, about a day in the life of a high school that happens to get shot up

And I totally see why most people wouldn't like that approach, not having a concrete narrative. but I thought it worked.

the new What We Do In The Shadows kicked ass. Felt like a season finale, but apparently there's 4 more episodes this season. Yay! My one complaint this week is that Kristen Schall seemed mis-cast, I wasn't buying her performance and it kept taking me out of the moment. She'd have been better off playing the virgin nerd girl from earlier in the season or something.

Picked up Deadwood a few days ago. There aren't a whole lot of good shows on and I've got HBO so I figured I'd give one of their older shows a go. I looked up Deadwood on imdb and saw a ridiculously high score so that's why I chose it and I'm hooked for real. Very few shows and movies end up above an 8 on imdb and this show definitely has earned high praise.

The actors are all really good. It's really cool that they got 2 of my favorite science fiction character actors in this show to play very different characters than their usual deal. William Sanderson, the toy maker from Blade Runner plays one of Swearengen's sycophants and does an awesome job. His acting is really consistently super high quality. And Brad Dourif plays Doc Cochran. Dourif had probably the most famous and well remembered line in Lynch's Dune. "...fear is the mind killer..." Before seeing him in this role, I've really only ever seen him play characters that seem to be totally insane yet somehow functioning. His kinda hallmark was that his characters all seemed to be hovering right on the edge. Of what I'm not sure but there's definitely some edge to his character and not in the way most people use the word edgy. It's hard to explain, but he's an amazing actor and this role is a huge contrast to the other roles I've seen him in, as he's probably one of the most sane and grounded people in the entire town.

The rest of the cast is great too, but when I saw both of those guys that I really love, that's when I decided I'd see this show through. And I love Westerns, so I don't know how I managed to go so long without checking out this show. I'm glad I found it now though.

Deadwood and Rome were the true renaissance of HBO originals.

They both failed prematurely financially, but Deadwood got a lot further and didn't start to gloss over so much as the money ran out. Rome was ultimately much more ambitious from the beginning.

I'd love to see them try that again with the Game of Thrones treatment.

That's the thing, though,I had no problem with the slow burn. I loved the sound design and the creeping dread, but then it just goes from 0-to-100 for the final 8 minutes or so, the villains act really dumb, she inexplicably just gets out of her constraints and escapes, and that final scene of her in the hospital after she blew her brains out was just the biggest "fuck you" to the audience's intelligence and it would have been fine if it just cut to the credits after she shot herself.

Man, I wanted to like this but that final act just ruined it.

Been catching up this season of Better Things before this week's season finale and watched episodes 2-9 this past week. Louis CK isn't involved with the show anymore but this season has honestly been really fucking great and credit to Pamela Adlon for that. The one scene where Sam had Duke and Frankie say whatever they wanted to each other made me laugh my ass off with all the insults Duke rattled off to turn a tense scene into a hilarious feel good one. The trailers for Big Little Lies season 2 and Euphoria just dropped. Big Little Lies really surprised me by how good it was from an acting perspective since going into it I thought it was gonna be a Desperate Housewives ripoff but boy was I wrong. Adding a renown actress like Meryl Streep certainly adds to that.

As for Euphoria, even though it's an adaptation of an Israeli show of the same name, it's pretty much just like Skins. Not that it's a bad thing per say since the American adaptation of that sucked and this looks like what it could have been if Skins were on premium cable or a streaming service instead of on MTV.

I suppose you could call it a two-part finale even if they only double up on episodes. The second was a pretty heavy episode for the series with a serious shift in tone. It still had jokes and all but that ending was a downer.

I've always seen the show as background noise or something to watch when nothing else is on, but if they can keep up this level of quality I'd be amazed.

Been binging through the Harry Potter films these past two days. Gonna watch Deathly Hallows Part 2 tonight but the films have been surprisingly really good. The Harry Potter series really did set the stage for multi-film universes that Marvel, DC and others have copied with much success. I like how the series just gets progressively darker and better although Chris Columbus' childlike charm of the first two films was good.
