Eyelashes not obeying PBR conventions. Hard black. Blacker than all other blacks in the scene.

Is this a problem? IDFK but this movie doesn't have an even remotely drawn aesthetic and that's the only way this shit works.

Friendly reminder that the "original" trailer was never how Sonic was intended to look. The "updated" version is what Sonic looked like from the start and that original trailer was a marketing stunt to get everyone's attention and make the consumers feel like their opinions matter (protip: they don't).

This is pretty much exactly like that time Coke introduced "New Coke" to distract everyone while they where changing the formula of original coke to use HFCS instead of cane sugar.

I'm not down with this conspiracy but there are clear hallmarks of the model being much closer to correct before the original trailer version. The brow in particular was already where it is now.

But I'm pretty sure this is just because of some asshole shouting orders from on high making the artists actually doing the work go against their better judgment.
I think it was because they were deluded enough to think it was actually good though. It does open up the door to that conspiracy though. It's entirely possible.

Maybe a bitter, know-it-all/seen-it-all, malcontent audience isn't their target. It's a Sonic movie, how "good" could it have possibly been? As far as I'm concerned he's as insufferable as he's been depicted in games and cartoons.

I think the fact that the studio spent another 35 million on it to fix something that was horrendous to the fans is pretty cool. That never happens. This will make a lot of money from kids, families and man children.

Not particularly excited for what looks like a buddy movie where they travel around and get into stupid scenarios but it's not directed at me. I also don't care about Sonic anyways. I just want this movie to do well so maybe studios will take chances with video game movies again.

>I also don't care about Sonic anyways.
Who exactly is supposed to care about a sonic movie?
People who played 90s sonic games are in their 30s.
Do kids today even like sonic? I don't feel like the 3d sonic games ever drew much attention except when they tried to reboot it with Shadow and whatever the hell Sonic 2006: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENqYJRJztls

>I just want this movie to do well so maybe studios will take chances with video game movies
They fucked up Warcraft, I don't think modern Hollywood is capable of adapting a videogame into a movie.

>again
I can't think of any videogame movies that were actually good, but that hasn't stopped them from announcing a minecraft movie.

Mania is such a cheat.

Think about it. If you had Sonic Mania as a novel game as a child it would have blown your dick off. It's the greatest hits of Sonic, except even better than that and with extra game modes and content.

It's half a decade of excellence boiled down into one game.

Seriously annoyed by the fact they not going to have Robotnik as the animal abuser who puts little cute animals in his machines. Could have been over huge with the animal lover crowd. What they have now is basically the E.T./muh friendship angle only with an adult. Going to watch it regardless of that though.

No, you were right. It's not good. It's acceptable fare for children. It won't bore adults to death thanks to Jim Carrey and a snappy pace, but it's pablum that'll bore most adults to the brink.

For fans of the game series, the first minute or so, last few minutes, and mid-credits sequence will sate their nostalgia and prime them for a sequel that should be more like the Sonic the Hedgehog games and cartoons they remember. Due to the set-up, the tone and grade of the writing and humor, and James Marsden starring, this has more in common with the 2011 movie Hop than with any existing Sonic the Hedgehog material.

There are a lot of reasons why it opened huge (large built-in fanbase, weak competition especially for family movies, goodwill for changing the Sonic design, nostalgia from lapsed/older gamers, et al.) with the quality of the film being way at the bottom of that list. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a parent, babysitting, or a huge fan of Sonic or Jim Carrey.

Hopefully the box office and warm reception will encourage studios and directors to be more willing to listen to fans, however. I can't blame anyone who's going/went to see this in part to reward Paramount and Jeff Fowler for listening to public criticism, fixing what people hated, and being pretty gracious about it despite the headaches it must've caused them.

One of the films writers actually did mention that making it more like the Sonic games is on the agenda for the likely sequel & it was something they wanted to do originally, but had to cut for budgetary reasons. Hell, the company that actually made the Sonic re-design apparently went bankrupt because of how much it cost.

In any event, nice to see another vidya game movie didn't crash & burn

Darn, I was hoping the box office might've meant it was an enjoyable movie. I was hoping it would be like how when I took a few kids to see Teen Titans GO! To The Movies where they liked it coz of the humour, but it had a whole lot of obscure comic references as well that made me enjoy it.

That seems unlikely based off of the original Sonic design and the generic "animated character comes to the real world" plot.

To be fair, it wouldn't surprise me if they wanted to put in more game characters, with the horrifying design mentality that the original one had.

I mean, supposedly Paramount knew going in that Sonic fans would hate the OG design but thought the general public would've liked it.

Sony developed it and then lost it to Paramount as a fully formed production, and I wouldn't put it past Sony to have sent the writers the script from The Smurfs with a note that said, "Like this, but with a fast moving humanoid hedgehog." Paramount knew Sega and the character's creators hated the design because they told them as much, but they didn't give a shit. They were ready to shove the movie out the door until literally the entire internet took the piss out of their creepy monster.
