I'm looking for tips on ungeneric anime, series that have their own feel.
Examples:
  • Mushishi
  • Tatami Galaxy
  • I guess Satomi Kuns stuff, even if it's self-similiar
  • Serial Experiments Lain counts I think
  • Monogatari series has a pretty unique tone
  • . . . have seen more but can't recollect at the moment.
Stuff that just seem to be their own thing, not just another variation. Gotten too much of that feel lately. Characters that are just another smug, or another tsundere, without even an effort to make them differ.

> TL;DR
Please tip me anime that breaks the mold in some way, or totally disregards it

Last episode of Shokugeki got me really pumped up, finally the climax we've been waiting for, and more time spent on cooking and not lame high school shit. I'm a bit worried they'll rush the last episodes though, does anyone know how many episodes are left?

Check out Space Dandy if you haven't allready. Also, watch the English version.
Maybe One Punch man also?

Going to pop in here instead of making a new thread. I like adult themed cartoons but I've only just dipped my toe into anime.

I've seen: Starship Troopers OVA, Ghost in the Shell(mostly SAC), Blade OVA, and a few others I can't think of at the moment.

Tried the Tokyo Ghouls, Evangelions, and Cowboy Bebop but haven't been able to get into them. B the Beginning was okay.

Here is the only thing. It has to be dubbed in English. When I watch this stuff I am not in a state to be trying to read subtitles with one eye open.

I'm really into sci-fi especially spacefaring and also long story arcs as well as cyberpunk. I love things like Babylon 5, Space Above and Beyond, Trek, Stargate, etc.

>has to be dubbed

You're beyond help, but try Akira, Ergo Proxy, Planetes, Guyver (the originals from the 80s), Appleseed, Space Dandy, Serial Experiments Lain, Elfen Leid, Aeon Flux, or Parasyte. Pretty sure you can get most of those dubbed, you degenerate savage.

I actually started with that one some years ago but didn't remember to redown it after a disk format, it fits the bill from what I remember.

Thanks for the recs!

>>399198
I'd wager you'd like Planetes, don't know if the dub is any good though

Its not like I mind watching things with subtitles sometimes but when I'm in the state that I enjoy animation/would enjoy anime I'm not in any state to read subtitles so without a dub I have no idea what is going on. Sorry if that offends you its just hard to read with one eye open nodding out.

I have seen both Akira and Aeon Flux and liked both of those and also Appleseed but I don't think I saw the two other Appleseed movies. I only really watched the first two eps of Cowboy Bebop before I posted so maybe I'll try it again.

I'll check out some of your suggestions. A couple of them look like something I would be interested in.

Also Space Dandy is so far up your alley it should make you breakfast the next morning. The English dub is widely regarded as better than the Japanese dub, it has stoner friendly visuals, AND multiple dimensions, Buddhism, and the Singularity all are major themes. Yet it's presented under the veneer of boobies, alien hunting, and comedy. I've probably watched this series all the way through 10 times since it premiered 4 years ago. Although a couple of those times were cause it's basically like a bad trip cure for me.

I tried both and still found the Japanese better
One day I'll find a dub I enjoy and I thought this might be it, but it wasn't. But then maybe I'm just too fussy, I'm sure that for people who don't have a problem with dubs, then this one will be fantastic

Actually thinking about it, I have watched one or two episodes of Cowboy Bebop dubbed and didn't want to tear my hair out, so maybe there can be hope (I still like the sub more though, but hey it's something)

I just pick the VO that actually sounds like how I imagine the characters should.

The dub of Cowboy Bebop is better than the Japanese one because the dub has voices that actually sound like the grizzled John Wayne/Humphrey Bogart Western Noir characters the show is about.

Conversely, the Evangelion dub kinda sucks because they all sound like 30 somethings putting on whiny kid voices, not like the actual whiny kids the characters are supposed to be.

Sometimes, like with Serial Experiments Lain, they both have the required atmosphere and I go with english so I can pay attention to more than the bottom inch of the screen.

Imagine if all dubs from this moment forward had to be done with the original Japanese voice actors.
If they don't know English, they juat have to parrot the sounds without knowing what they're saying.

Just imagine how that would be.

Too high to read all this crap, but I SERIALS commend watching the latest GRArcada video on spring/summer anime (who the fuck knows what season this is supposed to be).

I don't usually like this guy, but there's a LOT of good stuff going on I can even recommend to buddies who don't watch anime:

Golden Kamuy (11 episodes so far)
Gun Gale online (different writer and all)
Hinamatsuri (awesome comedy)
I liked the original Steins; gate, but I'm not a big fan of this new one though.

Anyway, watch that vid and decide for yourself, it's really a bit of a revival of good anime.

Watched Vampire Hunter D. from 1985 and VHD Bloodlust from 2000 just now. Bloodlust has some really neat animation. Kinda corny, but not that much by anime standards. Self explanatory by the title. D hunts vampires. Only one per movie though.

What's kinda fun is that they use mechanical horses. It's never talked about or anything, it changes nothing in any way except they're just machine horses. In a way it's really nice that they just put it in there and then just say "eh", shrugging their shoulders. But real talk it does look kinda silly.

I really struggle to get the appeal behind SEL. I tried getting into it multiple times since it should be right down my alley, but it just feels shoegaze bland. Yes, the art style is good, it's consistent and got a nice shoegaze soundtrack, but what do people with similar taste to me like about it? What makes it special? The characters and world feel so empty. GITS, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Steins; Gate etc. feel miles better to me. The most direct comparison in terms of genre would be GiTS, which I would place way above SEL.

Also, just finished Megalo Box. From start to finish, just fucking sick. It felt like a long badass movie with a bunch of unexpected things happening. So many REALLY good anime this season, but I think this one deserves the top spot. I don't even like boxing or much of sports but 10 minutes into episode one and I was sold.

I don't like your usual waifubait anime, but I do want to watch anime where I might end up crushing on a character. The thing is, when it comes to fictional characters, I tend to like ones (usually but not always women) who are kind of... bad people, especially amoral, slightly deranged free spirits.

Like my biggest fictional crush is Cheryl Tunt from Archer, for example. The closest any anime I've ever seen has gotten was Lina Inverse.

Any annie moo you can recommend based on that?

Oh, and my favorite anime series ever are Slayers, Samurai Champloo, and Samurai Flamenco.

Watched the first episode of "Overlord" due to someone posting a webm of it on /b/

Ended up binge-watching the whole of Series 1, 2, and the first episode of Series 3. Very much enjoying it. So much so that I've ordered the first volume in light novel and manga format in order to see which one I like reading best.

Watching comedy anime is like looking into an alternate cultural timeline in which Ingmar Bergman moonlighted as a Looney Tunes director.

Incidentally, my favourite comedy anime at the moment is Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.

Tried it. Not sure how I feel about it yet. Needs a few more eps.

So what's everyone watching this season? Here's my list:
>Asobi Asobase: 3 cute girls make reaction faces
>Happy Sugar Life: yanrezu loli mindbreak hentai
>BanG Dream: chibi idols are cute for 3 minutes a week
>Cells at Work: the meme show of the season
>Chio-chan's School Road: girl gamer does dangerous and enthusiastic things
>Sunoharasou no Kanrinin-san: innocent shota raped by buxom blonde
>Grand Blue: t-totally not gay comedy about being in a frat
>Backstreet Girls: 3 kakkoi yakuza get magically transformed into 3 kawaii idols
>Lupin the III Part V: Lupin doesn't try to fuck the teenage girl who wants to fuck him
>Yama no Susume: a poor man's Yuru Camp
I think the one I'm looking forward to most right now is Chio-chan because it feels so fresh. Still not crazy about this season, but I guess 3 hours a week of above average TV is plenty.

Even Haruko seemed more subdued than she was in the first series. I hoped they'd play with more animation styles, speaking of which, what happened to the photocopied Medical Mechanica hand? Most of the animation style changes came during Hidomi's short dream sequences. I hope they're just setting up for season 3/

Huh, usually UnlockOrigin is good at blocking these adblock blockers.
I torrent most things anyway because streaming quality leaves a bit to be desired but I like the site for checking out the first episode of an anime or when it's hard to find a good torrent. I wonder how much their traffic will go down with a stunt like this. But I guess they don't care since they don't get any (((revenue))) from those users. Somebody recommended this to me because I said that I liked Zetsuen no Tempest and apparently both anime are made by the same studio. Now that I'm deeper into Zetsuen no Tempest I wonder how much I should trust that studio, one episode literally didn't include a single frame that wasn't shown before, just a cheap recap, and now it's very weird, it's like they started out with a lot of passion and then got lost and depressed after the bulk of the story was done and reverted to the industry-standard of shitting out episodes.

Just finished the first two episodes and it's actually really good. comfy stuff so far. Sure, you could call it slow, but it's not bad. It still drags you in. Gonna be looking forward to see where this story leads. 13 episodes sounds a bit too small though, especially when I think about the number of episodes the first Dragonball dedicated to Son Goku climbing up that tree.

I realised Zetsuen no Tempest and Darling in the Franxx actually share the same problem: half-way through the series, it suddenly takes a massive dip that it struggles hard to recover from. You only see this shit happening in anime. Amazing start.. and then suddenly everything breaks. In Zetsuen no Tempest it was episode 14 and in Darling in the Franxx it's somewhere near episode 16.

Man, if Zetsuen continued the way it started off it would have honestly been one of the best animes out there.

Made in Abyss... Just wow.

This is the best anime I've watched in at least a year. rated +17 for a reason. Crying throughout the fucking show. former Ghibli animators working on it, fucking soundtracks and ambience, consistency, art style... and the terrors. Just everything so well done. Only 13 episodes, but it sure as hell feels like a nice wrap for one season. Season two to come 2019 along with movies and stuff. Definitely gonna start reading the manga now. I can't overstate how fucking good this show is. 8.9 on MAL for a reason. Man I can't stop thinking about it. I binged the whole thing from start to finish yesterday and I'm thinking of rewatching some episodes already. It really left an impression. Reminds me quite a bit of Watership Down actually.

Yeah, a lot of people are saying it looks a lot like it's intended to be a video game. However, it's fucking good as an anime, so I doubt they can make a video game that's not gonna pale in comparison -- the reverse of Persona's situation.

A 17 year old relative is in town and I wanna introduce him to anime. Any suggestions? So I'm thinking of giving him Paprika and Millenium Actress, as these don't involve any fan service, have actually been aired in cinemas and are anime masterpieces while still being quite relatable to live action stuff. And they are some of my personal favorites. I was thinking of Made in Abyss, but those nude scenes will be off-putting if you aren't used to anime and don't fancy little children, despite how good the show is. He was first introduced to anime via fucking HIGHSCHOOL OF THE DEAD, so of course he's traumatized. It's my responsibility now to ease him back into the righteous path, towards the rising sun and towards the light so that one day he may see again. Please, I beg of you, help me save this lost soul.

The problem with wanting more shows like those is that they were pretty esoterically western for anime, and so there are a lot more shitty knock-offs of them than genuinely interesting sci fi series of similar depth.

Some are pretty popular so you might've seen them, but I'll list them anyway since they're good

>Great Teacher Onizuka
>Full Metal Panic (first and especially the second season are comedy gold; the rest takes place mainly outside the school which is pretty shitty imo)\
>Erased
>Legend of Galactic Heroes (this will definitely fill your week)
>Shinesekai Yori (bad ending, but good series)
>Comartie High (great comedy)
>Daily lives of Highschool boys (great comedy)
>Megalo box

Since you like Jojo and Gintama and One Punch man you might also enjoy Kill la Kill. I didn't enjoy any of these so I only recommend it based on that.

These all look interesting after a quick anidb glance. Thank you!

>Shinesekai Yori

>Daily lives of Highschool boys

Both great but also sadly seen them

>Kill la Kill
I liked it to begin with but turned pretty mediocre in the middle throughout the end.

>Legend of Galactic Heroes
I really want to get into it and I'm definitely going to try again, love the setting, characters and space battles but it was a tad slow. I just need to get into the right frame of mind.

Psycho-Pass
Darker than Black
Terror in Resonance
I think Claymore wasn't bad either
And there was this anime about this girl in a village where suddenly everyone turned.

Boku no Pico

You didn't really say why, though. Is the dialogue too fast paced for subs or something? Even when everyone is praising the dub (such as Cowboy Bebop) I tend to shy away from the dubbed version.

The english cast is great, and there's barely any Japanese culture in the show. The synopsis is that it's a schoolgirl who's protected by a military specialist who attends the school in her class as part of his mission to protect her.

I feel in so many situations
Him saying "Roger" and "Affirmative" and "Understood" without that stiff undertone that usually comes with "Diyoukai" has a better effect. The soundtrack is also some Prince of Bell Air shit.

The whole show, or at least what I appreciate about it, is that it's a silly show without much japanese-ness to it either that could get lost in translation. Idk, I watched a few episodes in English and some in Japanese and definitely found myself enjoying the English more

I liked SEL very much a while. Even rewatched it right after the first go. But I think you have to be in a specific situation or mindset/mood to enjoy it, I've tried to rewatch it later some times but it just doesn't resonate with anything in me anymore. Maybe I'll try again soon though.

I suspect it's actually the emptiness itself that really drew me in. It feels cold and distant. Things are vague and almost don't seem to matter much. In a way it evokes something like isolation and loneliness, and I guess kinda like you like to listen to sad music when you're sad.

It's so seldom you find media that share that specific attitude towards life. Things feel distant and far away.

Some other good delinquent anime is Sakigake!! Otokojuku, kind of a Cromartie precursor. Maybe half Cromartie, half Fist of the North Star. Very nice if you can give a pass to the dated fall-over-at-jokes and hearing the principals introduction another time.

Gonna have to make a recc. for Tonari no Seki-kun. Watched it a while back and forgot about it, rewatching it right now.
I'd actually classify it as maybe... Minimalistic slice of life?
If that already sounds interesting I'd recommend going in blind. I'll spoiler the more indepth explanation but it contains no real spoilers. The animation is a bit crude (pic related) but it's almost fitting and it's worth looking past that.
Spoiler free more indepth:
Almost the whole series is just main character sitting in the back of a classroom, and her table neighbor is constantly up to stuff he shouldn't be. Essentially the antagonist of her concentration. It's such a simple concept but it works so well.

>but those nude scenes will be off-putting if you aren't used to anime and don't fancy little children, despite how good the show is.

why the fuck is it this way with basically every fucking show out of Japan? Everything has pedo vibes. I can't recommend any anime to anyone IRL because I remember, oh right, there's sexual tension between an adult and a young girl in that one, or oh wait, there's a naked/sexualized little girl in that one. I was going to recommend my uncle read Berserk because he's into violent comic books, but then I remembered there's another naked loli in basically every arc. Shit gets super creepy, especially when the only adult woman in the series gets brain damaged so she has the mind of a child literally the second she grows up and gets into an adult relationship with the MC. It's like the author is visibly struggling with his fear of adult romance and living out pedo harem fantasies.

It doesn't help if you know that the later arcs (which look like this) have been so delayed and drawn out partly because the author is really busy playing Idolmaster

Also just had the idea to check info about the manga, and they only adapted 4 out 9 volumes. Gonna check it out after I'm done with the whole rewatch. Always neat to find out long after something you enjoyed that there's more of it you didn't know about.

Why not read the novels then?
Its an entire volume condensed into three episodes. They skipped a lot of stuff. They didnt even explain why Ainz fought them with a melee weapon and completely skipped Cocytus speech. Didnt even mention the part why Elves slaves were spared.
they didnt even introduce Albedo's sisters to the story who by the way, played a vital part in volume 3. It really looks like the anime is going for an original ending.

I recently downloaded all of them and have yet to start.
I got a bit confused as to when it's appropriate to read the side stories, some are only a few pages like Albedo's setting but some are massive and span almost 100 pages.

Should I just plow through the regular 1-13 volumes? Should I skip the 7 WN since the author thought he'd stop writing, or at least save it until I've finished the regular LN?

I'd say start with the regular novel and everything else, and read the WN if you want more. The author dropped the webnovels, and there is a number of characters that dont exist (like Albedo) and other changes (Arche lives).
I didnt feel like the side stories ever spoiled anything. I read them after i was done with the original novels and i didnt feel like i missed out on an important detail that i needed to understand the plot in the original novels. The light novels are pretty well contained, and the side stories are only meant to complement the characters that dont get enough spotlight in the original series. Dont forget to read and listen to the Drama CDs. Their pretty good.
Original novels>Side stories> Drama CDs>Web novel (to get an idea of where it all started if you're still interested by that point)

I was going to drop this but at the end of episode 3 pic related happened and it was the funniest goddamn thing i've seen all week so i'm probably going to keep watching. The show itself is cheesy and obviously trying to make itself creepier than it actually is

this show is so fucking good. Its humor really hits and all the characters are great, plus its cute as all hell. If more shoujo was like this i'd be watching a lot more shoujo

Binged JoJo's Bizarre Adventure over the last weeks. Holy shit what a ride.
Part 4 was probably my least favorite because a lot of episodes felt like filler and the main bad guy didn't do all that much. Still really fun.

I liked part 2 the most because Joseph Joestar was the most memorable. Also the stands are cool and all but they don't compare to fighting with skill and wit, the stands can be a bit too gimmicky at times is what I'm trying to say.

Part 2 is great and one of my favorites but I fucking love the 4th, Diamond is Unbreakable, the characters are just so good and even more over the top. I felt like you about the stands while watching 3 but changed my mind with 4.
If anything I thought Part 3, Stardust Crusaders was dragging on a bit. I love Dio in it but probably the least memorable Jojo.

I'm checking out Asobi Asobase.
I've been postponing it a good while cause people online said it was lacking substance, mostly just loads of interesting animated reactions so people got interested off of screengrabs, but then again my taste is a bit off key anyway.

Really liked the first ep. Almost getting a bit of a Nichjou scratch, not because it's similiar but it strikes the same buttons in me, because it's just that tiny bit different from anything I've ever seen before, along with some non standard animation.

I've kept going with it, at ep. 9 now!
(off subject but relevant, first anime I've watched while having a laptop, so I made it a point to only watch it snuggled up in bed, so damn comfy but also so damn dangerous for your sleeping habits)
Gotten a good share of sjolly african-americans, just kinda wish it had stayed away from butt-lasers, since the genuine feeling and low ratio of animeisms is why I appreciate it so much. Hooks into the Nichijou comparison again, since I disliked the whole professor and Nano partition of it. The main trio felt actually genuine, just exaggerated.
But that's just nitpicking, and I really enjoy it. Just if it had stayed grounded (and maybe been just a tad less generous with the instantly to 10 screamy dramatic/humoristic effect) it had been 10/10.

Aand I finished it. Somehow felt that it sagged a bit the last eps 9 onwards. Can't really place why, just didn't feel it as much. Still worth the full watch though.

Also totally forgot to pay heed to the ChioChan rec, I've seen some eps of that actually. That Mananacchio dance, caught me so off guard I could hardly breathe. Probably gonna finish watching it now that I've done Asobase. Don't even remember which ep I'm at, or why I didn't continue.

I don't see the anime showing anything worse than what was shown in the first episode and I think they already left out a certain scene from manga that was suppose to be in Episode 2. I also have my doubts they'll go as far as showing women being used as meatshields or it'll be heavily toned down.

Other than that, the show is dope and I'll keep watching it but its catching flack from all different sides, people who don't like rape as a story motive, people who love Berserker, people who hate CGI, ect.

I'm checking out some ecchi-ish trash from '05, "He is my Master". Reminds me of reading Love Hina as a kid, kinda similiar tone.
Find it kinda annoying with earlier anime though when they have to include a mascot-ified animal.

Also would really appreciate if anybody had a rec. for an anime (or manga) with good lewd based humour. Watching Prison School maybe a year or two ago really reminded me how much I like lewd humour, that hunger been sleeping in me so long I'd forgotten. Only sucks that I've yet to find something that strikes that zone as good since too. Only other decent I can think of is Shimoneta, but still doesn't compare to Prison School.

Hey, I just got curious, what's the worst anime you've ever seen?

For me I think it's actually .Hack//Sign
It just feels so completely void, while being so weirdly edgy. Every single interaction just left me speechless in awe of how anybody could even think to write such dialog. Put on top of that the the musical score very seldomly actually fit what they're on top off. Two people talking in a cave? Put on some fucking hype intense almost boss battle type music.
Everything clashes. Everything.

I'm pretty dissapointed with yesterdays mob psycho episode, it had been pretty unique, but now it seems they turned it in just another flashy fight bad guys with super powers anime. I really hope they turn it around with something unexpected before the end of the season.

I watched dororo up til episode 8, because the production is pretty decent, but everything else about it seems kind of flat.

I haven't read the manga, but I assume the people in the wrong never admit to being wrong, continue to shit on the MC and co, and get access to the dark hado.

>mfw masterani.me is shutting down
Fucking sucks m8. It had the best looking interface of any streaming site I've seen, kept track of the episodes you watched and a bunch of other shit
I'm gonna have to go back to using KA like a peasant now, BUT it is oddly comforting being on KA again because that's where I watched everything for years, and now I've found a workaround for their anti Adblock shit so it's not horrible
I tried a couple other sites last night but they were all pretty bad. 9anime for example, hated the look of the site and how the video was always on the left of the screen
I hope someday we're blessed with something as good as masterani again, RIP

why not download? Anime is niche enough that it's hard enough to find again unlike hollywood movies & tv.

I download an episode here and there but usually my internet is kind of crap so by the time an episode is finished downloading I could have spent that time just watching it on a stream site
Plus I've gotten so used to sites like KA having comment sections after every episode it almost feels lonely watching downloaded stuff

Finally been continuing the gatari series, watched monogatari years ago and kind of put off having at the rest. It's so special, think maybe I wanted to have more time before being done with it. Some of that delayed gratification.
Really appreciate doing so, was in kind of a slump and getting to laugh at something I've not yet seen helps.

Has a bunch of seasons and no drop in quality IMO. The first half of Zoku Owarimonogatari got subbed not too long ago and it was just as good as the rest

>Dororo (Japanese: どろろ) is a Japanese manga series from the manga creator Osamu Tezuka in the late 1960s.
No red ink was spared in the fight scenes. Character design was made more modern compared to the manga (pictured).

I feel pretty mixed about the new /a/, I wish we could just keep an "asian cartoons general" or something in /mtv/, because every season there's at least one decent show I care about and I don't really want to use a board full of obscene pedo jap shit.

I don't know what to think about that mob psycho finale, it was kind of pretty, but felt really predictable and cliché, especially co;pared to the first half of the season.

Anyway, isn't One Punch Man season 2 coming out soon?

I remember some manga people saying the next arc is supposed to be incredible, but I'm really beginning to worry it will lose it's uniquenes, like mob psycho did in it's second season.
Especially with the new studio and everything. (It's now being made by the people who did shokugeki no soma)
