What did folks think of this new doc?

It's super long (like, six or so episodes at around an hour and a half each). But Curtis is always interesting. I'm having some trouble following the train of thought in the film, but that's normal for Curtis and I'll probably watch it a few more times.

I liked it a lot. It was hard to pay attention with the usual enthusiasm that i do, mostly because i was waiting for things to be about more current events as i was more interested in them. The patience pays of because after all, curtis is often telling us a long ass story which he does so damn well. I recommend it to everyone.

Yeah, haven't finished it yet, but I'm so blown away. Gonna be interesting to see what kind of conclusions can be drawn from it.

But regardless, there are so many interesting pictures, and snippets of history. I found this quote by Maya Plisetskaya incredible.

"I don't know about other people, I'll say it for myself. I don't want to be a slave. I don't want people whom I don't know to decide my fate. I don't want a leash on my neck. I don't want a cage, even if it is a platinum one. I don't want to be rejected or branded. I don't want to hide what I am thinking. I don't want to bow my head, and I won't do it. That's not what I was born for."

Or that interview with Chai Ling, one of the leaders of Tiananmen Square protests before.

"To be honest, from the day I called for a hunger strike, I knew we would not get any results. Certain people, certain causes are bound to fail. I have been very clear about this all along... but I've made an effort to present a staunch image to show that we were striving for victory. But deep down, I knew it was all futile. All along, I've kept it to myself, because, being Chinese, I felt I shouldn't bad-mouth the Chinese. But I can't help thinking sometimes, and I might as well say it. You, the Chinese, you are not worth my struggle. You are not worth my sacrifice."

I thought it was a bit long winded (six parts more than an hour in length each), but I guess at the end of it what I took away was the relationship between conspiracy theories and retreating into a mythologized past on the one hand, and the present crises we find ourselves in today

Also, I was really hoping for a follow up to this Happendrome piece Curtis published on his blog a few years ago. It's about the same subject both Curtis' new film and Hypernormalization converged on, but a lot was left unmentioned in the new doc. The only thing that comes to mind was Curtis talking about BK Skinner

That interview with that young Chinese protestor was crazy.

Then he tied it all up with that part about how the world is what you make it, which filled you with optimism but then you might think that some of the things he talks about is exactly people trying to make the world as they see it.

Yeah I'm on ep. 5 right now & noticed two more cuts in the footage on YT, eerily at points where curtis starts making specific points about how the US fucked up in 07'

Wow. Such a powerful call to arms. I can truly tell you were incensed. I can feel your emotions through the screen. Your verbosity has moved me, my dear man.
